Josef Čapek's Early Literary Work in the Context of Modern Art

Josef Čapek belonged among those Czech artists who dealt with problems of form and function of a modern art work in the beginning of 20th century. Both theoretical reflections on art and his early fiction represent Čapek's specific approach to the debate about modern and avant-garde currents in the times of stylistically inconsistent situation. This thesis analyses the confrontation of aesthetic principles of these art movements. Its focus is to show to what extent was Josef Čapek influenced by the principles of the individual movements and to describe the way in which he acquired and modified them. Bernard Horst - The connections between life and work

This thesis focuses on Bernard Horst, who is introduced, based on the historical background of the period in which he lived as well as literary reviews and the interpretation of his selected novels. The thesis aims to provide a complex overview of findings about this writer and should also - using overviews of the history of the Czech literature and literary dictionaries - partially answer the following question: In what light can the personality of a marginal author address a contemporary reader, through which perspective can this author be seen and, most importantly, how this author can be discussed using the wider literary context?
Dramatic production of Prague german authors in years 1910-1938

SYNOPSIS This thesis is devoted to German-speaking dramatists in Prague in the years between 1910 and 1938. The author of this thesis tries to research and emphasize the themes that were the most frequent in their production. The largest space is devoted to expressionist and by expressionism influenced drama. Another objective of this thesis is to integrate the work of these playwrights in the wider socio-cultural context, taking into account the specific atmosphere of Prague as a multicultural and multiethnic city, influenced by the mutual relationship between the three most widespread national minorities. Rendition of generation problems in three dramatic works (by G. E. Lessing, F. Schiller and W. Hasenclever)

The presented bachelor thesis deals with the literary depiction of generational issues in three dramatic works: Emilia Galotti (1772) by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Kabale und Liebe (1784) by Friedrich Schiller and Der Sohn (1914) by Walter Hasenclever. In the first part, I try to approach the literary epochs in which the selected authors worked - the Enlightenment, the Storm and Defiance movement, expressionism, their lives and literary works. Furthermore, I analytically deal with selected works from the point of view of inspiration, connection with the thinking of the appropriate time and the characteristics of individual characters. In the last chapter, I focus on the elements of generational conflict, especially between which characters it occurs. The aim of the work is to interpret the generational conflict in individual works, to compare the ways in which such a conflict occurs in the contemporary social context, in which the authors of different literary epochs resemble or differ and what led them to choose this topic for their dramas. The Esthetics of the Scream in Albert Camus Opus

The main topic of this diploma thesis resides in the comparison of the expressionist painting and the existential literature in connection with the motif of screaming. Despite the temporal and geographical distance of the two artistic movements (we are focused more profoundly in the German and Austrian expressionist painting, while the main literary work of this thesis, the existential novel The Fall comes from the great mind of a French writer, Albert Camus), the research aspires to prove the interconnection of the two movements and their common tendencies, based on the analyses of chosen themes, motifs, technics, and structure. We propose the motif of screaming as the main part of the comparison, as it constitutes an essential axis of the occidental art, as well as the crucial contact point between Expressionism and Existentialism. In spite of the bountifulness of the various interpretations this motif offers, we have chosen only selected ideas and concepts. As far as the formal structure is concerned, the work is divided into three chapters, where the first two are focused on the origins, a brief characterization of the main point of the two esthetics. Connection between film and visual art in the 1st half of the 20th century

Jouzová, T.: Connection between film and visual art in the 1st half of the 20th century, [Master thesis], Prague 2017-Charles University, Faculty of Education, Department od Art Education, , 150p. (Attachments: art work of pupls and my own work on DVD) Master thesis is focused on connection between visual art and film in the1st half of the 20th century from the perspective of art history and film history and theory of filmu. It deals with significant art and cinematic styles, trends and lines which connects the sphere of film and visual art. I enrich the historical context through etymological point of view on the modern art and I use subjective associations to this etymological contexts. The mutual content, stylistic and artistic bases are substantiated by the examples of visual artists interested in making movies. In the theoretical text are indicated some didactic subtopics related to the subscribed topics out of artistic view. Some of these inserts can be used separately, some of these are connected to the didactical part of the work. There are the projects linking art and film production in a historical context. Canon of Czech modern art

The thesis deals with the formation of the canon of Czech modern art during the 20th century based on the analysis of art groups Osma, Skupina výtvarných umělců and Tvrdošíjní and their time. Every artist becomes an object of interest of art historian right after he creates an artwork. The art historians are trying to classify him and put him into the story of art history. The concrete interpretation of the artist and his artwork depends on different circumstances and always reflects the period, when it has been created. It is affected by social and political situation, preferred art historian approach, possibility of artworks reproduction, used terminology and stereotypes. Osma, Skupina výtvarných umělců and Tvrdošíjní has been chosen because their activity is connected with the origins of Czech modern art and the activity of their members is often reflected in the art historian literature. The chase of social-political situation during the 20th century allows naming also other topics that have influence on the form of the Czech modern art. The thesis analyses important exhibitions held between the years 1935-1998 and the survey literature written in the same time. Problem of human identity in the work of Federico García Lorca in the context of crisis of Europian thinking

The thesis focuses on two plays and one poetry collection by Federico García Lorca; El público, Así que pasen cinco an͂ os and Poeta en Nueva York, which together form the New York cycle and represent a new and unique phase in his compositions both from the point of view of content and form. The thesis concentrates on several distinctive motifs and themes related to the problem of human identity; ie the motifs and themes which discuss how to understand the individual or the human existence. This topic is reflected in the cultural context of Lorca's age, demonstrating that the atmosphere of the era corresponded with the author's personal perspective. The interpretation of human existence is strongly determined by the moment of death, therefore, the representation of death in the works and the related motifs are discussed in the thesis. At the same time, the similarity of Lorca's perspective with the philosophical ideas of the era is taken into consideration, with the emphasis on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. In this context, we also focus on the author's relation to Christianity and the use of the Christian motifs in his plays and poems. The Hidden Avant-Garde. Czech Avant-Garde Fiction between Individualism and Collectivism

in English This work focuses on the Czech afterwar avant-garde and its fiction in the wider European context. The main goal of our writing was diversifying literary historical field by integrating genre of short story and its authors into the interpretive frame of the prepoetistic avant-garde. We could intrude a canonic picture of the Czech avant-garde by enriching the interpretive frame of the new genre (short story) and new, often hardly known or forgotten, writers. Last but not least by doing so we were able to questioned and problematized basic oppositions such as expressionism × avant-garde, and mainly individualism × collectivism. We introduce the principal opposition individualism × collectivism, which in our opinion, organizes afterwar literary discourse, as a main connecting line between Czech avant-garde art and European art (collective and one of its manifestation - crowd, as one of the main themes of modernism and avant-garde). We interpretate beyond this scope the fictions of French unanimism as the main inspiration of the Czech afterwar avan-garde and its (collective) fiction as well.
