Orel, Ivan ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (referee)
My thesis "Contemporary Czech Polemic Discourse Shown on Controversy over Milan Kundera" deals with media debate triggered by an article published in the Respekt magazine. The article claimed that Milan Kundera reported an unknown person dwelling at a student dormitory to the police. The person was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment as a Western intelligence agent. He spent 14 years in prison. The thesis focuses on texts that were published in Czech media from 13 October 2008 to 31 October 2008. Source texts were categorized into three corpuses. Corpus A includes texts that bring information on Milan Kundera - these texts are not explicitly oriented at supporting argumentation either in favour of or against Kundera. Corpus B contains texts defending Kundera. And corpus C analyzes texts that respond critically to corpus B texts. Based on results of such analyses, discourse participants were categorized and their types were defined, assessing phenomena appearing during the discourse and properties of selected texts of the discourse contained in corpuses A, B and C that were subject to qualitative assessment.

Samšuková, Eva ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Rigorous thesis "Principles of popularization of scientific knowledge on the Czech and American news servers" evaluates and compares news published during three month period in scientific sections of news servers in the Czech Republic and the United States of America. The thesis follows room provided for scientific topics, the audiovisual features and theme agenda on NYTimes.com, USAToday.com, iDnes.cz and Novinky.cz. The results are accomplished through the quantitative content analysis which is supplemented by the qualitative semiotic analysis. The semiotic analysis determins compositional and narrative structures and the language features in the articles. It is very important to be concerned about the scientific journalism, as science is important in people's lives and, furthermore, it is the public who helps to support scientific efforts financially. Thus, scientists should be concerned about and aware of science communication in media.

Jelínková, Barbora ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Šoltys, Otakar (referee)
The diploma thesis presents own research method for examination of speech formations. It focuses on examination of televised political debates. The method applied here may be characterized as an organized hermeneutic analysis of political discourse. Through the application of an analytical - philosophical approach (e.g. application of the theory of maxima, illocutionary acts evaluation, and analysis of arguments and verification of their truthfulness), the method allows us to establish objective facts of the debate as well as some personal features of debate participants. To examine texts, the theoretical knowledge of distinguished authors (J. J. Austin, K. Bayer, T. A. van Dijk, N. Fairclough, H. P. Grice, J. Habermas, J. Kraus, G. N. Leeche, J. R. Searl, and others) have been made use of. In addition to the literary survey, the thesis also includes the argumentation in respect of selection of the method, selection of talk shows, transcript of debates from TV records, transformation of the text into an analysable form, and research methodology. Accordingly, a specific communication model of programme is drawn up, the talk show discourse is analysed as a whole, and the styles and argumentation of selected participants are examined and analysed, which is followed by a comprehensive assessment of the...

Elfmarková, Šárka ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
As there is no world outside media, we have no choice to avoid receiving, consuming and interpreting contents which are media giving us. This inescapable situation leads us to study media and its new trends. The special field of current interest in media communication is an interest on "the new media". The interdisciplinary point of view on media enables to study very complex problems of topical cultural change from the verbal to the visual communication. The language as a dynamic code is under still current evolution and is the result of negotiation of its users. It is constructed from the signs which play important role in constitution of the meaning. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Dufek, Ondřej ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Moravec, Václav (referee)
Diploma thesis Politeness in Television Political Discussion deals with specific nature of politeness and impoliteness use in mediated political discourse, illustrating it with the Czech Television programme Questions of Václav Moravec. In the first part it defines television political debate as a genre. Then it summarizes development of politeness theories both in world and Czech pragmatic and pragmalinguistic tradition. After synthetising the main conceptions it comes out with its own version of theory of politeness and impoliteness, basing it on Cooperation Principle and politeness theory with utilization of face concept. Then it applies theoretical principles in practical debate analysis and pays attention to the most distinct agents of politeness and impoliteness expression. In conclusion it identifies characteristic regularities of politeness and impoliteness usage in television political discussion and adverts to relevant factors that influence the shape of communication. The diploma thesis helps to map this little explored field, in which conflict interferes with cooperation as two antagonistic forces, and explains their interaction by the usage of politeness and impoliteness.
