Analysis of the advantage arising from the swing laterality on the PGA Tour
Šuráň, František ; Červinka, Michal (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
Focusing on golf stances, the study examines if left-handed players possess advantages due to factors like golf course architecture. Examining a dataset from a prestigious male professional golf tour, we assess laterality's impact on earnings. A dummy variable is established to evaluate the influence of left- handedness, equaling one if a golf player is left-handed and 0 otherwise. The results confirm the underrepresentation of left-handed golf players, which con- trasts with the overrepresentation of left-handers in other sports. The analysis also reveals that strokes gained and driving distance are significant factors in golf player earnings, while the percentage of greens in regulation and our new variable is not. Interestingly, a randomly selected left-handed player tends to earn more and outperform a right-handed player in driving distance but not in the average number of fairways hit in regulation. The findings suggest that left-handers' advantages may be more significant at lower performance levels, where errors and bad shots are more common, leading to greater variations in outcomes between right and left-handed players. Incentives for Blood Donation in the Czech Republic: Case Study of Prague
Bošková, Aneta ; Chadimová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (referee)
Blood shortages prompt policymakers to find ways to increase the supply of blood to meet the health sector's demand. The aim of this thesis was to exam- ine the effects of selected incentives on blood donation. Using a questionnaire for blood donors, the data was collected at a transfusion station in Prague. The questionnaire focused on hypothetical choices of donors when offered a certain type of incentive. The probit model and linear probability model were cho- sen for analysing the hypothetical effects of incentives and determining the donors' significant characteristics. The results showed that the vast majority of respondents would donate as often as they currently do with any of the selected incentives. A small proportion of donors would, however, respond to the incentives. The financial incentive or small gifts would discourage a cer- tain proportion of donors; on the other hand, offering a voucher to pharmacy would motivate a small proportion of donors. Both probit and linear probabil- ity model revealed several important donor characteristics that affect attitudes towards incentives. One of the most significant characteristics was gender; the financial incentive would discourage women significantly more than men. Introduction of Paternity Leave: Expected Costs and Benefits in the Czech Republic
Jirůtková, Petra ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
Although paternity leave policies have already been in place in a majority of European Countries, paternity leave in the Czech Republic was introduced through legislation change only in February 2018. In this thesis, we focus on an evaluation of expected costs and benefits of paternity leave in the Czech Republic. Given the recent nature of the policy change, we provide an ex ante analysis. This analysis compares the actual situation as of 2016 with a hypothetical situation of implementing paternity leave already in that year. Unlike the European Commission studies analysing the introduction of paternity leave in other European countries, we take into account heterogeneous propensities of different socio-economic groups taking paternity leave, different scenarios of overall take-up rates and different on-the-job substitution rates for fathers. We show that the lowest expected yearly costs were 427 million CZK, while the highest calculated costs were 1.28 billion CZK. The lowest costs go hand in hand with the lowest take-up rate and a higher substitution rate. On the contrary, the highest costs were calculated for the highest take-up rate and a lower substitution rate.
Gender Index in the Czech Public Firms
Velková, Eliška ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the extent of gender inequality in the Czech labour market. More specifically, it explores the under-representation of women on board positions using an analysis prepared by Open Society which contains data of more than 500 Czech public firms. The data analysis is made using the method of Kohonen self-organizing maps. SOMs represent a type of artificial neural network which allows to uncover possible patterns in a dataset and also visualize the multi-dimensional input data as a two-dimensional mapping while preserving topological properties of the input. To date, there is no academic paper examining gender inequality on decision-making positions in the Czech labour market using the method of Kohonen maps. The used dataset includes 77 Czech regions and 14 variables. A choice of appropriate factors that may influence the participation of women in the labour market is essential. The results are presented in 5 clusters of regions which differ in level of gender gap. In conclusion, our results prove that self-organizing maps are a useful data mining tool which can simply interpret high-dimensional data sets. 1
Gender Differences in Life Satisfaction
Tolnykina, Anastasiia ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
What is happiness? This question has been asked by people throughout the entire existence of mankind. Initially, this problem was considered by philosophers who studied it from different perspectives. To date, identifying the sources of happiness and their dependence on external factors has not lost its relevance. Conversely, it became deeper, since economists have also joined in the study of this issue. A number of new approaches to the analysis of the level of happiness has appeared, and the research results can have a significant impact on the economic and social policy of countries. My thesis concentrates on gender differences in these measures, which is a topic of interest nowadays. Women's rights have highly improved over recent decades. How has it changed female life satisfaction? Has it somehow affected male happiness? These are the questions I consider in my research.
Video-Gaming and Adolescent Academic Performance
Simachyova, Valeriya ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
Video-gaming is a frequent choice for leisure-time activity among young males and females in advanced economies. This thesis studies cross-national differences in the association between the academic performance of students of both genders and video- gaming. The data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 wave was used to estimate the educational achievements in reading, science, and mathematics of over 156000 students with varying reported frequency of single- and multiplayer gaming in 29 countries. It was found that male single-player gamers outperform their non-gaming counterparts. On the other hand, there is no association between academic performance and single-player games for female students. Multiplayer gaming is found to have a negative relationship with the educational achievements of female and male students, regardless of time-dedication to gaming.
Income inequality analysis in developing countries in the SDG Framework
Galle, Antonín ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis analyses the effect of urbanization, secondary education, employment in agriculture and GDP on income inequality in developing countries in context of the Sustainable Development Goals programme. A panel data analysis on unbalanced panel of 99 countries in time period 1991 - 2017 is performed. Significant negative effect of education on income inequality has been found in the whole time period and the effect of employment in agriculture changed from positive to negative during the time period, suggesting that action directed at helping farmers in developing countries may deliver desirable effects.
Impact of the smoking ban on food and beverages services sector sales in the Czech Republic
Mitro, Tomáš ; Janský, Petr (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
Impact of the smoking ban on food and beverages services sector sales in the Czech Republic Tomáš Mitro The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the smoking ban implemented in May 2017 has had any impact on sales in Czech Republic's food and beverages services sector. This is done by constructing three different regression models on two outcome measures in order to examine the statistical significance of the smoking ban in these models. In two of the three models, the smoking ban shows no significant effect, while in one model it shows a positive effect. The positive effect, however, is argued to be partly due to the implementation of EET half a year prior to implementation of the smoking ban. This thesis can therefore definitely conclude no adverse effect of the smoking ban on sales in food and beverages services sector.
Determinants of the residential real estate prices in the CEECs
Stefanov, Adam ; Hlaváček, Michal (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
The development of residential house prices has been watched since the global economic crisis in 2008, because overpriced house prices and their following burst was one of the main factors of this crisis. The goal of this work is to analyse the influence of macroeconomic factors on house price growth in ten Central and Eastern European countries since the beginning of the third millennium. The main used methods are P/I and P/R ratios, graphical comparison of price leader effect of the capital city, and house price development and panel data analysis. P/I and P/R ratios show a slowly forming bubble in some countries, but they still do not reach pre-crisis values. Graphical analysis of the price leader effect confirmed the leader effect of the capital. Panel data analysis with fixed effects method was divided into several parts according to the frequency of the data and geographical relationship between countries. Analysis shows connection between house prices and economic growth, real wages and unemployment rate. In some regions, analysis points to the influence of the demographic factors or financial market development. Diversity of the results is caused by the fact that house prices are determined by different factors in different regions. Issues with the data also play some role in these...
