Folk As a Social Phenomenon in the Time of So Called Normalization
Houda, Přemysl ; Vaněk, Miroslav (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee) ; Valeš, Lukáš (referee)
Summary: The thesis "Folk As a Social Phenomenon in the Time of So Called Normalization" does not take folk primarily for a music style but it intends to demonstrate its limits the Communist power in Czechoslovakia had set for independent cultural activities in 1970s and 1980s. That is why the thesis is not a musicological one but a political and historic one. The text is based on a wide basis of sources: studies in archives, the analysis of valid legislation of that time, studies of contemporary press, interviewing the contemporary witnesses and using the witnesses' private archives and last but not least the lyrics of the songs themselves have been selected as important sources The text focuses on important milestones having the information value about the folk in 1970s and 1980s. There is provided an analysis of qualification tests which should have "cleansed" the official stages from "defective" musicians (and from a lot of folk singers as well). The demonstration of possibilities is given here showing the fact the folk could survive and balance on the edge of the public life in spite of all legislation barriers and this either in the form of circumventing the law and using the gaps in the law (folk singers' union Šafrán (Saffron)) or in the form of "hacking" the system, i.e. gaining influence in an...

Zdařilová, Eva ; Červenka, Jan (advisor) ; Mücke, Pavel (referee)
This paper deals with an analysis of biographical interviews with Roma survivors of Nazi persecution. The emphasis is put on different elements that may affect narrated life histories. It views memories from the initial remembering to their new contextualization throughout the life; it draws the attention to the narrative tradition of respondent's background as well as the final narration and its specific circumstances. The analysis is framed with the Czech compensation programs for victims of war injustice. The text points out to different perspectives of history adopted by state authorities on one side and those applying on "compensation" on the other. The paper also discusses mutual misunderstanding of different perspectives of the past, of an administrator/ historian and of an eye-witness.
Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping in memory of Czechoslovak sailors (1959-1989)
Krátká, Lenka ; Mücke, Pavel (advisor) ; Vaněk, Miroslav (referee)
The main target of the work is to extend our current knowledge concerning history of the Czechoslovak Ocean Shipping company during the period from the company's founding in 1959 until year 1989. The main basis for this task fulfillment there are interviews with former Czechoslovak sailors realized with help of the oral history method. Beside this, the paper is supported also by archive materials. The text reflects certain specificity of the topic (maritime business running in the inland country, in addition country ruled by non-democratic regime) and it aims to the company's history; but its main part is concentrated on the sailors' living conditions. It processes direct testimonies about sailors' life and work on Czechoslovak ships; there are included topics as travelling, emigration, direct experience with communist regime on ships, private life of sailors, and their father and husband role. The author does not propose definite conclusions; her effort is aimed to see the topic from various points of view. Sailors are not portrayed as exceptional people but as men whose meaning of life was work on the sea. And this fact principally influenced their lives as well as lives of their families.

The Prague military history club and its role in researching the pre-world war II Czechosovakian fortifications during the communist rule and afterwards
Pečená, Dana ; Mücke, Pavel (advisor) ; Urbášek, Pavel (referee)
The objection of my study was to determine the amount of involvement of professional historians and amateurs in researching the Czechoslovakia pre-world war fortifications between 1948 and 1989 and afterwards. (the members of the Prague military history club) The conditions for research and publishing have been different through the years. For ideological reasons could professional historians not be interested in the fortifications before 1989. It would have been considered as reminding the public of the so - called First Republic (1918 - 1939) and glorifying its military. In 1970's the fortifications became an object of interest for certain enthusiasts who then formed the Prague military history club (PMHC). This club was able to publish materials about the fortifications only after 1989. Research in the official military archives had been limited until then, but in 1980's it was becoming easier. During the socialist era there have been certain individuals who became interested in the fortifications because of their profession and they were gathering information about them. Those individuals have had influence on the PMHC members. Even before 1989 there were fortification museums (for example in Dobrošov) and some fortifications had been declared cultural herritage sites. The PMHC role in...
