Assimilation of voicing in Slovak speakers of English
Ortutayová, Dominika ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Popelíková, Jiřina (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the influence of the mother tongue, more specifically Slovak, in the speech of the Slovak speakers of English and subsequent appearance of the assimilation of voicing in the environments in which it is expected in both Slovak and English and then in those which are typical only for Slovak - and the production of the assimilation of voicing in those environments in English is considered an error. In the first part we introduce and specify the process of voicing in speech in general and then in the second part we proceed with the presentation of the concept of the second language acquisition and language interference. The empirical part is based on the analysis of the material spoken by 18 students, both males and females, reading the BBC bulletins. Our results show that the assimilation of voicing is an integral part of the speech of Slovaks in English, proving that they assimilate extensively in the environments typical for the Slovak language. Those are only partially typical for English as well - and thus they simultaneously produce assimilation errors. This knowledge could be taken in account during the learning process in order to eliminate such errors as much as possible. Key words: voicing, assimilation, Slovak, English, interference
Utilization of general rhythm metrics for differentiation of Slovak English from Slovak and English
Kaprál, Jakub ; Volín, Jan (advisor) ; Klégr, Aleš (referee)
The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze Slovak English from the perspective of speech rhythm in relation to its native (Slovak) and target (English) language. The first part contains theoretical background for the study of language rhythm, history of its research, and describes rhythmically relevant features of English and Slovak phonetic systems. It is concluded by summary of rhythmical differences between the two languages and hypotheses are proposed. The experimental part uses rhythm metrics for determination of phonetic properties of rhythm in Slovak English. It is based on recordings of one English and two Slovak representative radio reporters along with six recordings of Slovak students of English studies. The rhythm metrcis results for Slovak English closely approximate the results for native English but due to inconsistency of the results the question of aplicability of rhythm metrics to L1, let alone L2, remains open. Keywords: Slovak English, speech rhythm, rhythm metrics, prosody, second language acquisition

The first, theoretical part is concentrated more generally on the lexicology and the theory of homonymy, interlingual homonymy, and other paradigmatical relations between lexical units. The second, lexical part is devoted to the principles of making a dictionary; next, it analyses some of the phenomenons that showed up as problematic while making the mirror dictionary of the Slovak- Czech interlingual homonyms.
Slovak-Czech interlingual homonymy - lexical analysis on the base of Slovak-Czech dictionary (M-Po)
Márová, Sabina ; Nábělková, Mira (advisor) ; Šimková, Mária (referee)
(in English): The main topic is a Slovak-Czech lexical interlingual homonymy which has not been elaborated yet. The core of the work is (represents) a mirror dictionary of interlingual homonyms in Czech and Slovak, developed on the basis of a Slovak-Czech dictionary and a Czech-Slovak dictionary. The introductory part is, in general, concerned with the issue of interlingual homonyms and with the related intralingual paradigmatic relations. The second part of the dictionary contains principles for its forming and focuses in more detail on selected phenomena of the Slovak-Czech interlingual homonymy which results from the confrontation of Slovak-Czech vocabulary using translation dictionaries, expository dictionaries, national corpora and parallel corpora. Purpose of creation the dictionary of Slovak-Czech interlingual homonyms (ranging from letter M to P) was to get a picture of the extend of interlingual homonymy and types of interlingual homonyms in the existing lexikographical processing.

Similarity of Serbian and Slovak Language Concerning Substantives
Stojanovičová, Zorica ; Vlainić, Sandra (advisor) ; Jirásek, Karel (referee)
(English): In this bachelor thesis we were trying to compare Serbian and Slovak language in terms of vocabulary according to substantives. Due to extensiveness of the grammatical category of nouns we decided to define our thesis only on family and kinship terminology. In the process of comparing we were using translation and explanatory dictionaries as well as etymological dictionary which was the major indicator whether or not have these two languages the same origin. It turned out that the roots of both Indo-European languages date back to Proto-Slavic languages. While many of the old Serbian kinship names preserved until today, in Slovak we can observe the gradual disappearance. The reasons why they died out are a new way of life, moving from the place of the former residence what is resulting in limited meeting with friends and relatives. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part we write about the general terms relating to the family and relatives. The second part already deals with kinship terminology which we categorized into consanguinity (blood kinship), affinity and spiritual kinship.
The occurrence of word-initial glottalization in Slovak English
Uhrinová, Mária ; Skarnitzl, Radek (advisor) ; Popelíková, Jiřina (referee)
The occurrence of word-initial glottalization in Slovak English Mária Uhrinová Praha, 2012 Abstract The features of prosodic structure were shown to influence the occurrence of word-initial glottalization in English. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the occurrence of glottalization in word-initial vowels in Slovak English in relation to prosodic structure, specifically to word stress and position in the intonational phrase. The semantic status of words (lexical vs. grammatical) is also considered. The first part provides a brief overview of key concepts in second language acquisition with focus on acquisition of second language phonology. In addition, a summary of previous research on glottalization is given. The empirical part of this thesis is based on the recordings of 15 Slovak speakers of English. The results suggest that Slovak speakers use glottalization extensively in their production of English. This should be taken into consideration when looking for better methods for teaching English pronunciation. Keywords: glottalization, prosodic structure, Slovak, English, foreign accent
Multilingual analysis of human emotional states
Rendek, Tomáš ; Koula, Ivan (referee) ; Atassi, Hicham (advisor)
This work deals with the properties of the speech signal. At the beginning it introduces a process of generation of the speech. Then, it covers the prosodic features of the speech, which represent a related characteristic of emotions. It defines an emotion itself, as well as the basic features and parameters of the human speech. For the analysis we use the program called Praat. As it is an unknown program, we devote a part of the work to it, which acquaints us with its advantages. The next part of this paper comprises also two enclosed databases containing records of particular emotional states of human. These databases were created and collected for Slovak and German language. However, none of them contain spontaneous material. Next, the work concerns a concept of the neural networks. It regards it as a possible realization of recognizing of emotional characteristics. The initial analysis presents large number of gained features, out of which only the best twelve were selected on the basis of geometric separability. These features are distinct for both sexes, as well as for both nationalities. Consequently, they are used for training with a neural network. The work concludes by summarizing of the results discussing the successfulness with recognition of emotional states. It also gives possible reasons which lead to degradation of their successful classifying. The thesis contains a CD with all the partial and ultimate results, and files with records for Slovak and German language.
