On the Iconography of the Cassone Panels from the National Gallery in Prague

At the time when the Middle ages were almost, but not quite, gone and depictions of pagan gods in "high" art were still scarce, relatively common objects were covered with ancient stories and classical myths. On Florentine marriage chests of the Quattrocento reappeared some scenes that were neglected and forgotten for centuries. These chests, so called cassoni, played an important role in the renewal of secular painting in the Renaissance. This research looks at two cassone panels from the National Gallery in Prague, The Judgment of Paris and The Rape of Helen. It is focused on their iconography and its sources. Special attention is paid to the female figure with wings on her head that appears in The Judgment of Paris. She is identified as Venus, who is often depicted with wings in Florentine art of the 15th century. Possible literary sources are also considered.
Etruscan rock-cut tombs and 3D modeling

This thesis examines Etruscan rock-cut tombs that are characteristic for inland southern Etruria and are dated from second quarter of the 6th century BC to the end of 3rd and beginning of the 2nd century BC. Thesis is focused on the architecture of the tombs, their typology, decoration, iconography and their architectural evolution. Main sites in Archaic period are necropoleis in San Giuliano, Blera, Tuscania and for Hellenistic period necropoleis in Norchia, Sovana and Castel d'Asso. Second part of thesis examines the potential of 3D recording, analysis, virtual reconstruction and virtual anastylosis for the study of the tomb façades through the case studies of the "Tomb of the Siren" from necropolis of Sovana and the "Doric Tombs" from necropolis of Norchia. Depiction and Meaning of Animals in Renaissance Portraiture: The Case of the Ermine

This thesis deals with representation of animal and their meaning in european portrait painting of the period spanning from second half of 15th century till the beginning of 17th century and it sets to describe relationship between humans and animals occurring in the symptomatic space of portraiture as well as the renaissance culture in general. Among the art genres it is portrait where we can trace immediate interaction of humans and animals as the later are usually included in the painting on demand of the submitter of the artwork and are positioned there as a symbol though which the portrayed person communicates with viewer. The fundamental characteristic of animal symbolic is its ambivalence and multiplicity of meaning shaped over centuries as the renaissance iconography of animal have been dominantly formed by ancient manuscripts and medieval bestiaries. From the wide specter of animals represented in this period my thesis is focusing in detail on the case of ermine which was one of the less commonly represented animals. This Master Thesis "The animals in the cathedral. Architectural sculpture of animals and fantastical creatures by parlerian lodge in the St. Vitus Cathedral, their symbols and iconography" looks into the architectural sculpture of animal's motifs and motifs of fantastical Creatures. The goal of this work is to summarize recent aspects of research about this theme, explain in more detail individually motifs of animal's and their Iconography and their meaning for Cathedral of St. Vitus. Also this thesis want to explain how could this special animal's motifs fit into the places, where are they have been situated. Their Iconography is taken with larger perspective, by literature's reception from antique over czech medieval age. Concerning animals and fantastic Creatures in the southern vestibule - pelican and phoenix; an owl in the Crown Chamber; gryphon and fight between cat and dog in the inner triforium; an eagle, an unicorn, a horse with bird's legs, a phoenix, a pelican, a stag, a lion, a gryphon, a lioness, a bear, a "cat" and three chimera in the outer triforium; a lion, a dog, a dragon and an eagle in buttresses and at least a dragon and a goat on the Big Tower. The Prague painting Saint Luke painting the Virgin by Jan Gossaert called Mabuse

