Bicanová, Jana ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Irmanová, Eva (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on the issues of forming national identity and related possibility to reinterpret Hungarian uprising of 1956 in context of sixtieth anniversary of the historical event. It highlights the most common meanings that were linked to the event while focusing on presenting the memory policy of governing party Fidesz. The intention of this thesis is to explore the way how exhibition of museums legitimize the policy of Fidesz. To this end, it utilizes a combination of classical study of literature dealing with said subject and musicological analysis based on five categories that were inspired by Aristotel's approach to drama, where the used sources are two exhibitions that were organized due to the sixtieth anniversary of the historical event. The conclusion of the study is based on the comparison of the exhibitions, rhetoric of speeches delivered by politicians and the theoretical framework described in the opening part of the text.
Appraisal of Edvard Beneš in different interpretations of accepting the Munich Agreement
Oraiqat, Jakub ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Smetana, Vít (referee)
Presented bachelor thesis examines different interpretations of accepting the Munich agreement and their influence on evaluation of the second president of Czechoslovakia Edvard Beneš. He was responsible for the foreign policy of the interwar Czechoslovakia and assumed decisive role in the Munich crisis. Because of these reasons the Munich agreement is mostly associated with the name of Edvard Beneš. Submitting to the Munich agreement is frequently interpreted differently and because of that there are significant differences in evaluation of the political deeds of Edvard Beneš. Reason behind these differences is a question whether should Czechoslovakia defy the Munich agreement and the nation defend itself against the German aggression. The answer to this question determines the method of interpreting the submission to the Munich agreement and also the appraisal of Edvard Beneš. That leads to a schism. From one point of view Edvard Beneš is described as a saviour of the nation but from the other one he is labelled as the one who broke the moral backbone of the same nation. We can find many questionable arguments behind interpretations of the submission to the Munich agreement as a mistake. There is a tendency to compare. But most of the comparisons are not suitable. There are also signs of...

Explaining Prussian victory in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866, an analysis of material and nonmaterial factors
Hába, Tomáš ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Rak, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the causes of Prussian victory in the Austro-Prussian war of 1866. It also builds on the proposition articulated by the British historian Paul Kennedy and others, that material predominance is the most important factor deciding the result of a conflict. However, it is not in an agreement. First of all, this work analyses whether any material imbalance even existed between Prussia, Austria and their respective allies Italy and the majority of the German confederation, by looking at the three most important aspects of it. Firstly, we deal with economic power examined in both absolute numbers and per capita. The primary indicator is gross domestic product but we also look at levels of industrialisation in all the countries involved. Second area of examination is military technology. Namely the quality of infantry, cavalry, artillery and railways. Third is the size of population and armies of the countries involved and their quality. Second part of this work analyses nonmaterial aspects of a state's power. First subject it covers is diplomacy. Second are intangible elements of military power. Specifically, these include strategy, tactics, organization, planning and leadership. Last chapter provides a synthesis of information covered in the preceding two chapters and proves the...

Rázek, Milan ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is an attempt to analyze and objectively assess the attitudes of the Catholic Church led by Pope Pius XII to the question of the Holocaust and Nazism during World War II. To achieve the stated objective, a compilation of historical description will be used as the main method, while the assessment will be based on recognition, characterization and interpretation of the most distinctive differences in the perception of the role of Pius XII during World War II, particularly in relation to Nazism and the Holocaust. Another reason for choosing this topic is an effort to interpret major themes which greatly influenced the development of policies of the Holy See during World War II. In the first chapter there are some important concepts characterized and also the base character of Vatican as a political entity. The second chapter focuses on the person of Pius XII. and his role in the signing of the Reich Concordat. The third chapter monitors the development of the Vatican policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War until its end. The following chapter focuses on the reasons that could have had an impact on the attitude of the Holy See in relation to Nazism and the Holocaust. At the end, the author answers the questions set out in the introductory part of the...
Comparison of the influence of the PISA Study on the german and the czech educational system 2000-2009
Vermachová, Helena ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
This paper aims to compare the results and effects of the PISA study on the Czech and German educational system. The OECD compares with the PISA tests the abilities of the fifteen-year-old to use what they have learned during the compulsory school time in real life situations. Opposite to Czech Republic, Germany was able to improve its results. The undertaken reforms in Germany as well as in Czech Republic aim at similar goals, their results vary, however. The causes of the different outcomes are described by analysing the used instruments of educational policy and the whole political and public reception of the study. Those are illustrated by an overview of the media coverage relating to the PISA Study.
German Left-Wing Terrorism of the 70's and 80's in International Context
Vizi, Štěpán ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Renner, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the international context of the German left terrorism of the 1970s and 80s. Its main goal is to analyse the influence of the international aspects on the activities of the West German terrorist groups in this period. The thesis focuses mainly on the Red Army Faction as the most important representative of the movement in question, however, it also includes other formations that are important from the international point of view: the Revolutionary Cells and the Movement 2 June. The theoretical background of the thesis is provided by the Wave Theory of modern terrorism by David C. Rapoport and the Revised Academic Consensus Definition of Terrorism by Alex Schmid. The international aspects are divided into three sub-chapters: ideology, international cooperation, and strategy and tactics. The thesis deals with international cooperation of German terrorist movements with both state and non-state actors. The research question is based on Rapoport's claim, that unreliable international connections contributed to the failure of the new-left terrorist wave and caused it to fade out sooner. Analysing the influence of international aspects on the activities of German terrorist groups should therefore demonstrate, whether their impact was rather positive or negative and whether...

The Analysis of Media Messages: the 1989 Palach Week
Vacek, Josef ; Šafařík, Petr (advisor) ; Tůma, Oldřich (referee)
The main proposition is that the newspapers which were published by political parties were informing about the events more frequently than other media. This assumption was proved just in part - the newspaper with the biggest number of articles concerning the events was "Rudé právo" published by the communist party, however, the rest of the communist press was lagging behind. One of the findings of this work is that all of the newspapers used media instruments in different proportion. Apart from that, two days of a turning point are identified in all the newspapers in the given period of analysis, both of them were marked with an increase or decrease of the number of articles. The chosen reasearch method is the quantitative analysis supplemented in part by comparison of the results.
