The bachelor's thesis "Ronald Reagan and the Rise of the New Christian Right" deals with the role of religion in American politics during Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s. The emergence of the religious right movement is explained as a response to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and the 1970s and as part of the so-called Culture War. The Comparison between Health Care Reform of W. Clinton and Health Care Reform of B. Obama
Čermáková, Zuzana ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
Bachelor thesis The Comparison between Health Care Reform of W. Clinton and Health Care Reform of B. Obama deals with the health care system of the United States of America. The aim is to explore the mechanisms for securing affordable health coverage of the reform proposals of the last two Democratic presidents of the USA, The National Health Security Act and The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Despite a lapse of more than fifteen years the goals of proposals were the same. Both presidents called for reducing the federal deficit and the number of uninsured Americans. Analysis of the bills shows there are many similarities in the mechanisms for ensuring health insurance. Even if President Obama adopted a more conservative approach than President Clinton, both reform proposals were based on the system of managed competition and on the state intervention.
Guantánamo: Between Security and Human Rights Guantánamo Bay Prison in US Public Discourse During George W. Bush Administration
Květová, Lenka ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Raška, Francis (referee)
The thesis examines the discussion about American prison for suspected terrorists at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The author argues that the position taken by Bush Administration in its dealings with detainees in the early years was step by step denied by a series of the Supreme Court's rulings. Thus the Administration had to find partial resolutions and ways around that led to a demand to close Guantánamo prison. The author concludes that the main reason for Guantánamo prison to remain open was a question of unresolved future fate of detainees.
Applying the Reagan doctrine in Afghanistan During the Soviet Occupation
Šimčíková, Klára ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Litera, Bohuslav (referee)
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979 ended the period of détente between the USSR and the US. In this new phase of escalation of the Cold War, Ronald Reagan's administration applied a new foreign policy strategy in the Third World. This new strategy, known as the Reagan Doctrine, included increased assistance to anticommunist insurgencies against client regimes of the USSR. This thesis examines the application of the Reagan Doctrine in Afghanistan. Using this country as a case in point, it attempts to find out to what extent the Reagan Doctrine was a coherent strategy or whether there were any inconsistencies in its application. Also, it seeks to find out how successful the Reagan Doctrine was in Afghanistan with regards to forcing the Soviet troops to withdraw. It also shows the long-term consequences for the USSR, the United States and Afghanistan itself.
Beijing as a responsible stakeholder: the role of the PRC in the international system of the 21st century according to the USA
Hornát, Jan ; Bečka, Jan (advisor) ; Sehnálková, Jana (referee)
In a speech in 2005 Robert Zoellick called on China to become a "responsible stakeholder" in the international system. This notion soon became an official American concept widely used in US-China relations. Washington urges Beijing to become a responsible country, which sustains and enhances the international system. Zoellick's concept encourages the engagement of China and bilateral cooperation between China and the US/Western world. Beijing accepts the concept as an important part of US-China relations; on the other hand Chinese leaders seem hesitant and cautious regarding certain aspects of Zoellick's idea of "responsible stakeholder". This paper will first define the American concept and compare it with Chinese political concepts; in the second part, it will concentrate on the various examples of the practical application of the concept. A case-study dealing with China's role in the Six Party Talks (where the US considers China to be a "responsible stakeholder") will demonstrate the duplicity of Chinese behavior and show that China in most cases prefers to follow its own "vital" interests rather than acting as a "responsible stakeholder".
