International magazines and journals (National Geographic and Reader's Digest) launched at the Czech market: transfer strategies and processes

This study has aimed at describing the strategies and processes that apply during the introduction of international magazines to the Czech market. We have chosen the well-known and widely read, truly international magazines National Geographic and Reader's Digest as our material. We have focused on the role of these magazines in the interaction of cultures (Czech and American). We have realized that this area of translatological knowledge has not yet been analysed thoroughly enough. There are only a few studies, only one of them concerning one of these magazines (Reader's Digest). This study (Robyns 1994) suggests that Reader's Digest disseminates (American) ideology and at the same time constructs a certain homogeneous world. We have intended to find out if this was true about Reader's Digest and also National Geographic in the Czech Republic. We have chosen basically two theoretical sources. One of them was "the Manipulation School" which states that: "Translation is […] a rewriting of an original text. […] Rewriting is manipulation, undertaken in service of power." Lefevere (1992: vii). Comparison of two Czech translations of Rousseou's "Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire"

The dissertation aims at comparing the two existing translations of Jean-Jacques Rousseau' s Les Reveries du promeneur solitaire - translation by Karel Šafář in the edition of 1962 and that by Eva Berková of 2002. The theoretical part looks at historical context within which the translations were created and briefly compares the first edition of 1913 with the edition issued in 1962. The comparison itself opens with a thorough analysis of means of expression which verbalize feelings the author experienced on his walks and offer a doser look at his state of mind at the point when he was writing his work. The analysis served as a basis for comparison of excerpts taken from both translations, the emphasis being laid on accuracy in translation, particularly that of key words, translation of figurative expressions and important semantic fields, degree of closeness to the sentence structures and grammatical categories of the original as well as on delivery of the rhythm and euphonic means, omissions, and cases whereby the meaning shifted. Czech translations of Lorca's Gypsy ballads

There is no doubt that Federico García Lorca is one of the most famous Spanish poets and dramatists in the world. There are some factors which contribute to his fame: his personality, character of his poetry and dramas and violent death on the crest of his creative wave in 1936. This thesis deals with his collection Gypsy Ballads (Romancero gitano) and compares three different Czech translations. The collection was first published in 1928 and it is considered the best of Lorca's work. He transformed the original form of folk Spanish ballads and enriched it with completely new and original elements. This thesis includes a chapter dedicated to the poet's life and work. It also presents comprehensive characteristics of the book of poetry itself with description of its contents, language and form, with the emphasis on the translatological aspects of the transfer of Spanish assonance verse into Czech. The basis of this study consists of translatological analysis of the first selection from Gypsy Ballads by Ilja Barta (1937), first full Czech publication by František Nechvátal and first full Czech publication with assonances by Lumír Čivrný (1956). Contexts of/in translativity

Jiří Levý's and Anton Popovič's theories of (literary) translation and their theoretical and methodological undepinnings (Czech and Slovak structuralisms) as well as their conception of a full-fledged discipline are critically revised on the background of present-day western Translation Studies (TS), now facing sociological and ideological turns, critique and new challenges, as well as on the background of their traditions. And vice versa. However, the focus is on translativity, Levý's category and Popovič's norm, unknown in western TS; the category was studied on translation of advertisements into Czech (a longitudinal study spanning 1990-2005). Possibilities of innovation are suggested in terms of TS theory and methodology, e.g. integration of psychology ot marketing studies) since the role of the receiver has been neglected and eficiency of transaltion has generally been only hypothetized. The task of studying new translation phenomena (e.g. fanslation, localization of iternational magazines, institutional quality standardization) should not be underestimated and presents not only another challenge, but aslo new methodological possibilities on the way to TS modernization. Julio-Cesar Santoyo and his contribution to the development of translation studies

