Re-established partnership: Analysis of the American-Philippine security cooperation during Bush and Obama administrations

This bachelor thesis analyzes the security cooperation between the United States and the Philippine Republic during the period between 2001 and 2016 during which the security cooperation went through major changes. The U.S.-Philippine alliance became one of the cornerstones for the stabilization of the turbulent region of Southeast Asia. The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the areas of mutual cooperation, what are the arguments for the improvement of the partnership and what role was played by the People's Republic China in forming this relationship. The first chapter is explaining the historical context of the cooperation which is necessary to deepen the understanding of the topic. The second part analyses the security threats which influenced the building of the security cooperation between Washington and Manila. The third chapter focuses on the evolution of the U.S.-Philippine security relations during George W. Bush's administration. Bush's declaration of War on terror had a significant impact on improvement of the U.S.-Philippine security relations. The last chapter analyzes president Obama's Pivot to Asia and examines how Chinese military activities are reflected in Washington's relations with Manila. Assessment of U.S. and Mexican strategies to combat the drug trade

Primasová Rachel Abstrakt The drug trade between Mexico and the US is an important issue. With Barack Obama's era, the perception of the drug trade has been changed. Obama chose to look at this problem as a health issue. His attitude was distributed via the National drug control. However, at the end of his presidency strategy's goals had not been fulfilled and numbers of overdose deaths have been increasing as well as the number of addicted people. In Mexico, Felipe Calderón chose a strongly repressive attitude via the National development plan. His attitude became the "drug war" that caused violence in the street and led to the extension of the conflict. Next president Enrique Peña Nieto promised to take a step back to peace. But in the end, mortality raised to the maximum and the drug trade continued to be a great security problem. Both the US and the Mexican strategies failed to fulfil their goals due to not approaching the drug trade as a complex issue and disregarding changing circumstances. Pivot to Asia: Case Study of American Democracy Promotion in Myanmar, 2011 - 2016

Promotion of democracy, a traditional tool of American foreign policy, was used also during Barack Obama's presidency through open dialogues and mutual cooperation also with non- democratic nations. The United States during Obama's administration renewed and connected diplomatic relations with countries that were overlooked by previous American administrations. This thesis is focusing on the foreign policy concept during Obama's second term, namely Pivot to Asia. Support of universal values and democracy was one of the central pillars of this policy. The main goal of this thesis is to argue if concentrated American presence and activity in 2011-2016 in Southeast Asia either supported democratic growth or led to democratic backsliding in the region. Specifically, Myanmar had gone through major political transformation since 2011. Ruling junta implemented reforms that opened up space for democratic opposition in the country and reduced sanctions and the policy of isolation from many Western states. Changes within Myanmar government in 2011-2016, American policy towards Myanmar, and normalization of American-Myanmar relations are three examples used in this case study that provides concrete approaches of American administration within Pivot to Asia.

Obama Administration's Approach Towards Fracking: Environmental Agenda As a Priority or Secondary Issue?

Hydraulic fracturing represents a significant part of the growing mining and oil industry. The most significant fracking expansion occurred during the period of Barack Obama, whose statements during his candidacy were directed against the oil industry. Based on this, environmental advocates expected Obama to seek to regulate fracking. Under the pressure, Obama was forced to take some steps against fracking, but they could not be so drastic as to create too much complication for the industry. The present work analyzes the steps and regulations adopted by the Obama administration, along with the reactions of supporters and opponents of fracking to the measures. Based on this analysis, the work points out that despite the Obama administration's efforts to introduce regulations to protect the biosphere and communities around fracking, the measures were insufficient and in some cases did not raise any standards for the oil industry. The work also found that due to the significant impact of fracking on the US economy, Barack Obama could not afford to set stricter regulations and in many cases combined the solution of environmental problems with economic solutions or with national security or energy independence. This thesis discusses the foreign policy of Bush and Obama administration with emphasis on the specific cooperation with the European Union. The aim of this thesis is to describe the difference between Bush and Obama administration using comparative analysis. There were found significant differences between these two administrations and further discussed ways which lead to the changes of the American foreign policy.
