The character of a priest in Czech literature of the 19th century
Trdlica, Vilém ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Hošna, Jiří (referee)
The thesis analyzes the prose works of Czech literature of the 19th century, in which a character of a priest appears. The thesis interprets the passages of selected works of K. V. Rais, K. Klostermann, J. Š. Baar, I. Herrmann and B. Němcová. The works of fiction, which elaborate on the psychology of the characters more deeply, are set into rural environment. The priests enter various relationships and conflicts with the parishioners. By that, either a picture of a traditional village is illustrated, or, its profound transformation is depicted. The thesis is also devoted to analyzing the description of mutual relations between priests. For the figure of a priest in Czech literature is typical that he communicates with believers mainly through his office, but that he also expresses his social feeling beyond that. The thesis concludes that, in Czech literature of the 19th century, the priest is generally perceived and depicted as a character with predominantly positive features.

Rhyme and Stanza in Czech Verse, especially in the Poetry of Jan Neruda
Říha, Jakub ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Tureček, Dalibor (referee) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
The present study focuses on the two broad areas of theory and history of Czech verse, rhyme and stanza. The first part of the study is dedicated to the rhyme. It contains a historical and terminological introduction and a comprehensive description and interpretation of principles of rhyme in Czech accentual-syllabic verse (19th century). The characterization of the principles of rhyme in other versification systems (syllabic verse, quantitative verse) and in free verse is allocated in the separate sections. Methodologically, the first part is based on the tradition of Czech structuralism. The second part, dedicated to the stanza, brings a similarly conceived interpretation of stanzaic forms in the Czech syllabic and accentual-syllabic verse. Given the absence of Czech tradition, the second part is methodologically inspired by French metrics. In addition to terminological and methodological apparatus the second part includes an inventory of basic stanzaic forms in the Czech verse and its analysis. A separate section within the second part is devoted to the small group of quantitative stanzas employed in Czech verse. The third part contains three case studies on rhyme and stanzaic forms in the Czech poetry of the second half of the 19th century, with special attention to the poetic work of Jan...

Kumžáková, Karolína ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Činátlová, Blanka (referee)
(in English): This bachelor thesis looks at female characters in early novels of Julius Zeyer. The main theme of the thesis is Šalda's statement that highlights a strong position of women in Zeyer's novel and devides female characters into angels and hellcats. The aim of the thesis is to verify this division in following novels: Ondřej Černyšev, Román o věrném přátelství Amise a Amila and Gompači and Komurasaki. The analysis of novels focuses on differences in artistic interpretation of female and male characters, reflecting the polarity of the woman as angel and the woman as devil, and explores the position of female characters in all their subtleties.

Bartoňová, Barbora ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with various genres which, at the turn of the century, depicted life of the Prague offscourings, i.e. socially excluded and frequently humiliated inhabitants of Prague. The main objective is to give a characteristic of a homeless character, the man on the street, also known as the "Prague vagabond", a character which regularly appears in literature of the period. The thesis discusses several specific Prague vagabonds whom it subsequently compares to the literary type of vagabond (the author used Daniela Hodrová's theoretical findings about the literary type) and shows the impact the city environment has on him. Besides that, the author follows the way the city itself is described as the vagabond of Prague is closely connected with and to a large extent determined by his home city. Primarily, the thesis works with fiction (although a few plays are included as well) and aims to focus on authors of the period who are not widely known today, e.g. R. J. Kronbauer, K. L. Kukla, V. Plaček, F. L. Šmíd, and J. Hais Týnecký. Keywords Prague, Prague offscourings, vagabond, beggar, social issues, literary character, environment

Meixnerová, Karolína ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Králíková, Andrea (referee)
The present thesis aims at describing the genre of literary fairytales. The study is mainly concerned with the 1920', the decade of the upswing of the genre. The classification of Hana Šmahelová and Vera Vařejková was chosen as the default material for the classification of the literary fairytales. The literary fairytale is thus regarded as a special kind of story with fairytale elements. In order to accurately capture the characteristic elements of the literary fairytale, the theoretical part of the thesis was enriched by an interpretation of chosen texts, which substantially influenced the entire development of the genre. Namely, the thesis is based on the comparison of the social fairytale (J. Wolker, M. Majerová), the fairytale carrying the theme of war (R. Medek) and finally, literary fairytales, which are to be found in the three collections Nůše pohádek (1918, 1919, 1920).