The National Gallery in Prague conserves an important masterpiece of the Fle- mish mannerist Jan Gossaert. The panel painting Saint Luke painting the Virgin was originally determined for the cathedral of Saint Roumboult in Mechelen in Belgium. The artwork represents one of the first applications of Renaissance style behind the Alps. Gossaert was educated in this new style during a visit to Italy several years earlier and combined it with traditional Flemish art. The artist worked for the court of Margaret of Austria in Mechelen around the year 1513, the year the painting originates. His traditional style became influenced by the techniques used in Mechelen by foreign artists. The theme is painted the tradi- tional manner of work on an oak panel. Renaissance and Gothic architecture is decorated by " en grisaille" sculptures. A seemingly simple theme is given deeper meaning thanks to these objects containing hidden meanings. There are also some prints from the time the panel was in the Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague due to which we can contemplate the progress in presentation of the painting during centuries. 1
Golden foils from Borg - iconographical and religious analysis

5A Abstract This work gives the analysis of iconographic elements which are found on five gold foils. These foils depict two figures which look at each other from their profile. Foils were found in the foundations of the chieftain house in Lofot's islands in Northern Norway, which is from the Migration to the Viking period. For the reason of analysis the author demonstrates three main groups of gold objects - gold bracteates, gold foils and one medallion. On these objects we can find a pair of two figures and these objects were found in Scandinavia. The author presents here the context of such finds, iconographic elements and academic interpretations of the depiction. Author compares the elements such as type of foil, appearance of eyes, posture of man and woman, their dress and haidress with 91 foils from Scandinavia, and also with bracteates and other objects. She notices the partial concordance among these elements and the other objects and she seeks the iconographic essence and function of each foil from Borg which is later confronted with the theories of the influence of religion. Because of lack of attributes on the foils, the author's assumption is that there is no general depiction of gods on the foil. The Diploma thesis "Devotion and iconography of st. Mary Magdalen" - Two biblical characters have been associated with Mary Magdalene since the time of Gregory the Great; the unnamed sinner and Mary of Bethany. According to the Bible Mary Magdalene was one of the women who accompanied Jesus during His ministry. She was the woman from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons. She washed Jesus' feet with her tears and ointment. When Jesus was crucified she was there standing under the cross. She was present at His funeral. On Easter Sunday she went to the grave of the Lord to anoint His body. She discovered the empty tomb and saw the resurrected Jesus, who appeared to her as a gardener and sent her to announce His Resurrection to His disciples. She is considered "the apostle of the Apostles". According to an old French legend she was put in a boat without sails or oars and sailed to Marseilles, where she preached the gospel. Then she retreated to a cavern. There she lived as a recluse for thirty years. Every day she was lifted by angels up to heaven. She was buried in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume. The first part of this thesis is concerned with the development and the history of the Ways of the Cross. The kinds and the forms of the Ways of the Cross are distinguished here as well. This part also contains the summary of several original Czech Calvarias and the Way of the Cross. The following chapter introduces the of the depiction of particular stations and also contains the summary of new Czech Ways of the Cross. The Work of Fabián Puléř

This thesis deals with Fabian Puléř, an illuminator who lived in the 2nd half of 16th century in Prague, and about his workshop in the Old Town. The main theme is the graduals and their fragments, which were made in his shop or are believed to be made there (the Metropolitan St. Vitus Temple Gradual, the Gradual of Čáslav, the Gradual of Žlutice, three illuminations from the collection of National Gallery in Prague, the two-part St. Valentine's Gradual from the Old Town, the fragments of Kaňkovský Gradual, the Gradual of Louny owned by Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora, the Gradual of Český Brod), their description and cataloguization. Apart of critically rewieving the literation on the subject to this day, my thesis follows the life of Fabian Puléř regarding archival sources and also influences and impulses behind his work. It also contains crucial chapter about iconography of utraqistic musical manuscripts and about the litterateur brotherhoods, who ordered these hymnic books.
Disabled people in prehistoric and early medival ages

The theme of this bachelor thesis concerns with people with disabilities in prehistory and early Medieval Ages. It gathers and evaluates osteological data from sample of Czech archaeological journals, that may prove disability. It sums up current state of knowledge and mentions various examples of reflexion of disability in mythology, laws, literature and iconography of past societies and current ethnographical parallels.
