The perception of athletes with a disability, mainly Paralympians, by TV viewers

The dissertation focuses on the research of the audience and the perception of athletes with a disability, mainly Paralympians, in the Czech Television (Česká televize), which regularly broadcasts a program about disabled athletes called Paralympic Magazine. The topic also appears in other news programs (ČT24 and ČT sport). The research aims at showing the media image perception of the disabled sports by the television viewers. The theoretical level emphasises mainly the audience and athletes with a disability. The dissertation posed the following research questions: How do television viewers perceive athletes with a disability? Does the audience admire or regret them? What do viewers say about the presentation of disabled sports? Can we identify any differences between the presentation of athletes with and without a disability? Are life stories of athletes with a disability important in the reports? Does the Paralympic sport make sense? The focus group interviews were set to get an answer to the questions above. This paper aims to present the media image of people with disabilities, which is formed by the main news program of Česká televize and Televize Nova. The main theme of this work was to analyse the media frameworks and stereotypes associated with people with disability. In this work, already well-known media frameworks and stereotypes are categorised and put into context to create a complete media image of people with disabilities. The analysis was done using a qualitative method using open coding.
Transformations of TV viewers'habits in the Czech media market

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to present the current situation in the Czech television market in comparison with previous years. How did the viewership of stations and also the preferences of viewers change with the expansion of the program offer, especially by thematic channels. In the first part of the thesis, the reader will learn a brief history of television, an explanation of the term medium, the definition of the media audience, and the development of stations in the Czech media market. Then the thesis describes the various methods used for research, which are quantitative analysis of data from electronic measurement of television viewing and qualitative analysis using the method Focus groups, or group interviews. The final part analyzes the results that these methods brought - that is, how and whether they changed over time in the viewer's preferences.
Medialization of problematic periods in the life of well-known athletes and their reflection

This diploma thesis called "Medialization of problematic periods in the life of well-known athletes and their reflection on these periods" examines media coverage of selected athletes in the Czech environment with the method of qualitative analysis used on stories from two printed nationwide newspapers and their online versions. The research is supported by e-interviews with the athletes that provide their view on their portrayal. The aim of this thesis is to provide a deeper insight into the issue and to find out how problematic periods of athletes' careers are presented and how these athletes reflect on it. Research showed that throughout their problematic times, the media had been portraying selected athletes in both positive and negative ways, although their image was constantly filled with superlatives reflecting their achievements. Portrayals of problematic periods were congruent across selected media, which athletes themselves confirmed. At the end of the defined periods, or in later time, all selected athletes regained their media status of a hero or even a national hero. The myth of the perfect biathlon team and its end

This thesis focuses on the way in which the media presented the Czech biathlon team over the period of its greatest success, between 2012 and 2018. In this context, it deals with how often the media presented relationships, mood and cooperation in the team as perfect, helping to create the myth of an ideal team. The aim of the thesis is to answer the research question: How was the myth of an ideal biathlon team constructed by the media, biathlonists and the support team? This question is answered through an analysis of biathlon articles published in the years 2012 - 2018 across four Czech sports diaries, namely iSport.cz, sport.cz, sport.aktualne.cz and sport.iDNES.cz. The analysis uses qualitative content analysis extended by linguistic analysis of discourse. The analysis of the individual articles is based on theoretical background, devoted to the media's representation of reality, media logic, myth, heroism, myth in sport and discourse. The results of the analysis describe the way and means by which the actors helped construct the myth of a perfectly functioning biathlon team. The methods used with examples are given at the end of the thesis.
The Evolution of the Media Image of Athletics Championships on Czech News Websites

This thesis reports on an evolution of the media image of major athletics competitions, concretely of the World Athletics Championships and the European Athletics Championships. Using grounded theory methodology, the thesis seeks to examine which topics are used by Czech sports journalists publishing on sport.iDnes.cz, iSport.cz, and Sport.cz news websites. This paper aims to uncover the media's agenda and its eventual gradual changes based on articles dedicated to five chosen championships. The qualitative content analysis covers the period from 2009 to 2018. All the detected topics are divided into categories and subcategories, the findings are exemplified by quotations of relevant journalistic texts. The results of this analysis demonstrate the media image of the athletics. Besides that, the thesis also shows how the Czech online media worked with several sporting events. The final part of this paper includes a comparison of observed championships and a description of categories' development. The findings are also represented in a chart.
Media Image of Grand Prix of the Czech Republic in the Czech Radio in 1930-2019

The diploma thesis deals with the media image of the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic in the Czech Radio in years from 1930 to 2019. The fixture is one of the most important sports events in the country and the public radio has been informing listeners about it since the first year of the Czech GP holding. In its beginnings, the race found its place in the magazine Týdeník Rozhlas, which was also interested in technical background during GP. Based on the preserved articles from the magazine Týdeník Rozhlas, audio recordings from the Czech Radio, and Masaryk Circuit's chronicle, the thesis describes the history of the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic from the public broadcasting perspective. It examines how the radio informs its listeners about the races and how much space it gives to the motorcycle world championship in broadcast. or what topics reporters choose in connection with the races. The quotes from the interviews with a photographer Tomáš Gescheidt, a head of the Czech Radio motorcycle section Luděk Hubáček, and with a track commissioner Jaroslav Pešek are included in the thesis. The methodological part of the research covers the method of qualitative and quantitative content analysis and historical method. The conclusion of this thesis is analytical and presents the results.

The bachelor thesis called Analysis of the work of hosts, commentators, reporters and experts during sports broadcasts in the Czech Republic and the USA focuses on the analysis of the structure, capabilities and quality of specific sports broadcasts in the Czech Republic and the United States. It focuses on the evaluation of broadcasts from the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Czech TV and American FOX Sports and the final matches of the Czech and American top American football competitions on the same stations, the so-called Czech Bowl and the famous Super Bowl. This selection allows several ways to compare individual broadcasts. First, it offers a comparison of the approach of both TV stations to the same sporting event in the form of a World Cup. It also provides an insight into the difference between the size of the largest American football match in the Czech Republic and the famous Super Bowl and their television coverage. It is also interesting to compare broadcasts of different sports on the same TV station, while in the Czech Republic it is the mainstream football and not-so-popular American football, whereas in the USA the situation is exactly the opposite. Progress of broadcasting of breaking news CT24 (2013-2018)

This bachelor thesis The development of breaking news broadcasting on CT24 from 2013 to 2020 defines the basic areas of breaking news broadcasting, which in recent years has occupied an increasingly dominant position in the broadcasting of CT24. Through semi- structured interviews with members of the CT24 newsroom, it provides a behind-the-scenes look at the CT24 special broadcast, characterizes the structure of the special broadcast and stimulates changes in 2013. In the determined interval, the work seeks the development of individual elements, such as the transition from continuous broadcasting to special broadcasting, content and dramaturgy, the role of moderators, the selection of guests or footage of the special broadcasting itself. At the end of the work, he brings a comprehensive view of the development of extraordinary broadcasting on CT24 and outlines its characteristic elements. The main method of material processing was semi-structured interviews and qualitative content analysis.
