T. S. Eliot and William Shakespeare: The Dynamics of Influence
Lakhno, Maryna ; Quinn, Justin (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
4 ABSTRACT T. S. Eliot once remarked: "I have tried to point out the importance of the relation of the poem with other poems by other authors and suggested the conception of poetry as a living whole of all the poetry that has ever been written."1 The interpretation of his poetry depends on literary tradition and its understanding. By alluding to dead authors, Eliot created an oeuvre that can be fully understood only through research. He also contrasts the contexts of the past and present, and reinforces the importance of borrowing in the creative process. One of the authors that recurs in Eliot's writing is William Shakespeare. Eliot paid tribute to the Elizabethan playwright through the use of dramatic monologue, quotations and allusions to his themes and motifs. In this way, he expresses his longing for English cultural heritage, as Shakespeare is a symbol of Englishness. This bachelor thesis explores the influence that Shakespeare had on both Eliot's literary criticism and poetry, primarily in the period from the 1910s to the 1930s. With especial emphasis on Hamlet and Coriolanus, the thesis explores those qualities which Eliot emphasized and which would prove important for his own work, above all "The Love Song of Alfred J. Prufrock," The Waste Land and Four Quartets, as well as minor poems such as...
Intertextuality in Advertising
Žbirková, Nikola ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Šebesta, Karel (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the intertextuality in advertising. The theoretical part first of all defines the basic concepts, such as advertising, intertextuality and its types or transtextuality, and in addition includes selected approaches to intertextuality in advertising and their subsequent comparison. The practical part contains a design of an information system for working with a corpus and the introduction of the corpus itself, accompanied by comments and evaluation. The final section consists of an analysis of the corpus, which leads to the formulation of conclusions about how the source texts are modified and adapted. This thesis aims to: 1) find out how frequent is the advertisement based on the principle of intertextuality, 2) ascertain what means of intertextuality are the most utilized in advertising texts, 3) determine what type of source text is the most frequently referred, 4) design an appropriate information system to store, search easily and comment on the collected material.

Matějková, Michaela ; Schneiderová, Soňa (advisor) ; Chejnová, Pavla (referee)
My bachelor thesis deals with Intertextuality in the genre of newspaper commentary. The theoretical part describes the concept of Intertextuality in various Czech language guides and its interpretation. Further I clarify the genre of analytical style of journalism - the commentary - its basic features and distinctive position in journalistic style. Material for the practical part I excerpted from the daily press in its electronic form, in the period from August 2012 to March 2014. Specifically, I focused on the daily Mladá fronta Dnes and Lidové noviny. An analysis of the material revealed that the authors of very frequent use of intertextuality apply their general knowledge, give this genre a strong distinctive character, expressing a subjective evaluation and gaining the attention of the recipient. Intertextual links in comments across all topics usually appear already in the headline of comments. The most common forms are allusions, quotations or paraphrases. Serves as a source pretext original literary, film, music, as well as sayings and proverbs or biblical references.
Hypostasis, Conversion, Categoriality
Židek, Jan ; Bičovský, Jan (advisor) ; Starý, Zdeněk (referee)
In modern linguistics since the 1970s, there seems to be a general shift from langue to parole and from discrete categories to more "blurry" ones. With it comes a need for revitalisation of some older terms that fell out of usage because of the fact that they describe something (seemingly) outside system. One such term is hypostasis, a synchronic phenomenon of word- formation under certain constrains (e.g. null derivation from an inflected form). This work's aim is to probe its usefulness in modern linguistics and the viability of its revitalisation. In this work, I agree with now generally accepted idea that every grammatical system is in itself inadequate with regard to completeness of its function, and that it needs from time to time adapt to new situational contexts through compensation strategies; some of the ways it does that can collectively be called "hypostasis".

Provisional Constellation 2015
Kadlčák, Šimon ; Vítková,, Lenka (referee) ; Cenek, Filip (advisor)
The book Boční pohled na zatmění Slunce (Side View on Solar Eclipse) is an artistic attempt to articulate own creative methodology. Simple verbal declamations, quotations from books and conceptual sketches may be understood as a headword complement to my work of past few years. If the reader is, by any reason, unacquainted to that work, the book should work as an autonomous poetical unit.
