Associations between red colour of hair and other morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits
Musil, Martin ; Flegr, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Fiala, Vojtěch (referee)
Hair and skin colour are one of the most visible external features that can be encountered in humans. Red hair colour is the least common colour. It is associated with fair skin, which is prone to ultraviolet radiation. This is captured by eumelanin, which is less common in redheads because they have more pheomelanin pigment. Because of this, red-haired people are in a higher risk of developing malignant melanoma. This risk is further increased by more freckles and nevi on the skin. The major gene behind red hair is MC1R. This gene forms a receptor that binds hormones that regulate pigment production. Red-haired people have a gene allele that is demonstrated by partial or complete loss of MC1R receptor function. According to some studies, red hair also affects how red-haired people feel pain and whether they need more anaesthetics to induce general anaesthesia. The practical part of this work consists of a survey which topics are covered in published studies that mention red hairs in their title or abstract. The survey was conducted on three search engine Web of science, Google scholar and PubMed. All databases contained the most articles that linked red hairs as a risk for malignant melanoma. Key words: redhair, phenotype, human, eumelanin, pheomelanin, pigmentation, melanoma
Dielectric Elastomers
Fiala, Vojtěch ; Špinka, Jiří (referee) ; Starý, Jiří (advisor)
The thesis contains extensive theoretical information and consist of several parts, where in the first part of the text are specified mainly general knowledges about electroactive polymers (EAP) and their different types. In this part, the reader should get a basic view of the issues and realize sense of these materials. The following text is more specifically addressed on one group of electrical EAPs called dielectric elastomers (DE). Introduction to DE is conceived comprehensively, that means from general information and principles of function to specific and deeper information. For example in the text are included information about individual materials and differences between them, particular application areas, etc. Above all, the text focuses on the fields of sensorics and energy generation.
Facial attractiveness and its correlates in cross-culture perspective
Fiala, Vojtěch ; Kleisner, Karel (advisor) ; Tureček, Petr (referee)
Past studies, that studied facial attractiveness, focus mainly on fluctuating asymmetry, averageness, masculinity, femininity, and skin coloration influences on attractiveness assessment. Their findings have been used by intercultural studies. They have revealed that people from diverse areas prefer differential development of sexually dimorphic cues, according to, e.g. local health and economic situation. We have done an online questionnaire survey. We included Czech (N = 100), Iranian (N = 87) and Turkish (N = 185) facial stimuli and raters of both sexes. We have studied whether members of all the populations would utilize the facial colouration and sexual dimorphism cues in a similar way. We have also tested whether there were differences in the facial width to height ratio (fWHR) between the sexes in all the populations. We have also wondered if the populations differed in the variance of facial skin colouration. Raters from all the populations saw feminine women as attractive. Turks and Czechs found masculine men as attractive, while Iranian women found more average Iranian men as attractive. Averageness positively predicted the attractiveness of the Czech and Turkish faces of both sexes. Older and more average Czech men were considered more masculine by Czech women. More average and younger Czech...

Fiala, Vojtěch ; Janoušek, Oto (referee) ; Čmiel, Vratislav (advisor)
This bachelor thesis summarizes the knowledge of the medical and technical field related to the project. In the medical section, there are mainly described areas of kinesiology and medicine related to the causes and risk factors leading to problems and diseases of the spine. In addition to the description of the disease, there are also presented the diagnostic solutions and treatment. The content of the medical part of the thesis is also a look at some commercially available products dealing also with postural problems. Part of the technical part is acquaintance with the Arduino platform and the components that are included in the practical part of the bachelor thesis. In the technical part, the area of motion sensors such as accelerometers, IMU sensors and gyroscopes are also described in more detail. Especially there is described IMU MPU-6050, which is used in this project. Further, the thesis describes the procedure in the practical part of the project, including the design of the positioning of the sensors with the positions in which the data are measured, as well as the design of the assembly and its optimization. Subsequently, the final appearance of the device, including the method of attachment on the body, and the measurement results are shown. Results are later commented and discussed. The final part of the thesis is the final summary of the results achieved and the reflections on the possibilities of further work or further adjustments and modifications of the existing equipment.
Cross-cultural perception of attractiveness and its correlates: the role of visual modalities
Fiala, Vojtěch ; Kleisner, Karel (advisor) ; Třebický, Vít (referee)
This work reviews the literature on the topic of intercultural perception of human attractiveness with special focus on recent videostimuli-using research. The first section introduces several basic perspectives on ecological-evolutionary view of attractiveness. The next section deals with intercultural differences in attractiveness perception dicussing possible explanations of these differences. The third chapter focuses on faces of people of cross-culture origin and usage of composite stimuli and artificially manipulated stimuli in inter-cultural research. The fourth chapter examines the usage of videostimuli in attractiveness research. I also add information about intercultural usage of videostimuli as far as these are available. Finally, I discuss a possible source of result ambiguity and highlight the potential use of videostimuli in intercultural research of attractiveness perception. Keywords Attractiveness, intercultural perception, videostimuli, cross-culture origin, composite images, averageness, masculinity, feminity
The Dutch disease theory and its application to countries with independent monetary policy and members of monetary union
Fiala, Vojtěch ; Šíma, Ondřej (advisor) ; Dvořák, Michal (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to give a comprehensive picture of a phenomenon called The Dutch Disease whose symptoms had been increasing in many countries during the second half of the 20th century, especially in connection with mining. The first part deals with the detailed description of traditional economic theory and its later upgrades. In the second part, the Dutch Disease theory is applied to the member countries of the European Monetary Union and highlights the problems of asymmetric shocks, which may include among others the discovery of mineral resources. The third part then attempts to look at the recent European balance of payments crisis through the eyes of the Dutch Disease theory and to highlight a number of common symptoms.
