"And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed" An Etnography of a Czech Messianic Jewish Community
Soukupová, Monika ; Spalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (referee)
This thesis deals with some aspects of the religiosity of the members of the Czech community, who claim to be a part of a Messianic Judaism movement. The text is based on the field research I did within the congregation. In the introduction, I attempt to present definitions of this type of religiosity, describe the historical development of the movement, make connection to evangelical religiosity, outline its basic pillars, clarify the role of non-Jewish believers in this movement, and ultimately outline possible forms of worship. Next, I describe my journey into the field, the development of my relationships with the informers and then I evaluate my insider-outsider position in the community. In the practical part of the thesis, I try to reveal the path of individual church members to this type of religiosity, relying on Kaell's concept of "born-again seeking". Based on testimonies from individual believers, I try to uncover why the congregation does not accept more elements of Pentecostal religiosity, as can be seen in many Messianic communities, especially in the United States and England. On the contrary, the church's aims seem to be a counterweight to emotional Pentecostal religiosity. On the phenomena of the celebration of Jewish holidays, the observance of the Sabbath, the relations to the...

Zelený, Jan ; Spalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Bureš, Jiří (referee)
This thesis is concerned in the topic of spiritual searching with Salvia divinorum. Prague and its surroundings have been chosen as the region of interest. Salvia divinorum is extremely potent hallucinogenic substance that can be applied through smoking of extracts or chewing of leaves. Even though prohibited in 2011 In the Czech Republic, the substance is easy to acquire even to this day. In the qualitative part of the research semi-structured interviews were conducted with the users of this plant to obtain information about Salvia divinorum and its relationship to spiritual searching. The analysis of the discourse in the interviews resulted in findings which point us to the conclusion that the experimentation with Salvia divinorum is indeed tightly bound with spiritual searching.
Who Has Bats in the Belfry: A Social Science Study of the Ghost Phenomenon from the Point of View of Castellans
Rybová, Tereza ; Spalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Novotná, Hana (referee)
Author of this bachelor thesis attempts to uncover the phenomenon of castle ghosts from the point of view of castellans (caretakers and managers of castles). The situations that castellans experience have some features of the so-called boundary objects. These objects are typical for their ambiguity and acquiring of different meanings, depending on the point of view taken. In this case, there are two opposite viewpoints. On the one hand, there is the visitors' desire to meet or see a real ghost that is known from books and legends. On the other hand, the experience of people who work and live in castles is totally different - more intimate and inward. The author would like to describe this so far unresearched phenomenon by analysis of thirteen interviews with castellans of Czech castles. Yet this study does not present a plain description of supernatural situations. The author rather attempts to conclude how castellans face these situations. These castellans are considered as very pragmatic and respectable persons who dedicated their lives to care for a historical building. Even in this fact there is a remarkable contradiction. It is apparent that castellans are captivated by the mystical atmosphere of their work places. Still, they are required to be rational persons who need to handle the upkeep...

This fellowship aims at young people in the region of Prievidza, SK, and its goal is to explain them basic Christian values by attractive and comprehensible means. These means are generally called formation. In my thesis, I describe what the formation looks like, I explain the three phases of formation, how the formation is kept up to date and interesting for young people, and also what meaning is given to experience and emotions, since the importance of experience is becoming more and more popular in contemporary Slovak religiosity. My research has shown that the main values of this fellowship are relationship with God, relationship with people and developing personal potential. The main means of formation are common prayer meetings, talking about life in small groups, sermons and weekend renewals. Beside that, the members of Piar meet informally and encourage each other in the values. Formation can be split up in three phases: first is the excitement phase and it allows a new member to become emotionally involved, second is the purification phase which challenges the member and third is the anchor phase - that's when the member finds his life calling. To keep the formation up to...

Discipline without rules? Ethnography of Dialogical Acting with the Inner Partner
Šlédrová, Jasňa ; Stöckelová, Tereza (advisor) ; Spalová, Barbora (referee)
The subject of this diploma thesis is Dialogical acting with the inner partner, which understands itself as psychosomatic introspective and self-developing discipline founded by Ivan Vyskočil. I approach dialogical acting through three conceptualizations of objects - as networks, fluid objects and fire objects. With these I explore different ways in which dialogical acting holds its shape as a discipline. I focus on the creation and continuous re-enactment of dialogical acting and its ambiguous relation to its founder Ivan Vyskočil. I analyze the stability and fluidity of rules that shape and define boundaries of the discipline and describe dialogical acting as a set of relations of changing entities and realities that are present and absent, and as passages that are enacted by the rearrangements of multiple specificities. I try to capture tensions that constitute the discipline. Dialogical acting aims at being an open discipline without rules. As rules re-emerge and tend to stabilize, the discipline develops strategies in the process of transferring knowledge that seek to destabilize the rules. Findings and conclusions of this thesis are based on participative observation of dialogical acting in the courses that take place on The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, on...
