JAZYK A SOCIALIZACE VE DVOU ROMSKÝCH KOMUNITÁCH Language and Socialization in two Romani communities Dissertation Mgr. Pavel Kubaník ABSTRACT The thesis consists of several partial studies connected with the language socialization paradigm. Language socialization is a theoretical and methodological framework, which attempts to analyze a process of individual's socialization into particular society through the analyses of everyday interactions and its contextualization within broader cultural concepts of a particular society. The thesis is based on data from two separate fieldworks in two extended Romani families. The first family lives in the Eastern Slovak Romani settlement of Gav, the second family currently lives in Prague, where they recently came from another Eastern Slovak Romani settlement of Krásne. While in Gav the language of primary socialization is Romani, the Prague family ceased to speak Romani in child-directed communication, although the Romani language is still a significant communicative code in interactions between adults. Language contact: influence of Czech on Romani

This paper surveys the issue of the current contact between Czech and Romani, particularly the influence of Czech on Romani. The contact between the two languages has not lasted much longer than six decades, and so the Czech influence on Romani is not as heavy as it is in case of Hungarian and Slovak, the former contact languages of the variety we focus on, the North Central dialect of Romani. The paper is based on two recorded dialogues between the author and a native speaker of the dialect. The latter is a member of the second generation of Czech-born Roma, who has no or only limited contact with the previous contact language. The paper briefly summarizes the main sociolinguistic factors involved in the contact situation, both in a global and in a case-focused perspective. The core of the paper is an analysis of the boundary between fully adapted lexical borrowings on the one hand and (un-adapted) insertions of one- or multi-word Czech expressions into Romani on the other hand. Individual sections of the paper deal with topics such as gramatical words, discourse markers, institutional or cultural borrowings, tag switching, and multiple reasons for language alternation within a particular discourse.

Salesian christian mission among Roma at Poštárka, Slovakia

The bachelor's thesis deals with the reflection of Roma animators from the Salesian center at Poštárka in Bardejov on their life in the Salesian center from childhood to animation, what it gave them into their life, in what they see the success of the mission, in what they say the mission is unsuccessful. The work is based on the publication God Between Barriers, research project SIRONA 2010, which mapped the activities of religious movements among the Roma in Slovakia, forms of the social change in those communities that have undergone religious change and found out whether this change leads to social inclusion.

Supporting Programs for Substitute Families with Romany Children

This bachelor thesis deals with the substituting of family care for children with Roma roots in the Czech Republic. The main focus is the specific support programs for families who adopted Roma children. This thesis maps out existing support programs for the substitute families with Roma children. Three programs have been selected and described in detail, based on interviews with the ones who implement these programs. The description focuses mainly on the following aspects: The way in which Roma culture is explained to the substitute families, sources of information provided by the overseers of programs to the substitute families, and proportion of Roma and non-Roma workers involved in the preparation and implementation of these programs. The perspective of the support programs are supplemented by the reflection of these activities by the participants of the programs. This thesis also includes information on the outlying framework of the given subjects, i.e. the system of substitute child care in the Czech Republic. This thesis also points out the over-represented number of Roma children in group facilities compared to the majority of the population and, at the same time, applicants of substitute family care are unwilling to accept Roma children. Two forms of contemporary pro-Romani movement

Key words: Roma, pro-romani movement, emancipation, collective identity, Roma Pride, International Romani Day, Ara Art, Konexe Abstract This paper presents on an example of two organizations and events organized by them a contemporary pro-romani movement in the Czech Republic - their topics and their strategies of agency to achieving their aims. The introductory part deals with the historical development of the pro-romani movement and in the second part, the author describes in detail the activities of two organizations Ara Art and Konexe. The final part presents by the using of a categorical analysis of their members forms in which these organizations on their events (International Romani day and Roma Pride) constitute a Roma collective identity. Both events have a two-way character, which is based on the relationship of the category "we" (the Roma) with the dominant category "they" (the majority society). With this relationship, the organizers deal on these events by a strengthening of collective belonging and at the same time negations of stereotypes about Roma created by the majority. Their primary purpose is therefore a destigmatisation their own identity.

The migration of Slovak Roms to Carlsbad after 1945 (Case Study - settling down of the family Bílý and Sivák in Karlovy Vary in the years 1945 - 1952)

My thesis is focused on the post war migration of the Roms from Slovakia to Czech lands, on the example of my own family whose ancestors have settled down , in late 1940's, in the town of Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) on the western border of the then Czechoslovakia. After the presentation of the methods I have used in my research and their pitfalls, my work then concentrates on the migration of the given families, including their stay in two temporary migration locations (Prague/Praha, Pilsen/Plzeň), their returns back to their home villages in Slovakia and the departure for Karlsbad. The migration occured between 1945 and late 1940's when the Sivák and Bílý families settled in Karlsbad for good. The presented case study is dedicated to clarify what reasons led the founders of the two families to their depart from Slovakia and to map the entire process of their migration. I will discuss the factors which influenced their migration and the reasons that made them to settle down permanently in the Czech lands. Through this study I was able to outline one of the possible ways how the postwar migration of Roms from Slovakia to the Czech lands has evolved in the early post- war years.

Sexual and excretory vocabulary and contexts of its usage in Romani

This thesis deals with usage of special vocabulary - "sexual and excretion" - in different contexts in a Roma community in Rokycany. This thesis is actually analysis and it focuses on searching for equivalences and differences in Romani language. The author compares these expressions with Czech language as well. The sexual and excretion vocabulary is used in different contexts and it is often used in tabooed situations. The usage of those linguistic instruments depends on a speaker's status in the community.
