Models of data flow governance and their followers: Why do countries adopt one framework over another?
Dubravčíková, Klára ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
DUBRAVČÍKOVÁ, Klára. Models of cross-border data flow governance and their followers: Why do countries adopt one framework over another? Praha, 2022. 119 pages. Master's thesis (Mgr.). Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Science. Department of International Relations. Supervisors Dr. rer. pol. Michal Parízek, M.Sc., Ph.D. & Junprof. Dr. Jan Vogler. Abstract Currently, there are three different regulatory models of cross-border data flow, produced by three dominant actors in the international system - the United States of America, the European Union, and the People's Republic of China. As all three actively convey their model to other countries, posing new challenges to the global economy associated with the models' incompatibility, other countries face a policy-choice dilemma on what model to adopt. Consequently, the issue of mapping how the three approaches to data governance spread across the globe and exploring the rationales of states that adopt one of the three models arises. The thesis turns to this question and uses logistic regression analysis to find a correlation between the adoption of a specific cross-border data flow governance model and three sets of predictors that characterise the economic, social, and power relations between proponent-adopter pairs....
West African CFA franc and its influence on the development of relations between France and the Member States of the West African Economic and Monetary Union
Mikulková, Kristýna ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the CFA franc and its influence on Franco-African relations. The thesis deals with the historical context, the origin and gradual development of the CFA franc. As well as the role of the CFA franc in the context of mutual relations between France and the member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union. The thesis presents two main narratives connected with this issue, the neo-colonial point of view (which perceives the CFA franc as a neo-colonial weapon of France), as well as the opposite, anti- neo-colonial point of view (which perceives the CFA franc only as a currency without all of its negative connotations resulting from its history). In the research part of this thesis the method of a SWOT analysis was used and applied on both the neo-colonial and anti-neo- colonial narratives. As a result, it was possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with both narratives. The interpretation of the results allowed me to answer the main research question: Did the CFA franc play the role of a neo- colonial weapon of France in relation to the West African Economic and Monetary Union member countries?. The final result is ambiguous, it confirms that the CFA franc is often considered as a neo-colonial weapon of...
The Trade Policy Review Mechanism: Shedding light on non-compliance?
Rosendorf, Ondřej ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
This thesis examines the notion of monitoring mechanisms and their ability to identify non-compliance. The Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM) of the World Trade Organization constitutes the main focus of analysis. The purpose of the thesis is to improve the current empirical account of the functioning of the mechanism, and to examine the extent to which the mechanism is able to detect rule violations before they are taken up to the court, as well as factors affecting this ability. From theoretical standpoint, the thesis draws mainly upon rational institutionalism and other approaches related to notions of transparency and compliance. In particular, the thesis focuses on the concept of the so called information systems in international regimes. As regards methodology, the thesis relies on the method of content analysis the purpose of which is to procure empirical evidence of occurrence of matters related to non-compliance in trade policy reviews. Thus procured empirical evidence is then subjected to statistical analysis, including logistic regression. The thesis finds that TPRM covers surprisingly large number of matters that later become subjects of judicially confirmed rule-violations at the WTO. As much as 72% of the matters that are eventually taken up to court are mentioned in trade policy...

Szabo, Jakub ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate possible ideological changes inside the IMF in the time period from 1989 to 2014. This goal is achieved by examining annual reports published by the IMF, with attention on the most important tools of the IMF. Issues discussed through the IMF's surveillance and conditionality are the main indicator of possible reforms and changes. Based on the existent literature and example of the reform of the World Bank four hypotheses are formulated. Those hypotheses are dedicated to monitoring changes in perceived importance of welfare state, small government, good governance and fiscal policy. Firstly, current literature is presented with definition of the main concepts used in this thesis. Secondly, important tools of the IMF are described. Thirdly, collected data is described and this thesis concludes with data evaluation. With application of the methods of descriptive statistics and content analysis this thesis concludes with statement, that important shift from emphasis on weak state to strong state occurred and good governance became important theme of IMF's interest. However importance of the theme fiscal policy persisted.

Experiencing the Body and Self-Concept in People with Acquired Physical Disability
Ištoková, Lucie ; Pařízek, Michal (advisor) ; Preclíková, Andrea (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Experiencing the body and self-concept in people with acquired physical disability" tries to reveal how people with acquired physical disability perceive their physical body and how changes in physical experience and self-concept are intertwined. The work draws primarily from literature dealing with the philosophy of the body, the health consequences of paralysis and self- concepts within the range of social psychology. The second source is six interviews conducted with people after spinal cord injury in which I ask the circumstances of paralysis and the physical and psychological experiencing of paralysis. Based on literature review and interviews it is not possible to say that the change of the body is the primary trigger for changes in self-perception, however, the paralyzed body gets extra attention. It includes the lowered height position, health complications, the consequences arising from the loss of sensation in the affected parts or the need for increased care for physical fitness. People with such injury face a different view of the society, transformation in the partnership's role, insecurity in self-confidence and other facts, which are generally reflected in their self- concept.
