Early Modern narrative Sources from Czech Towns
Tošnerová, Marie ; Bláhová, Marie (advisor)
Early Modern Narrative Sources from Czech Towns The aim of the PhD thesis is to collect information about preserved narrative sources relating to Czech towns from the pre-White Mountain period and attempt to classify and put them into historical context by means of analysis and comparison. The creation of various historiographical documents bears witness to the considerable popularity of history during the 16th and 17th century. The thesis is mainly focused on chronicles, preserved mostly as manuscripts, dealing with the past of Czech towns. The research touches on personal memoir records of particular burghers tangentially. The reason is that most of them only refer to their families. Facts about other historiographical sources of literary character were studied only if they were related to the town, where the other source of pre-White Mountain period exists. The subject of the study was 24 towns` chronicles of the pre-White Mountain Period. The sources were analysed in detail and compared to other sources from the same period, like official or non-official sources from the Czech territory and abroad (mainly German area). Attention was focused on these documents from a historical sciences standpoint with an emphasis on origination and reception of sources, on their authors and socio-cultural environment,...
Amenities in Czech collegiate chapters in the mid-14th century (on the example of Stará Boleslav, Litoměřice and Vyšehrad)
Picture of the Holy Land in Adomnán's De locis sanctis
Falátková, Michaela ; Kubín, Petr (advisor) ; Nechutová, Jana (referee) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee)
The presented thesis deals with the work On the Holy Places (De locis sanctis) compiled by the monk and abbot Adomnán of Iona (624-704). Adomnán's work provides evidence of the unknown Gallic pilgrim Arculf about his journey to the Holy Land. Furthermore, Adomnán's text represents a complex historical source about the character of the early medieval pilgrimage during the second half of the 7th Century. Moreover, On the Holy Places offers extensive description and topography of the holy places associated with Jesus Christ's life, passion, and resurrection, hence oscillates between itinerary and hagiography. From the perspective of literary history, Adomnán's narrative has a deep-rooted background within the tradition, nevertheless, provides a significant number of innovations beyond the traditional views. The thesis contextualised Adomnán's text within the 7th-Century Iro-Scottish literary production, i.e. introduces Adomnán's new concept of pilgrimage narrative. Moreover, the text presents the first translation of On the Holy Places from Latin into Czech along with extensive commentary. The historical-critical method of Classic and Medieval studies, together with synchronous and diachronic analysis, was used. The detailed commentary contextualised Adomnán's work within the archaeological excavations...
The position of a woman in the late medieval city and its reflection in the Legal Book of the City of Brno
Humlová, Eliška ; Bláhová, Marie (advisor) ; Pátková, Hana (referee)
The main purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to describe the position and life of women first more generally in the Middle Ages and then especially in the late Medieval city, mainly in Brno. Alternatively, there might be a little overlap in some parts into the early modern period. The basic source is the Legal Book of the City of Brno, especially its three-volume edition published in 1990-1993. First of all is described the source including its origin and its edition, afterwards theory of women and her life ensues and following parts are already the examples from the Legal Book which concern women. At the beginning the thesis deals with laws, regulations and opportunities for women, then the specific cases follow, in which women appeared in various positions. The work tries to find out which rights and powers in the late medieval city women had - whether they could act in different positions in court, or whether they had a guardian or their spouses acted for them. How the woman was treated in court, their appearance before municipal institutions, how the right of heritage applied to them, disposition of property, women's wills, rights to children, relationship to children (whether the administration of children's property was performed by a woman or guardian/lawyer), the status of widowed woman,...

The notions about the origins of nations in 14th and 15th century historical culture.
Bažant, Vojtěch ; Nejedlý, Martin (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee) ; Kalous, Antonín (referee)
Vojtěch Bažant, The notions about the origins of nations in 14th and 15th century historical culture, Ph.D. thesis, Institute of Czech History, Faculty of Arts, Charles University, Prague 2020 The thesis offers an analysis of narrative structures in medieval historiography about Czech and Hungarian history, more specifically in historiography either created or read and rewritten in the 14th and the 15th century. The research is focused on a variety of narratives of the origins of nations, i.e. on stories retelling the Confusion of Tongues, the search for land and the building of a homeland, the establishment of a new society and, finally, the Christianisation of the tribe or people. Individual medieval historical works are treated as literary narratives, not as sources to be exploited for a reconstruction of historical events or of the context in which the chronicles in question were created. In this scope, the thesis examines individual narrative motifs as well as the entirety of the narrative; motifs are interpreted in their relation to the whole narrative while the chronicles and histories are approached as both meaningful stories and stylized narrations of these. The discourses on Czech and Hungarian histories are not construed in developmental terms; individual historical texts are rather...
The lords of the coat of arms of green rose on silver field. On the origin, genealogy, seals nad residences of the Lords of Krumlov
Gersdorfová, Zlata ; Pátková, Hana (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee) ; Velímský, Tomáš (referee)
The dissertation presented is an attempt at a complex processing of history of one of the family branches of the Vítkovci, Lords of Krumlov (ante 1213-1340). The introductory sections are devoted to a summary of existing literature and research, with an excursion into the legendistic tradition of the Vítkovci clan. This is followed by a third chapter dealing with the genealogy of the clan, which has been carried out with an emphasis on sources. Thus, the difference between preserved sources and historical constructs became evident (this difference was distinct primarily in the figure of Záviš of Falkenštejn). The genealogy of the clan was studied by Vítek of Prčice across the known and assumed members of the clan of all five generations up to the final male member Ješek, the son of Záviš of Falkenštejn. The fourth chapter describes the properties and wealth of the Lords of Krumlov on both the Bohemian and Austrian sides of the border. One section of the chapter is devoted to the mining of precious metals, thanks to which the Vítkovci gained their wealth and a significantly independent position. This is followed by a section on residences, which provides interesting information thanks to an interdisciplinary approach combining the results of archival, historical, construction-historical, and...

The History of the Coat - of - Arms of Dohalský of Dohalice
Maličký, Pavel ; Bláhová, Marie (advisor) ; Županič, Jan (referee)
The aim of this work is to draw attention to the amount of unsatisfactorily answered questions up to this day connected with the use of the aristocratic seal and particularly the sealing-stick. An example of the analysis of a small set of sphragistic and heraldic monuments of the Bořek-Dohalský aristocratic family from Dohalice confi rms the presumed fact of mine that the generally accepted rules of heraldry and sphragistics are often dissociated to that extent that their true meaning is to be observed. It seems that social and family ties often more aff ect the written drawing-ups (lending of sealing-sticks) than strict interpretation of the law. The work suggests that similar development can be expected in other families, and at the same time it warns us that the presence of diplomatic anomalies can signifi cantly shift our view of written drawing-ups from the very existence of the seal to its end. The results of this work are therefore a challenge to deeper syntheses on a similar topic. Keywords: sphragistics, nobility, aristocratic seal, sealing-stick, coat of arms, emblem, Bořek-Dohalský from Dohalice
