Formation of witness testimonies collected at CVH Malach

In the last few decades there has been an expansion of institutions of direct democracy in most developed countries. The Czech Republic has been no exception and over the past 25 years, there has been a rise of direct democracy in the Czech Republic. The aim of the dissertation is an analysis of the use of direct democracy in the Czech Republic. Although the analyses are based mainly on data from the Czech Republic, the aim is also to contribute to scholarly debates in the field of direct democracy research. I focus on the following questions: Who supports the use of direct democracy and who participates in it in the Czech Republic? How do voters form opinions and what are the characteristics of direct democracy campaigns? What is the effect of direct democracy on other forms of political participation? I view direct democracy as an institutional innovation and evaluate it based on three criterions: inclusiveness, competence and efficiency. First, I focus on who supports the expansion of direct democracy. I also study the patterns of turnout of various social groups in direct democracy (inclusiveness). Second, I analyse the processes of opinion formation in direct democracy campaigns to find out, whether it can be regarded as competent or not. Last, I analyse whether direct democracy leads to increased or...

Kabele, Jiří ; Trojan, Václav (advisor) ; Kitzberger, Jindřich (referee)
The subject of this thesis are the models of the school-leaving exams changing over time due to the educational policy of the state and sometimes tumultuous political developments. The theoretical part contains historical analysis of the graduation exam and its models, creating the basis for the empirical part. Based on the study of legislation and rules governing conditions and holding the graduation exams and further study of the relevant literature, on a precise description of the current model and indicating the current efforts to modify the existing model of the graduation exam the vivid picture of this phenomenon in the whole range of educational issues is created. The attention is also paid to the issue of holding the graduation exam. The leaving examination since its inception in our country in 1849 has been defined by the law, its implementation has been modified the closer decrees. It has always been a significant "politicians", not only purely "educational theme." Changes in model of the school-leaving examination always reflect the changes in the system of our educational policy. Strašilová, Eva ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Čepelák, Václav (referee)
The topic of my thesis is the annual fairs in the Czech Republic with the primary focus on the tradesmen of the traditional craft goods. The thesis is divided in two parts - theoretical and analytical. In the first part, I concentrate on the characteristics of the annual fairs in connection to the research that has been already done on this topic and then I describe a brief historical context of the annual fair.Subsequently, I explicate the methodology of my research. In the research I opted for the method of analysis of documents, the semi- structured interview with the tradesmen of the traditional craft goods and the informal interview. I analyzed 12 websites of annual markets and managed to interview 13 respondents. The second part of my thesis concentrates on the analysis of the respondents' interviews and to the analysis of documents. On the basis of the data analysis I characterized the annual markets based on their traditions, holding period, the availability of the Internet and type organizer. The next section is devoted to the characteristics of the annual fair from the perspective of sellers. I investigated how markets choose how to learn about them, what is the communication between sellers and organizers, who the competition is, the importance of the family and when is the season for...
Discourse Rules Connected to Dying: How People Talk About Death of Close Ones
Exnerová, Dominika ; Grygar, Jakub (advisor) ; Kabele, Jiří (referee)
The thesis aims with discourse rules of dying of a close person. Author works with other theories, especially with Gorer's pornography of death and also comparisons of current situation and history of Ariés and Elias, who considered the current representations of death to be more a taboo than in the past. The practical base of the text is a research combining both in-depth interviews with young people and interpretations of closed groups, such as support group and internet discussion. The analysis identified two approaches in young people's families, focusing either on practical aspects of dying of a relative or on emotional aspects. These two approaches were in opposition against each other especially while both being present in a single family. Also, several conditions changing discourse rules were identified. The death of a young person or by suicide were more tabuized than death of an elder person. Generally, the research shows that people's view on death is not constructed by media as Gorer proposed, since young adult people have their own experience from their families. In this text, death is considered to be a taboo of the society because of strict boundaries of what is appropriate and inaproppriate. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Changes of Corporate Social Responsibility
Knížová, Kristýna ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Kuchař, Pavel (referee)
In 1953, Howard R. Bowen gave rise to the debate on social responsibility, and since then it has become very widespread. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility gained a lot of forms during the second half of the twentieth century and from the university campuses got into practice and also into the Czech Republic. On the background of changing theoretical approaches toward CSR we can see changes of business environment - especially in the change of the conceptualization of the enterprise - from shareholder perspective to stakeholder perspective. Stakeholder theory extensively influenced the approach to CSR. Based on the thematic analysis and interviews with the actors, I identified two main practiced approaches towards CSR. Some actors understand the corporate social responsibility on the background of moral values, on the contrary, other understand this concept on the background of economic interests of the company. Firms can be responsible from both reasons on the basis of external pressures. But, some companies "play a game on social responsibility" and society does not perceive it positively. This negative experience can be transferred to other companies with "CSR label". However, many researches have repeatedly shown that citizens expect from the companies involvement in social issues...
Cycling advocates: reinventing politics in the era of late modernity
Fiala, Šimon ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Kotík, Michal (referee)
Cycling advocacy has taken a form of a popular worldwide social movement in the beginning of the 21st century. Cyclists demand not only improved conditions for cycling, but also a reform in the way the city is being run in order to be "livable" and saturated with "quality public spaces". This dissertation attempts to put the phenomenon in the context of the theory of risk society and it attempts to incorporate impulses from the theoretical tradition of ANT. The cycling controversy is being read as a re-invention of politics in urban arenas. What is political about the bicycle? More than it may seem. The bicycle has endured a long trajectory of political appropriation by various groups in order to arrive at a point where it began to be conceived as the default starting point of the critique of automobility and Western modernity. As a consequence the bicycle emerges as a loaded political symbol that is being appropriated by cycling advocates in order to problematize the alienated city colonized by cars, appropriated by business interests and neglected by the political representation. The bicycle is being reinvented as a symbol of urban revolution. This dissertation introduces the results of an empirical research undertaken between June 2013 and April 2015 that maps the shape of the cycling controversy in...
