Verbs in Czech textbooks for the Deaf

The textbooks for Czech deaf people and textbooks for hearing foreigners is the subject of this thesis. The thesis focuses on the interpretation of verbs in them. The whole issue is framed within the broader framework of methods and procedures used in the education of deaf students. The first part deals with the problems of teaching Czech deaf people from the Czech Republic, especially teaching Czech as a second / foreign language. Attention is paid to methods of teaching foreign languages. The thesis is devoted to verbs in Czech language and Czech sign language, their functional and structural differences. The second part is a compilation of available textbooks of Czech language for deaf students, and textbooks of Czech language for hearing foreigners. It is directed mainly to the interpretation of verbs. The third part offers interviews with teachers from primary schools for the hearing impaired. The interviews are focused on their approach to teaching Czech in general, used textbooks, and the difficulties associated with teaching verbs. The conclusion of the thesis provides a summary of the general features of textbooks of Czech language for the deaf and textbooks of Czech language for hearing foreigners, especially their conception of the interpretation of verbs. This diploma thesis deals with national assessment of language abilities of hearing impaired pupils and closer focuses on pre-lingual deaf pupils at the ends of the primary and lower secondary schools. Based on the definition of the characteristics of the national assessment, the diploma thesis also focuses on an overview of currently used language tests, both at international level as well as it gives information about the practice in selected foreign education systems. Special attention is devoted to information that deal with the assessment of language abilities in the Czech Republic, and the form of participation of deaf pupils in such testing . The practical part is done by a research which was done to find out the views of those involved in the education of pupils with hearing disorders just the current assessment practice language skills of the pupils. In the final part of my diploma thesis is a possible outline for innovations for testing related to information from the preceding parts of my diploma thesis.
Teaching English to Deaf Students

This bachelor thesis focuses on the process of teaching the English language to students who are deaf. The objective of the theoretical part is to present possible differences in the process of teaching a foreign language that result from the different identity of deaf students and to illustrate the situation of teaching a foreign language to deaf students. The practical part aims to present various methods that may assist during the process of teaching. It also describes the observed lessons of English at schools for the hearing impaired.
Czech Signs for Elementary Calendrical Units

The goal of this thesis is to survey the signs of Czech sign language for basic calendrical units (seasons, months, days). The thesis is based on a set of linguistic data collected by the method of elicitation among deaf informants from six cities in the Czech Republic (Brno, Hradec Králové, Ostrava, Plzeň, Praha and Zlín). The set of linguistic data is described from the point of view of motivation including folk etymology. The topic of sociolinguistic variation is also covered in the thesis, because the data include lexical and phonological variants connected to particular regions or age groups. The expression of negation in Czech sign language

This bachelor thesis is the first material focused on the expression of negation in Czech sign language. It shows the most frequent mediums of manual and non-manual negation excerpted from the recording of natural communications between native deaf speakers, users of Czech sign language. This thesis also presents how to express negation in spoken languages and in some of the foreign sign languages.
Factors influencing interpreter's performance in educational facility

The thesis deals mainly with all the aspects having an impact on the interpreter's setting at primary and secondary schools and colleges. Whether special schools or mainstream schools with deaf students integrated. In the theoretical part, we can learn about characteristics of educational interpreting, development of this type of interpreting in the Czech Republic and the situation in interpreting in 1991 and since that year until now. Most of the work deals with the individual factors that influence the quality of simultaneous interpretation in general way. From these factors, I chose those that were specific to sign language interpreting in the area of education. To have an idea of what the current situation in the education of interpreters is, I interviewed 5 interpreters - one of each secondary school or college. In the practical part we will find a questionnaire survey of 19 Czech sign language interpreters working in the field of education. This survey aims to determine whether the factors have anticipated impact on interpreters in education during the interpretation process, and if so, to what extent. Grammatical Category of Time in Czech Language Textbooks for Deaf Pupils and for Foreigners

The thesis focuses on the way the grammatical category of time is presented in chosen textbooks of the Czech language for deaf and for foreigners. A small questionnaire survey, establishing which textbooks the teachers actually use in teaching Czech for deaf, whether they work also with textbooks for foreigners and what other materials they possibly use, is included. All the textbooks mentioned in the questionnaires are later analysed from the view of their presentation of the grammatical category of time, separately those for deaf and those for foreigners. In the second ones, inspiration for teaching deaf is being traced. At the end of the work there is an author's draft chapter of a textbook for deaf dealing with a part of the issue of verbs and times. The draft text contains an explanation and few exercises and concentrates on problematic phenomena.
Specifics of Translating Biblical Texts into Czech Sign Language

The bachelor thesis is concerned with the principles of translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses Bible translation in general, and more specifically, in relation to sign language translation. It summarises existing findings from studies on foreign translations of biblical texts into sign languages, such as American Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, Sign Language Lesco. The practical part provides an analysis of the Dictionary of Signs for Christian Concepts for Deaf People and two video translations of passages from New Testament into Czech Sign Language, making recommendations for updates to the Dictionary based on these findings. The thesis then brings together the theoretical knowledge and the present findings and proposes a set of principles and mandatory guidelines for translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. Role shifting in Czech Sign Language

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the expression of role shifting in Czech sign language. The goal of the thesis is to describe the mechanisms of expressing role shifting in Czech sign language within our survey and comparing the results with findings from abroad. The principles of work are mostly based on foreign literature and they are compared with Czech sign language. A part of the thesis is a DVD of deaf respondents' recordings who use Czech sign language and which illustrate the way of expressing role shifting in Czech sign language.
Conceptualization of emotions in the Czech Sign Language (On the example of anger)

This thesis is focused on the conceptualisation of emotions in Czech Sign Language with the emphasis on the linguistic conceptualisation of anger. At the beginning the author reveals basic theoretical issues of the cognitive linguistics of spoken and sign linguistics. Afterwards she presents some general facts about metaphor and metonymy in spoken and sign languages - with the main focus on the metaphorical-metonymic conceptualisation of anger - and shows metaphors and metonymies of anger in the English, Polish and Czech language. The core of the thesis consists of the linguistic research of anger in Czech Sign Language. The author identifies basic metaphors and metonymies of the concept of ANGER in Czech Sign Language within the empirically gained linguistic material. The gained data from all four languages are compared and presented in a table at the end of this paper.
