Understanding Concrete Environment in Geographical Education Research

This diploma thesis is focused on the phenomenon of understanding landscape among geographers in continuity with didactic purposes. The aim of this thesis is being reached by using a qualitative research methodology. The thesis builds on the initial investigation, focused on the question to which extend do pupils of grade 7th - 9th (upper primary school) are able to use their classroom knowledge on landscape in the field to understand/read concrete environment. In search for a geographical attitude while reading the landscape, four groups (two groups of geography graduates, geography teachers and a control group) were asked to find and come up with a solution in summing up the best way to perceive and read landscape. Diploma thesis consists of four parts. The first one presents definition of landscape and theoretical base to empirical research. The second one is description of my own field program and discussion of its aim and results. The third one describes qualitative research project including suitable methodology along with the description of the respondent choice, the structure of the questioning as well as the way of data collection and data analysis. Evaluation of pupils performance in geography at four-years high school

The diploma thesis deals with a deeper understanding of the professional beliefs of geography teachers in the area of evaluating the performance of pupils in the teaching of geography. On the basis of a qualitative investigation, answers two research questions were sought: (1) How do high school geography teachers acquire the competence to evaluate students in their teaching? (2) Which factors influence the teacher's way of evaluating students? The work structure has a traditional layout. The first part frames the selected issue and subsequent research in a more general context. In addition to the explanation of the essence of the starting theory, i.e. the theory of information dissemination, key concepts - professional beliefs and the very competence (competence) of the assessment are defined here. In the practical part, the work focuses on the results of semi-structured interviews with 10 geography teachers in four-year grammar schools. The responses of the respondents were analysed (coded, categorized) in order to answer the research question. The contribution of geography from the perspective of high school students

The main aim of the thesis was to know and understand how pupils of grammar schools perceive the contribution of geography to their personal and future academic and professional life. This aim was concretised and fulfilled through 4 research questions. The research questions are: How do grammar school pupils perceive the usefulness of the different topics in the subject of geography and the skills developed in the subject of geography? How do grammar school pupils see the application of geographical knowledge and skills in their current and future academic and professional life, and how do they see the application of geographical knowledge in professional life in general? How do grammar school pupils perceive the contribution of geography to their future study and working life and how do they perceive the overall contribution compared to other subjects? What contribution do pupils who perceive the usefulness of the knowledge and skills from geography lessons in their future personal, academic and professional lives attribute to the subject of geography? The possibilities of the use of virtual reality in geography education

The Bachelor thesis is focused on the implementation of virtual reality in geography teaching. Its aim is to gain deeper knowledge about possibilities and possibly even weaknesses of the use of the concept of virtual reality in geography teaching in general education schools. The thesis takes the form of systematic research. The selection of studies is made on the basis of predefined keywords in available professional foreign and Czech papers. Through the research of publications of a theoretical, methodical and research nature we want to summarize the existing knowledge about the methodology of geography teaching using virtual reality and about research focused on this issue. Evaluation of pupils performance in geography at primary schools

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of evaluation in teaching geography from the teacher's point of view. The first part of the work is focused on the theoretical framing of the researched issues. The main concepts addressed are the professional beliefs of the teacher, the processes and results of teaching, the subject of evaluation and the functions and methods of pedagogical evaluation. For the practical part of the work, a qualitative research survey was conducted in the form of a semi-structured interview with 14 geography teachers in primary schools. We observed the professional conceptual apparatus of geography teachers in oral communication focused on teaching evaluation. The frequency of pre-established basic terms and the frequency of terms that were said beyond the terms set by us were monitored. Five basic terms were found, with which all respondents operate, namely mark, test, knowledge, presentation and by rote. The term mark has the highest frequency. Subsequently, a typology of teachers was created according to their approaches to teaching evaluation (stagnant teacher, overstepping teacher, instructed teacher and advanced teacher). Gifted Students in Geography

This thesis is one of the first in the Czech Republic dealing with the theme of gifted students in geography. The main aim of the thesis is to define the character of gifted grammar school student in geography. This wide and interdisciplinary theme is then divided into several scientific subthemes and questions. The basic theoretical approaches to the definition of gifted students generally and gifted students in geography are discussed in the theoretical background. The research part contains of the content evaluation of the International Geography Olympiad and the outcomes of the structured guided interviews. The content of the questions of the International Geography Olympiad is evaluated through the own constructed structured evaluation and then these questions are compared to the official Czech requirements for the graduation exam in geography. The outcomes of the guided interview are organized and interpreted using the method of the framework analysis. Despite the few problems while getting and analysing the data, there are finally defined the main characteristics of the gifted grammar school student in geography in the summary of this thesis.
The conception of geography fieldwork on example of České Budějovice and its surroundings

This thesis deals with the problem of geography fieldwork at Czech schools. Its main aim is to suggest a concept of fieldwork for secondary schools in České Budějovice, which could also be used for other schools. The thesis consists of three parts. In the first one, which is focused on theory, basic terms are defined according to the analysis of literature. Aims of education as well as benefits, problems and aims related to geography fieldwork and its concept in current education documents are also discussed there. In the second part, principles of the creation of tasks for fieldwork in České Budějovice with its surroundings and appropriate methods of their evaluation are specified. On the basis of geographical characteristics of the region, appropriate aims of education and localities are chosen for the geographical topics taught at schools. The Attitudes Formed by Geographical Education

This thesis deals with students attitudes, that are an interface between pedagogy, sociology, psychology and subject didactics. The main objective of this thesis is to zoom attitudes, refer to level of theirs processing in curriculum documents, make a suggestion of attitudes, present methods of their detection and comment examples of last research. These objectives are undermining the structure of thesis. The first part defines the available literature on key concepts. It is followed by analysis of curriculum documents from Czech Republic and selected countries in terms of completion and particular attitudes in them. Based on the analysis of curriculum documents a proposal focused on areas where the teaching of geography should be concentrating in Czech Republic is presented. The fifth chapter outlines the methods used to measure attitudes that can be used for the planned research. Then in the sixth chapter examples of studies and researches aimed at identifying the positions using the above mentioned methods are stated. The thesis is concluded with the effort to assess the status and degree of completion of the positions in the current Czech education and outline the planned investigations of students' attitudes.
