Losses and Findings of Transnational Motherhood

I will also focus my attention on the social practices of transnational motherhood and social conditions of female care migration in the Czech Republic.

Zionist without Zeal: Imagination and Performance of Transnational Belonging

This dissertation based on a fieldwork conducted among Czech Jewish youth during a ten-days educational touristic program Taglit-Birthright explores production of transnational space of mutual belonging. The transnational belonging to Jewish collective is produced through particular physical space of Israel through practice of tourism in collective constructed by the programme as a collective of common origin based on "blood ties". I examine participants' tourist bodily experience, performances, emotions and attitudes as a site of production and reproduction of transnational space using a concept of embodiment as ways in which the individual grasps the world around him/her and makes sense of it in ways that engage both body and mind. Transnational space created throughout the programme becomes socially constructed emotional category of "ahavat Israel", "love for Israel" that might conceal its political implications. Russian speaking students (from Russia and Kazakhstan) in the Czech Republic. Educational migration and the role of the family in it

The PhD thesis "Russian Speaking Students (from Russia and Kazakhstan) in the Czech Republic: Educational Migration and the Role of the Family in it", examines the life of Russian speaking students, who come to the Czech Republic to obtain a university degree. It tries to answer several research questions. How is the decision taken to come to the Czech Republic? What kind of role does family play in the decision-making process and in further intentions/plans in the Czech Republic? What are the migration strategies of Russian speaking students in the Czech Republic? How do these strategies change over time? What connections exist between the life cycle of the student and the migration process? This is an anthropological, multisite field research, with participant observation being the core research method. As of 2015, 55 student research participants participated in the research (41 from Russia and 14 from Kazakhstan), with whom formal and informal interviews were made. Transnationalism and migration system theory have been used as theoretical concepts so as to better understand the student migration process.

Women from a Five star hotel. Reflection of women's experiences who immigrated from Ukraine and work as housekeepers in a luxury hotel

The thesis deals with how migrants from Ukraine construct and experience their migration in a small luxury Prague hotel. The aim of the thesis was to monitor women's social practices and strategies and to shed light on the importance attached to them in each invididual case. The work seeks to show an understanding of a specific type of work in the surroundings of a luxury hotel including its characteristics, structure and working conditions in relation to these women. Further emphasis is placed on the temporality in migration and how it affects women in their various life phases. Using qualitative research methods, namely semi-structured interviews and participat observation, it is believed that the Star Hotel is a very specific place that positively influences the lived experience of women in migration. Women were given an opportunity to answer questions with their own voices and it was found that within specific life trajectories, precarious work in connection with the characteristics of a hotel may seem like a strategic choice. Step-Motherhood in Czech Context

The topic of this diploma thesis is stepmotherhood, specifically its implementation within relationships between women and men who already have a child or children. The basic motive of my work is to identify the construction of several conceptions that are considered natural, given or unchangeable, and which often represent very specific norms, especially dependent on gender. I define stepmotherhood here as a concept that in practice violates many cultural norms and which has the potential to enrich critical discussions about the family, reproduction and motherhood, and parenthood in general. My search is based on information gained through narrative interviews, which complement theoretical discussions representing the constructivist paradigm.

We are all in the same boat: low-threshold facility for homeless women

1 Abstract This diploma thesis aims to describe the practices of the low-threshold center for homeless women "Mezi svými" by which the principles of critical social work are being executed and negotiated in the broader context of "antiradical" Czech social work (Valová and Janebová, 2015) and its discourse "reintegration ". In general, social work is expected to provide its clients with protection against social exclusion or to support their reintegration into society. However, in a situation where employment is considered a key element of integration, social work gets into some difficulties because it cannot create jobs on its own (Castel, 2003). Hence I investigate how peer and social workers find a balance between 1) the ideals of critical social work that organizations subscribe to, and 2) the need to "integrate" women back into the system, activate them, and motivate them to find work. In seeking answers to this question, I pay special attention to the asymmetry of power that characterizes the relationship between social workers and their clients, and I observe the role that peer workers play in sharing power with clients. "When they arrive, it will be too late" Content Analysis of Media Messages Focused on the So-called Migration Crisis and its Gender Dimension

This thesis focuses on the presentation of the so-called migration and refugee crisis of 2015- 2016 in the news coverage published by the main Czech daily newspapers. The thesis is a gender analysis of media messages during that period. In the framework of this thesis, I have analysed through qualitative content analysis written media reports as well as photographs of newly arrived migrants and other visual materials published in the media in order to illustrate migrants in Czech daily newspapers Blesk, Lidove noviny, Mlada fronta Dnes, and Pravo during the month of January 2016. The thesis focuses on how masculinity/femininity is constructed in media messages. Furthermore, the thesis looks into the construction and representation of otherness through media messages dedicated to so-called migration crisis. The aim of the thesis is to critically assess how newly arrived migrants are depicted by the main four Czech dailies, and to analyse and explain the mechanisms through which certain characteristics associated with newly arrived migrants are emphasised or suppressed. "All for one, one for all, but it needs to make sense" Etnography of majorettes sport fans

Baton twirling is a sport industry with a specific fan base. The fan community typically consists of parents and supporting friends of the baton twirling children. Baton twirling represents a significant socializing environment for both children and their enthusiastic parents and friends - fans. The social status and the role of fans within this community are subject to a symbolic capital in the form of experience and knowledge of "how-to-do-it". During the training and competition period, the hierarchy is changing within the group of fans that were monitored, which provides the community members with either a dominant or, alternate, subordinate position. The changing of the "leaders" in the role of the fans' base brings along high emotions and usually also short-term conflicts in social interactions. In other situations, a hierarchy is not created and the group members perceive each other as equal and support each other in the achievement of their common goal. The researcher has been exposed to the environment she describes and to the emotions and tensions existing therein, and she has separated her own personal perceptions, attitudes and biases with the aim to correctly reflect her experience in the research.
