English as a Lingua Franca from the perspective of Czech people

This thesis deals with the development and global spread of the English language. The main purpose is to examine the prevailing attitude in Czech society towards English as a language which can be used as a tool of communication with people worldwide. The theoretical part begins with an introduction of the concept English as a lingua franca followed by the historical development of English in the context of historical events which have had fundamental effect on the spread of the language. Furthermore, the author outlines the position of English in the Czech Republic. The practical part uses a quantitative survey to examine whether Czech people are aware of the current position of English in the world and to what extent is the knowledge of the language important to them. The survey also focuses on the level of English in the Czech Republic and the willingness of Czechs to use the language. The results of the survey are compared with theoretical findings.

Anežka Jiráková Folk Religion in Scandinavia Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts, 2011 Abstract The bachelor thesis called Folk Religion in Scandinavia with the subtitle Dwarf, Giant and Elf in Changes is focused on the development of three supernatural beings - dwarf, giant and elf. More theoretical first part is focused on the analysis of spoken and written word and its application on the scandinavian mythology. The main topic is the characterization of development and changes of dwarf, giant and elf from the earliest surviving references to the present. The emphasis on the etymology of words is seen throughout of this text. The thesis includes research conducted among four danish respondents. One of the questionnaries is included in the text, as well as the part with pictures.

Learner goals and attitudes to mistakes from an ELT and ELF perspective

The present research focuses on students' attitudes and preferences towards English language learning at Czech private language schools. In essence, the thesis focuses on unearthing the relationship and attitudes of students towards language mistakes, goals, and creativity. The study approaches language learning from more and less norm-bound perspectives and the English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) paradigm is introduced. In connection with the main focus of the research the intention is also to detect tendencies that could hint at the suitability of integrating knowledge about ELF into English Language Teaching (ELT). To obtain original data from the selected target group I conducted a mixed-method research (a questionnaire survey and in-class observations). The key concepts discussed are: mistakes, learner goals, learner needs, accuracy and language creativity (or 'languaging'). Production of weak forms of prepositions by non-native speakers of English

This bachelor thesis aims to reveal and describe to which extent non-native speakers of English from different L1 backgrounds employ weak forms when producing prepositions. The theoretical part focuses on vowel reduction and its importance for the natural rhythm of English. This concept is further explored from the Lingua Franca Core perspective and its approach to teaching vowel reduction. In the practical part, the analysis of a series of recordings is carried out. The recordings were taken from the L2-ARCTIC speech corpus of non-native English (Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, and Vietnamese). The purpose of the analysis is to explore whether and how speakers with different L1s reduce vowels in canonically weak forms of prepositions. The focus is placed on the quality and quantity of vowels in said prepositions and their duration with regard to their occurrence in either initial or medial positions. Improving Extraction of Information From Executable Files

This thesis deals with extension of an open-source decompiler project called RetDec maintained by the Avast company. The goal is to develop an extension of data extraction from executable files for malware analysis improvement. The thesis proposes several possible improvements on data extraction in the RetDec project. The most useful of these suggested enhancements are then selected and implemented. The selected enhancements involve calculating a hash of symbol names in Linux executable files and a more extensive analysis of Authenticode format, a Microsoft technology for digital signing of executable files for Windows operating systems. The thesis implements the selected additional data extractions in the RetDec project and tests them on real-world malware samples.

Low-level measurement of ELF magnetic fields

This Master's thesis deals with design of sensor network for synchronised low-level recording of changes in magnetic part of Earth's field in ELF band in multiple places. The goal is acquisition of changes due to solar storm activity, while taking into account, that in research of geomagnetic effects connected with solar events is spectrum of interest broader and reach up to VLF, where a solution is often made of combination of receivers in ELF and VLF, a decision was made, after consulting with thesis supervisor and researchers, that device will be designed for ELF, but can be easily modified, by changing preamplifier, for using in higher frequency bands, creating a solid founding for further measurements and research in this field.

Debugging Information in Linker

This thesis describes the conversion between the CCOFF object file format and the ELF file format. We start with a general object file format and its debbuging information, then we focus closely on the ELF, CCOFF and DWARF debugging information. The functionality of the CCOFF format is encapsulated in the ObjectFile class library. Then follows the description of creating an ELF object file, its filling with the proper data and its conversion back to the CCOFF format.

Tools for Executable File Format Conversions

This paper describes methods and procedures used for object file format conversions. It introduces several commonly used formats (ELF, PE, E32Image, DEX) and project Lissom's object file format (LOFF). It contains basic information about libraries manipulating these formats and a description of a new library managing E32Image. The primary objective is to implement a program converting files between common formats and LOFF. This problem is solved by mapping all critical information from one format structures to another. To accomplish this task, it was necessary to modify and extend some features of Lissom object format. The result is the plugin based application capable of creating valid and runnable executable files in mentioned formats.

Graphical Viewer and Simple Editor of ELF File

The goal of this thesis is to create an application with graphical user interface that provides graphical overview of internal structure for binary files in ELF format while also allowing simple editing. The application handles corrupted files and supports Windows and Linux operating systems. It is implemented in C++ with graphical interface created using Qt library. To picture the internal structure of the given ELF file, a custom diagram was designed and implemented.
