This thesis consists of two parts: the first one is a Czech translation of two parts of the 6th chapter from the book "Birthing Fathers: The transformation of Men in American Rites of Birth" by Richard K. Reed, the second one is an analysis of the translation. The analysis begins with an outline of the intratextual and extratextual factors of the original text (according to Christiane Nord), it is followed by an overview of the most salient issues, which emerged during the process, and their solutions, then the analysis deals with the translation shifts and ends with the description of the chosen translation method. The text itself tackles the issue of men in the pocess of birth and is based on an anthropological research. Annotated Czech Translation of Selected Chapters from "This Little Britain: How One Small Country Changed the Modern World"

(in English): This bachelor thesis aims to translate two chapters of the book This Little Britain into Czech and to comment on this translation afterwards. The commentary includes the following parts: assignment for the translation, translation analysis of the source text based on the work of Christiane Nord, the description of issues arising during the translation process and possible solutions to these issues, and finally, the descriptions of the translation shifts as defined by Jiří Levý which are accompanied by the explanation why these shifts have occurred. Linguistic and cultural specificity in Czech feature films dobbed for export

This thesis focuses on the transfer of Czech linguistic and cultural characteristics through English subtitles. Using four Oscar-nominated Czech films, it endeavours to explain to what extent English subtitles can influence and assist the understanding and artistic values of a Czech feature film when screened to a foreign audience. The paper is of a theoretical- empirical nature. Firstly, the parameters of audiovisual translation are described, together with the technical and linguistic features of subtitling, followed by a definition of culture-bound references categories. As part of the research, Western understanding and appreciation of Czech artistic heritage is summarised. The empirical part presents an analysis of culture- bound references transfer. Excerpts are taken from the Czech films The Wild Bees (Divoké včely), Up and Down (Horem pádem), Divided We Fall (Musíme si pomáhat) and I Served the King of England (Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále). The results of the analysis are contrasted with a survey on the reception of The Wild Bees film conducted with native speakers of English. Commented translation:Introductory: Language Defined (E.Sapir: Language: An Introductionto the Study of Speech, 1921)

The thesis consists of a Czech translation of the first chapter, Introductory: Language Defined, from Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (New York: 1921, Harcourt, Brace and Company) by Edward Sapir and of a commentary on the translation. The commentary consists of a translation analysis of the source text, typology of translation problems and their solutions, and typology of translation shifts. The translation method was chosen based on the analysis, which was based on the method of Ch. Nord. The main objective of the translation was to preserve the informative function of the source text and it's style with regard to the documentary function of the translation and the conventions and constraints of the target language.

Surtitling operas

V roce 1983 se v kanadském Torontu při operním představení poprvé nad jevištěm objevily titulky s překladem zpívaného textu. Titulkování se ujalo a postupně rozšířilo do operních domů celého světa. Dnes si už bez nich divák návštěvu opery ani nedokáže představit. Spolu s novou technologií vznikl i nový typ překladatelské činnosti, velice vyhraněné a náročné. Snad vzhledem k relativní novosti tohoto jevu anebo proto, že k umění neodmyslitelně patří pluralita názorů a přístupů, je překlad operních titulků doposud disciplínou poměrně neustálenou, s řadou argumentů pro i proti, ale i odlišných přístupů k samotným překladatelským operacím. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zmapovat historický vývoj a současný stav operního titulkování v České republice i v zahraničí z hlediska uměleckého, společenského i technologického a nahlédnout překlad operních titulků jak prizmatem vědeckých oborů lingvistických a translatologických, tak z hlediska hudební vědy i konkrétní divadelní praxe. Titulky se pochopitelně pořizují i pro účely televizních záznamů operních představení, avšak hlavním objektem zájmu této práce jsou titulky doprovázející živé operní představení. Professional interpreter in the 21st century: new technologies and social networks

The topic of this master's thesis is new technologies and social networking sites in the field of interpreting. The theoretical part discusses how, over the course of time, technological advances have altered not only the face of interpreting itself but also the way interpreters work, and presented them with new possibilities. This part also briefly deals with the history and functioning of social networks, namely Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and examines the possibilities social networking sites offer in terms of marketing. The empirical part presents conclusions drawn from the study. The purpose of the study was to determine general tendencies in the use of new technologies and social networks by Czech interpreters. The questionnaire distributed online focused mainly on the following points: ownership of smartphones and tablets, awareness of technical novelties in interpreting, use of social networks for professional and marketing purposes. A total of 150 people took part in the study. The analysis of collected answers revealed that the number of tablet or smartphone owners amongst the participants is quite high, that participants are skeptical towards nontraditional ways of interpreting and that interpreters use social networking sites rather for communicating within the interpreting community...
