News sources and their journalists : the issue of diversity resources in the context of the sociology of news
Křížová, Vendula ; Trunečková, Ludmila (referee) ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor)
The thesis "News sources and their journalists. The issue of diversity resources in the context of the sociology of news" summarizes the current knowledge and understanding of sociology of news and sources and adds a bio-anthropological look at the strength and stability of relationships between the sources and journalists. These concepts will be then applied in quantitative research affecting the characteristics of sources cited in three selected Czech daily (Hospodářské noviny, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo). The survey of similar scope has not yet been generated in the Czech Republic. Research results follow the theoretical concepts and empirical researches and agree with them that the journalists in their daily routine work regularly turn to the "elite group of resources" for quotations. These sources are also quoted more often than other sources. However, there is so many people in the group of information resources spread around the editorial offices of newspapers, that it is almost impossible to talk about lack of diversity of resources. Research also confirmed that different types of media don't differ at all from each other in the basic parameters and are turning to the same types of resources regularly and with the same frequency.

Špirko, Michal ; Trampota, Tomáš (referee) ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor)
The thesis "Distorted map of the world according to daily newspapers MF Dnes and SME" deals with the ways in which the most widely read newspaper in the Czech and Slovak Republic inform about world matters. Foreign news in surveyed newspapers MF Dnes and SME are examined by using a quantitative content analysis which particularly asks "how" and "why" some states pay great attention and others are ignored. The question of "how" is developed in the methodological section. This part establishes procedures by which knowledge can be achieved, and identifies factors that may be crucial for assessing the unequal attention to the individual states. The question of "why" refers to the theoretical part, which outlines the findings of media studies on the construction of media reality, as well as the characteristic features of media organizations and the creation of news content. Attention is also focused on the description of the contexts between analyzed media organizations and resources issues. The aim of the whole work is then to compose several distorted maps of the world by selected criteria, which reflect the world view as presented through the content of examined journals.
Focused on Africa : the Czech news coverage
Bahounková, Petra ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee) ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor)
My dissertation "Focused on Africa: the Czech TV news coverage" tries to describe how the Czech TV news programs reflect the African events. Contents of the current international news coverage are influenced by many factors: the application of news values, impact of globalization processes, the countries' position in the global state hierarchy as well as the contextual factors of the mentioned countries. As early as 1922, Walter Lippmann said that the news media are windows into a wide world lying beyond our immediate experience. These particular windows define our cognitive world map. His words still apply - even almost a hundred years later. News media help their recipients to make their own view of places they do not know personally. Africa has traditionally been perceived as a continent stigmatized by famine, AIDS, civil wars, humanitarian crises or economic problems. That's why I'm trying to capture the way in which Czech TV news programs inform about African events - which topics they prefer and which African countries they are focusing on in their news programs. I'm trying to find an answer whether Czech news media contribute to the above mentioned perceiving of the African continent.

Development of access of women as news sources into the news of the Czech Television
Janeček, Petr ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis "Development of acess of women as news sources into the news of the Czech Television" deals with access of women into the news programme Udalosti in 1993, 2001 and 2009 in the context of sociology of sources. In the literature, we can find evidence that men dominate television news because they represent one fifth of all news sources and moreover women are more often presented in connection with less important issues and in passive roles. TV news therefore supports stereotypical reception of women in society. It is valid not only for the Czech mass media but also for the whole world. The aim of the thesis was to capture development of access of women during the years. We assumed that frequency of female sources would be higher in 2009 than 1993 and 2001 because we can also see more women in politics and business. We also observed average length of the talks to understand how much space both women and men get in news coverage. The thesis tried to find out contexts in which women and men appeared (e.g. politics, economy, business, entertainment, family etc.) and roles that they held. Furthermore, we focused on position within news coverage and tried to capture whether female sources get a prominent position which indicates capacity and power.
