Taking poker as work
Humhej, Jan ; Holeček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Paulíček, Miroslav (referee)
The text discusses a fairly recent phenomenon of professional poker. It analyzes it's social dimension and tries to understand the reasons and consequences of this career choice for the life of the player. For framing the topic certain parts of marxist theory are used primarily. In this context the text analyzes whether professional playing is more correctly viewed as an escape from system of capitalist work or as an integration into the capitalist system. Conclusions come from reflections of economic model of online poker and 8 interviews. These interviews analyze life and opinions of professional players or prominent figures in czech poker community. The interviews focus on the character of the professional's work, his motives for professional playing, the moral dimension, risks of his choice and social consequences for his life. The analysis demonstrates, that many mechanisms typical for other work apply for professional poker as well. Similarly, the personal necessary predispositions for this kind of living don't seem unusual. Tendencies of modern society captured by Marx can be tracked in professional poker as well. As can be tracked tendencies and mechanisms, that are not in focus of Marx theory. The conclusions show, that if we accept certain marxist view of society, professional playing falls under...
Identity formation: An example of classical singing students' community
Bláhová, Vendula ; Čada, Karel (advisor) ; Paulíček, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with the identity formation of the members of a professional subculture. Its aim is to describe the mechanisms that contribute to the creation of a professional subculture and identity and that work within the professional socialization of individuals. The whole thesis is based on an example of a definite professional subculture which is opera singers. This means it relates to the "high" culture which is not explored nearly as much as popular culture. The author relies on the theory of subculture and identity, and on the ethnographic study of an internationally known opera company which has been already conducted. She also conducted her own research in a community of classical singing students who are preparing for careers as opera singers, using participant observation, which was supplemented by a series of semi-structured interviews. The author emphasizes practice, real ongoing interactions, and the meanings that the holders of subcultures attach to the actions around them. The thesis shows that identity is formed by discursive practices, i.e. ascription and reflection, and also through playing social roles. During its formation others play a major role; it is shaped socially. During professionalization the individual is cultivated by surroundings, subculture, and gradually...
Phenomenon camp
Černá, Lucie ; Paulíček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Holeček, Tomáš (referee)
In this work we pay attention especially to the broader introducing of the phenomenon, which is called Camp. We describe here the basic features of the camp, such as excessive efforts to effect, a possession for foiled art and his seriousness, which fails. We discuss the camp view of the surrounding world, with its typical irony, and we refer also to the current form of this phenomenon. We try to show the historical development of the camp, with particular emphasis on modernity, precisely because of his perception that it is based. Space is also devoted to the development, which can be detected in the works of various authors who deal with the theme of Camp. We focus also on specific redefinition of "good" and "bad" art, and not neglecting the relationship between camp and kitsch, as it often leads to erroneous substitution of these two phenomena. Much of the work is dedicated to taste, because camp has become sociologically relevant issue in communion with it. Here we focus mainly on the different view of the taste of "upper class" and the upper class itself. We show the connection of Camp with the theory of American authors Kern and Peterson which refers to the cultural "omnivorousness". At the same time we try to indicate where in the sociological point of view upon taste there is a place for...
The development of art and its attitude to society in work of Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodor Adorno
Váňová, Veronika ; Holeček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Paulíček, Miroslav (referee)
1 Abstract Friedrich Nietzsche's work is interwoven with his idea that all art is formed by two deities, the two elements, Apollonian and Dionysian. Apollonian element, the world of individuation is a beautiful picture and a dream world, Dionysian element, the world unity, is the thunderous roaring tone music. Top art was in the form of Greek tragedy, it was perfect harmony of both elements. The art was at that time, the most perfect from all its parts of development. However, there have been thoughts, uncomprehending beauty of both forces and wanted to destroy them. All aspects of life events have been understood historically, critically, objectively, everything has been secular. Newly created form of the art, which can not be regarded as true art, because it lacks the elements of art, was called attic comedy. Contemporary culture is based on ideas that belong among others to Socrates and so it is called Socratic. Culture has the opportunity to recover and help the rebirth of true art, just listen Dionysus singing, which is already awake and must be just detected and informed. Theodor Adorno speaks about the mass society, which, through monopoly controls all that happens in it. The society is doing exactly what monopoly wants. Society is material, without imagination, the ability to experience, ability to...
The construction of classical music
Paulíček, Miroslav ; Petrusek, Miloslav (advisor) ; Duffková, Jana (referee)
The music is changing in the last decades - slowly but so far without any precedent. Its character is still less estetic but still more social. So many music styles do not differ from each other in the music itself, as in their environment, their universe. Theese styles look like socially constructed networks, from the constructivistic point of view. This text aims particularly at the music generally called classical, because its construction is simply the best of all music constructions. I do not want to show the classical music as something imaginary, constructed just in minds of individuals. I intend to describe its real existence, which consists of institutions, people and also non-humans. This paper is inspired by the Bruno Latour's sociology of science and by the actor-network theory that regards non-humans and aswell allows to watch the constructing of network as something still again built and changable, not as stable constructions. Through the description of actors that hold the construction of classical music together this text explains not only what the classical music actually is, but also answer questions like how became possible that there is so little distance between classical music and jazz, or why and how media use it.
Artistic success defined by the students and teachers of art schools
Pincová, Zdeňka ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Paulíček, Miroslav (referee)
Bachelor thesis Artistic success defined by the students and teachers of art schools is about the concept of success in the imagination of young artists and their teachers. They try to look for success through professional identity, which is still evolving. The first section briefly summarizes some views on identity formation and role in society (Goffman, Berger and Luckmann) and presents a theory of symbolic interactionism as the concept of work. Symbolic interactionism is based on mutual shaping attitudes and the exchange of important symbols, which produce an adequate response. The analysis examines the process of formation of professional identity based on life stages and art stages of students and teachers in dance study and visual arts. For this uses the theoretical background of experience and research of other authors. At the end focuses on the success and its aspects. In conclusion summarize the views and defines the differences between them.
