Krčmářová Jana 2015 Title: Forgetting traditional agricultural knowledge in modernization. Interdisciplinry historical reconstruction of Czech agroforestry. Abstract: Corresponding with the tradition of current ecological and historical anthropology the study concentrated on reconstruction of transformation of one of the key complex human ecological relationships - modernization of agriculture. The roots of the changes are placed into 17th century Britain yet during the last centuries they spread over the globe and in some cases are still spreading. The process of agriculture modernization was enlightened with analysis of its local progression in the Czech Republic and in the light of mechanisms of cultural memory.. The establishment of modern industrial agriculture was described as forgetting of contemporary used agricultural knowledge during the application of new ideal agriculture form on the contemporary agricultural ecosystem. The new form was derived from the principles of modern economy, sciences and the availability of new technologies and was pushed forward by expert and economic elites and state. The form was applied on the biocultural system-landscape cultivated in majority of cases by thousand years present locals. The current intensive and industrial agriculture in the Czech Republic has many nega-tive impacts on the environment. Agroforestry, i.e. growing trees on agricultural land while maintaining agricultural production, can minimize these negative effects. Tree species grown in agroforestry systems (AFS) fulfil a productive function and at the same time provide important ecosystem services. The aim of this methodology is to define agroforestry, characterize individual types of AFS and estimate their extent in the Czech Republic. The aim is to provide background materials on the basis of which it is possible to establish agroforestry systems on agricultural land. The result is a clear definition, classification and characterization of different AFS in Czechia. Furthermore, their extension is estimated, and their historical roots explained. The methodology of establishment of AFS proposes a suitable design, list of suitable of woody species and describes the procedure of correct tree planting and management. An important part of the methodology is the analysis of the legislative environment for tree planting on agri-cultural land, economic evaluation of AFS and also the selection of suitable subsidy titles for such establishment. Last but not least, the methodology summarizes the existing capacity building and education in agroforestry in the Czech Republic.

The aim is to evaluate the benefits and constraints of using agroforestry systems (AFS) in Czechia with a focus on the socio-economic, legal and environmental context. The project will evaluate planting of trees on arable land in areas affected by soil erosion and drought, and animal husbandry combined with tree components. Based on detailed literary review, socio-ethnological surveys, production and economic data gathered from farmers, the AFS benefits on the agricultural land will be fully evaluated. Furthermore, legislative constrainst and opportunities for tree growing on agricultural land will be analyzed. The final outputs will be the scientific publications and, in particular, the documents (methodologies) for the application and implementation of the agroforestry system in Czechia.
