Gender stereotypes in the chosen fairy tales by Božena Němcová and Karel Jaromír Erben
Belisová, Eva ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Matonoha, Jan (referee)
I'm engaging in gender stereotypes in selected fairy tales by Božena Němcová and Karel Jaromír Erben in my dissertation. There is a gender discourse incorporated in their fairy tales, which serves as the basis for assumption of gender roles and fairy tales are becoming significant factor by gender socialization. Using feminist literary analysis I analyzed chosen fairy tales by author and authoress and classified characters from the gender perspective. I was focusing more thoroughly on four typologicaly different fairy tales (two by Němcová, two by Erben) and I was trying to demonstrate different conception and representation of femininity in them. I was investigating, which gender stereotypes are submitted to children, what kind of material is in that way submitted them to construct their gender identity and to accept gender role and whether fairy tales reproduce patriarchal gender order. Although in sporadic cases some characters exceed conventional gender roles, issues which resulted from my analysis showed, that fairy tales mostly reproduce gender inequality of patriarchal society and represent characters in gender stereotyped way.
"The Perfect Baby"- Experience of Risk During Pregnancy
Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Kolářová, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis presents data gained from qualitative research that took place in Czech Republic in 2007. Based on in-depth interviews with women who experienced health complications during their pregnancy or whose pregnancies were classified as high-risk it analyses how the discourse of risk influences their subjective experience of pregnancy and how it affects the ways they talk about their motherhood and how they experience it. In the theoretical part of this thesis I highlight the approaches that conceptualize risk as a phenomenon that is socially constructed and mediated. I stress the relationship between the notion of risk and the way pregnancy has been constituted in the medical discourse. In the next part I focus on pregnancy as an embodied experience that is at the same time closely embedded in the gender relations and notions about women's bodies and their reproductive role. The second part of this thesis is based on data gained from the narrative interviews. The first chapter outlines the role that prenatal testing played in the narratives of my informants and analyzes the relationship between prenatal testing and the construction of authoritative medical knowledge as well as women's reasons for refusing the testing. The next chapter outlines ways the presence of risk influence women's...
Democracy and "Identity": a Study of Relations on the Example of African-American Civil Rights Movement.
Chvátal, Jiří ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Kotábová, Věra (referee)
The text concentrates on two important phenomenons of contemporary world: "democracy" and "identity". Its two main questions are: (I) Is the development of "open identities" desirable in "democratic states"? (II) What kind of conditions is favorable to this development? Answering to these questions is divided into two parts: theoretical inquiry and practical investigation of the Civil Rights Movement. The theoretical part focuses on the notions of "universalism" and "project of identity". It argues that we should be cautious when we encounter with the claims of universality because they may serve as a cloak of exclusion and legitimize political actions. "Projects of identity" are visions which ascribe certain characteristics to categories of people and try to represent and/or activate them; they are connected not only with excluded but with excluders as well and we may judge them according to specific criterias that are presented in the text. The practical section deals with the african-american Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and the 1960s and studies concrete "projects of identity" as they were articulated by African Americans. Firstly it is concerned with the nature of their exclusion, secondly it pays attention to three représentants of given era (Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Stokely...
Gender audit of local policy
