Sociological Analysis of Sexuality in Contemporary Czech Feature Films

The following bachelor's thesis from a sociological perspective analyze sexuality in contemporary czech feature films. The film medium belong in sociology between the marginal area of research, especially in the Czech academic sphere. Therefore this thesis is trying to convince that it's reasonable to pursue this phenomenon with more intensity, because the given research can provide very stimulating results. The thesis explores the history and theory of sociological approaches to film, including point of view on film representation or ideology. It submits, how the first sociologists wrote about film and also describes the way how we regard on film with sociological prism. Furthermore it defines our theoretical and analytical view of human sexuality. Bachelor's thesis based on the social construction of reality and simultaneously rejects biological determinism. This theoretical background is created from the inspirational ideas of authors, such as are Michel Foucault, Jeffrey Weeks, Pierre Bourdieu, Laura Mulvey and last but not least Louis Althusser. Czech Film Taste in Sociological Perspective

The aim of this work is to find specific preferences of Czech film consumers. By these specific preferences it is meant the type of stories, heroes or genres which does Czech film audience prefer. The analysis is made on the most popular films (i.e. with the biggest attendance) in last twenty years using the theory of Erving Goffman, especially his concept of frame analysis. By using the terms of frame analysis the content of the selected films is compared with the same amount of the most popular films in USA. This comparison is then used to find the differences or similarities among these two different areas, but in particular it is done to underline the specifics of Czech film audience. Master thesis The film and politics. Propaganda and political agitation in Czech feature film 1948-1956 regards form and range of political, respectively communist ideology in chosen successful Czech feature motion pictures of the above mentioned time period. Investigates how and how far communist ideology influenced the examined films, even e.g. how much open or hidden agitation and propaganda it was. Main question of the thesis is why these films - which are often designated as propagandistic, agitation or at least ideologically tendentious - were so attractive for their viewers at that time. The thesis is theoretically based on supportive literature on history, totalitarianism and Czech film and practically on analysis of particular movies, which are absolutely essential for that time period.
Linguistic and cultural specificity in Czech feature films dobbed for export

This thesis focuses on the transfer of Czech linguistic and cultural characteristics through English subtitles. Using four Oscar-nominated Czech films, it endeavours to explain to what extent English subtitles can influence and assist the understanding and artistic values of a Czech feature film when screened to a foreign audience. The paper is of a theoretical- empirical nature. Firstly, the parameters of audiovisual translation are described, together with the technical and linguistic features of subtitling, followed by a definition of culture-bound references categories. As part of the research, Western understanding and appreciation of Czech artistic heritage is summarised. The empirical part presents an analysis of culture- bound references transfer. Excerpts are taken from the Czech films The Wild Bees (Divoké včely), Up and Down (Horem pádem), Divided We Fall (Musíme si pomáhat) and I Served the King of England (Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále). The results of the analysis are contrasted with a survey on the reception of The Wild Bees film conducted with native speakers of English. The Image of the Artist in Czech Feature Films after 1948

After the Czechoslovak coup d'état of 1948, the cultural politics of the Communist Party became the only power that should organize, regulate and evaluate cultural affairs. This brouht radical changes of the status of artists. That artists who belonged to the rank of intellectuals had to follow needs of the new kind of society. They accepted orders from above and their activity was strictly controlled. Proletarian amateurs and folk art were officially encouraged. The examples of the progressive art were found in the USSR and also among personalities from the history of the national culture. Cinematography, to which was placed a requirement of topicality, also presented the new image of the artist. The most noticeable results were reached in biografical films about our classics and films exposing folklore and cultural life of the working class. The integration of an intellectual artist into the new society became a pivotal theme in movies Písnička za groš and Nezlob, Kristino. As episodic characters, we can find also completely negative types of artists - enemies of that new society. Czech Film Online Distribution

Bachelor thesis reflects the phenomenon of audiovisual media services on demand (Video on Demand, bellow as VoD) and their position on the local distribution market. The first part of thesis defines the term VoD in the perspective of Czech law and describes the history of VoD providers in the Czech Republic. The business models and strategy of VoD are represented on the examples of three VoD platforms (Aerovod, DAFilms and Alza Filmy). The thesis also includes the position of the National Film Archive to this issue. The second part of thesis focuses on the widespread problem of illegal online film distribution, which negatively affects status and the overall position of VoD; and the attitude of Czech producers and distributors to the current situation in online distribution. The conclusion is devoted to the prediction and expectation of future VoD development in the Czech Republic since the opening of global platform Netflix on local market.
