Georg Trakl's Poetry in Czech Translations

Tereza Jůzová's thesis Georg Trakl's Poetry in Czech Translations tries to discover which specific expression this Austrian poet takes in three Czech versions created by Bohuslav Reynek (1917, 1924), Ludvík Kundera (1965) and Radek Malý (2005) - three translators belonging to three different generations. The first chapter is devoted to Trakl and his work, ranked in the social and literary context. The second chapter presents the translators and their achievements, summarizes the period reception, and gives a brief overview of the poet's influence on original Czech literature. The focus of the thesis is the third chapter - translation analysis of six selected poems transposed to Czech. It is theoretically based on the translation shifts theory of Anton Popovič and on the method of translation analysis developed by Jiří Levý. It turns out that each of the original translators handled the original in their own way and accentuated different aspects of Trakl's work. Reynek colours the words by kind and gentle expression and his translation is the most peculiar. Kundera and Malý approached Trakl's plain style, Kundera, however, does not hesitate to underline some poetic passages. A commented translation: Robots that enjoy discovering

The aim of the submitted bachelor's thesis is to translate the article Roboter mit Entdeckerlust by Ralf Der and Nihat Ay and to comment the translation. The commentary is divided into four parts. The first part is a translation analysis based on the model of Christiane Nord. The next part focuses on a description of the used translation methods. The third part consists of a typology of translation problems, that occured in the translation process, and examples of their solutions. The commentary is concluded by a typology of translation shifts.

CAT Tools in German - Czech Translation

Abstract This thesis handles special translation software, the mastery of which is becoming one of the basic requirements of successful translation work. The theoretical part describes the historical development, classification and main functions of translation memory systems. The thesis will further attempt to determine the criteria for the effective use of CAT tools and explore the text types and sorts for which the translation memory systems are most commonly used in the translation process. The functional view of the language-based text typology and the principles on which the translation memory systems work will also be handled. The practical part compares the result of a translation process (translation as a product) with and without CAT tools. The corpus of parallel texts (original translation) will be subjected to a translation analysis. This analysis concludes the levels which are affected by differences between translations made with and without CAT tools. The differences in the actual translation process with and without CAT tools which are not empirically verifiable will be analysed based on a survey conducted amongst translators. Graduates of the Institute of Translation Studies and their opportunities on the Labour Market

The thesis focuses on the position of graduates of the master's programme in translation and interpreting at the Institute of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague (formerly Department of Translation and Interpreting at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University; University of 17 November) on the labour market. It follows up on the survey of employment possibilities of graduates of these institutions which was carried out in 1997 (Čeňková). The theoretical part of the thesis addresses graduate placement from the viewpoint of education policy and of translation studies. This part also provides a description of language industry trends and problems of the translation and interpreting market, with particular emphasis on the Czech environment. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire survey among graduates in the field of translation and interpreting from 1967 to 2010. Rilke's Novel Die Aufzeichungen des Malte Laurids Brigge in Czech Translations

The diploma thesis deals with two translations of Rilke's novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge. Each translation is not only conceived as a final product, but also as a communication process, influenced by a number of cultural and socio-political factors. The thesis therefore attempts to capture changes in Rilke's reception in relation to the literary paradigm and - with regards to the political situation - to the contemporary publisher policy, because during the period of socialism Rilke's work, which was highly valued in the thirties, came back into general awareness quite slowly in connection with the gradual liberation of cultural and political situation. The goal of the thesis is to map the problems of the translations' genesis with regards to the period and cultural environment and to the translators' poetic style. Part of the thesis addresses a translatological analysis, which is the base for defining both of the translators' methods.

The bachelor thesis comprises two main parts: the translation and its theoretical reflection. The first part contains a translation of Thomas Ahbe's sociological studyfrom Germaninto Czech. The study deals with Ostalgie, a phenomena relatively little-known in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part of the thesis, translation analysis based on Cristiane Nord's model is carried out, followed by the setting of the translation method and the description of the translation problems and shifts. The conclusion sums up, primarily, the intercultural aspect of the translation.

Synthesis and propersties of organo-silicate binders for titania nanoparticulate layers

This diploma thesis deals with the synthesis of an organosilica polymer which could be used as a binder for titanium dioxide photocatalytic layers. The main reason for incorporating the binder into the photocatalytic layers is not only the improving of the mechanical properties, but above all, the binder could help with production of low-temperature photocatalytic layers, that could be applied to heat-sensitive materials such as plastic materials. This could create layers on flexible materials that could be easily made into any shape. The work focuses on the synthesis of organosilica polymer from the organosilica precursor and subsequent characterization of the binder. Surface tension, viscosity, density, XRD, thermal analysis of silica binder solutions was performed. Titanium dioxide compositions with this binder were prepared, then they were printed and the layers were treated with UV and plasma. Treated layers were examined by FT-IR and a voltamperometric characterization was performed.

This Bachelor thesis is divided into a translation of an original text and a professional commentary on the translation. The translated text is an article "Am Abgrund" (On the edge of a precipice) from a special issue of the German weekly DER SPIEGEL - Geschichte called "Kalter Krieg" (Cold war). The text itself depicts chronologically historical landmarks during the cold war and it is added with political quotes of that time and modern analyses and hypotheses by historians. As the name of the article suggests, the main thought of the article are moments when the mankind was caught on the edge of a precipice of a nuclear war. The professional commentary deals with four spheres, namely translation analysis, tranlsation methods, typology of translation problems and exprassional shifts in translation. The goal of the commentary is to acquaint readers with translatological procedures and methods,to reflect problematic passages in the text and, on the basis of theoretical knowledge, to reach a feasible solution of translation.