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the contribution of Julio-César Santoyo, a contemporary Spanish theoretician, to the development of translation studies. We have provided an overall summary of his work together with an overview of its reception. The analysis of individual works and theoretical knowledge is preceded by an overview of theoretical concepts applied in the 20th century Spain, which serves as an outline of the context and environment which influences this theoretician. We have focused on all three aspects of his work, i.e. theory, criticism and history of translation. Our task was to provide a complete insight into his thinking within these disciplines. Our analysis is based not only on his book publications but also on numerous specialized articles which he has been continuously publishing throughout his entire academic career. Within the translation theory field we have focused on particular issues Santoyo deals with in his works, mainly on defining the meaning, purpose and position of translation in miscellaneous areas of human knowledge and on topics closely linked with translation. Valentín García Yebra and his contribution to translation studies

The purpose of the paper "Valentín García Yebra and his Contribution to Translation Studies" is to provide an overall analysis of García Yebra's works and their reception in Spanish press and magazines specialized on translation. Part of the paper is dedicated to the summary of García Yebra's predecessors on this field, to his biography and his career as a professional translator. But the major emphasis rests upon the analysis of his thoughts on theory, critique and history of translation. As a part of the analysis, we provide a summary of all the books in question. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the most important areas of García Yebra's thoughts and to synthesize them into thematic units. The most significant areas contain the definition of translation and some general ideas on the role and possibility of translation. Next, we deal with the types of translation, the two-phase process of translation and the factors affecting it. We also study the function of linguistics in García Yebra's approach to translation. The following sections deal with the investigator's approach to dynamic equivalence, with the role of translation in enriching a language and with the education of translators, which was one of his life's missions. Existential Characters of Selected Works of Prose Written by Vladimír Körner

The diploma work deals with the analysis and interpretation of selected works written by Vladimír Körner - it means the works of prose called Splinters in the Grass, The Valley of Bees and The Angel of Mercy. Not only the plot, but especially the characters of these proses meet the criteria set on existential characters. Körner's work includes a common theme which is noticeable in all his works of prose - it is a warning about the horrors of war and fanatism, which fundamentally and often irrefutably change the lives of everybody. The diploma work attempts to prove that Vladimír Körner's work has the hallmarks of literary existential stream. However, due to the fact that themes mostly related to the Czech history are used, it is considered to be an example of pseudo historical prose with existential characters. Therefore, it is not historical prose in the true sense of the word because the characters belong to existential literary stream as evident from their qualities (uniqueness, loneliness, looking for the meaning of life, the sense of responsibility for one's behaviour).

Figures of speech in translation contemporary Venezuelan press

Diplomová práce se dělí na dvě části. První část se teoreticky věnuje metafoře a metonymii v české a španělské terminologii, definici populismu, specifickému jazyku politiků a v neposlední řadě způsobům překladu rétorických figur z češtiny do španělštiny. Druhá se na základě analýzy srovnatelného vzorku venezuelských a českých publicistických textu zaměřuje na srovnání typů a frekvence rétorických figur s důrazem na jejich funkci v populisticky orientovaných textech. Jako referenčních textů bylo využito španělské přednášky El Libertador Simon Bolívar y su papel en la revolución emancipadora de la América Espaňola (1930) a jeho českého překladu, druhým textem je časopis 8 Estrellas vydávaný Velvyslanectvím Venezuelské republiky v ČR. V rámci výzkumu byly použity statistické metody jako modus, medián, aritmetický průměr nebo průměrná odchylka (relativní a absolutní).

Expression of interpropositional relationships in the translation of bilateral international treaties

This extended essay deals with the theme of expression of interpropositional relationships in the translation of bilateral international treaties. In the theoreticalempirical part we characterize generally the functional law style and then we define its features both in the Czech and in the Spanish languages. We offer a short synopsis of its different genres covered by this functional style. We study the question of legal translation and distinguish its two fundamental types - the instrumentally and the documentary translation. We present the genre of bilateral international treaty. By summarizing the information contained in the specialized literature and the translation analysis we determine its dominant features both in the Czech and in the Spanish languages (with the exception of the area of interpropositional relationships which will be dealt by detail 113 in the empirical part of our essay). The area of the interpropositional relationships follows by defining them as the object of our research. The empirical part is elaborated by the method of a qualitative research.
