Media image of the Black lives matter movement in the Czech Republic
Kardová, Viktorie ; Mazák, Jaromír (advisor) ; Skovajsa, Marek (referee)
(in English) This thesis deals with the media image of a Black lives matter movement in selected Czech online media. The theoretical part of the thesis first introduces theories of media effects, then the space is devoted to social movements and specifically the context, requirements and goals of the movement Black lives matter. A separate chapter is also devoted to the media representation of social movements and its effects. Several studies from the American environment are presented, which dealt with the media image of the Black Lives Matter movement in American periodicals and examined, among other things, the presence of the protest paradigm. The aim of this work is to map, with the help of discursive analysis of frameworks, what the media image of this movement looked like in the Czech Republic. Four online news servers were selected for the analysis, falling into four categories set by the Endowment Fund for Independent Journalism, which reflect the credibility of the server; Aktuálně,cz (A), Novinky.cz (B+), Parlamentnílisty.cz (B-) a Sputniknews.com (C). The central question of this work is: "What interpretive frameworks were used by the selected media to inform about the Black Lives Matter movement and its activities?", Which is further divided into individual subquestions: "Are there any...
Ethnic dimension of readers' reactions to information about violence in a media report - replication study
Pisani, Gabriel ; Mazák, Jaromír (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
The work is a partial replication of the American study "Race, Crime, and Emotions" by C. Burge and G. Johnson (2018). The object of interest of the work is the impact of ethnicity within the exposure of intergroup or intragroup threat on the individual's emotional response and punitive tendencies. It is examined using an experimental questionnaire with several versions of a fictional article about a murder. This work aims to determine whether the replicated study is limited by the specific social context for which it was designed, or whether the research design can also be applied to another intergroup conflict, both theoretically and practically. This work is divided into the theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part examines whether the hypotheses set out in the original study can also be applied in the Czech context. The practical part is a replication of the research of the original study. The experimental questionnaire was completed by 131 respondents living in the Czech Republic. The sample also includes respondents of Roma origin. In this work, I come to the conclusion that the original research can be used in the Czech environment.
Small family business issues in the region of Přibram
Rosinská, Elisabeta ; Mudd, Dana (advisor) ; Mazák, Jaromír (referee)
The dissertation deals with the issue of a family entrepreneurship. Family businesses play a key role in GDP production and employment in our country and worldwide, which makes them the backbone of the economy. However, they were overlooked as a topic for studying and research for a long time. Lately a number of authors started to look into them and even in the Czech Republic they were brought to attention. Two distinct systems mix in these businesses, each one oriented towards different goals. Family business's practices are therefore influenced by the meshing of a family system and a business system, which sets them apart from other types of entrepreneurships. This theses is focused on specifics of small family business in the Příbramsko region. A suitable concept for explaining a specific behavior of family businesses seems to be a so called socio-emotional wealth. One of the goals of this thesis is to evaluate the importance of individual components of the socio-emotional wealth with the help of semi- structured interviews. Small family businesses are mostly viewed in a positive way and relationships, trust, a personalized approach, a good reputation, happiness of all personnel involved and quality of products and services provided are vital for them. A big administrative load and acquiring...
The relation between parents' education and the vote intention of Czech high school students
Novotný, Ondřej ; Linek, Lukáš (advisor) ; Mazák, Jaromír (referee)
(in English): This bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis of the relation between parental education and the intention to vote of Czech secondary school students - whether the relation exists, what affects this relation and how this relation can be explained. The synthesis of the literature shows that the positive effect of parents' education on the intention to vote has already been demonstrated in Czech minors (Kudrnáč, 2018), internationally in minors (Kim and Lim, 2018) and Finnish young adults (Gidengil, Wass & Valaste, 2016). Based on the literature we summarize four possible explanations of the relationship: 1.) more educated parents participate more often in elections themselves and represent a role model for their offspring, which offsprings observe and acquire through social learning, 2.) more educated parents provide their offspring with a politically stimulating home environment, which provides them to political values and stimulates their vote intentions, 3.) more educated parents lead their offspring to their higher education (in the context of secondary school students, this approach can be represented by the type of school) and so the offspring acquire a number of skills and values leading to voter turnout, 4.) education represents socioeconomic status or family standard of...
Unconditional basic income - new utopia/dystopia of modernity
Vlasova, Olga ; Mazák, Jaromír (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
There is an ample amount of proposed solutions for the global challenges of our time. In this context, unconditional basic income is discussed as one possible solution. This bachelor thesis addresses the question of how this concept is reflected and presented specifically in Czech media and public discourse. Using data from a content analysis of the Czech media and a survey on a representative sample of the Czech population, it creates a map that displays the specifics of each discourse and shows the points of their contact. Results indicate that the high share of arguments about UBI which are frequently discussed in the Czech media finds a way to the public discourse, although some dissimilarities occur. In general, the topic itself seems to be peripheral in both discourses as in most of the analyzed articles it is briefly mentioned in the context of another topic, and the majority of the Czech population has never heard about the UBI concept. Among those who report contact with the topic in the Czech media, the meeting happened on the Internet or on TV. In addition, Czech society is sharply divided in its attitudes toward implementing UBI in the Czech context. Half of the population shows strong or moderate support for the concept, whilst another half is against its introduction. KEYWORDS...
Menstrual stigma in advertising of menstrual products
Poncarová, Petra ; Dudová, Radka (advisor) ; Mazák, Jaromír (referee)
(in English): This thesis deals with menstrual stigma in advertising of menstrual products. First, the theoretical basis for stigma associated with menstruation is presented and then several articles are described that dealt with the analysis of advertisements for menstrual products. With the use of exploration method, the thesis tries to capture the phenomenon of menstrual-related stigma, where the main question is: "How do advertisements advertise different types of menstrual products and how do they work with menstrual stigma?" It is further divided into individual sub-questions, which are: "Can any differences in work with stigma be identified for different types of products, especially in the comparison of traditional and alternative menstrual products?", "In what ways is stigma used, maintained or abolished in advertising?" and "Are these ways of work related to the type of product and the target audience?" With the help of theory, certain categories were established, according to which the advertisements were subsequently analysed. Further categories were discovered in the analysis of advertising itself, with the proviso that they relate to the menstrual stigma, the analysis of which is the main goal of this work. The qualitative analysis of the advertisements showed that most of the...
Eco-labelling and consumer behaviour
Petty, Silvia ; Richter, Eva (advisor) ; Mazák, Jaromír (referee)
Human impact on the environment has significant social causes as well as effects. A change in consumer behavior in all respects is therefore necessary to protect the environment. The issue of consumption reduction is therefore becoming increasingly important in the context of climate change in recent years. Consumer lifestyle also involves the consumption of textile products - clothing in a conventional manner, the so-called fast fashion, which also contributes to increasing the environment related burden and negative impacts on human health. The so-called slow, ethically and sustainably produced fashion allows to reduce this burden. Consumers' willingness to buy organically produced and eco-certified products is important to reduce environmental burdens and therefore the understanding of consumer behavior that leads to their purchase is important. Through qualitative in-depth interviews this thesis identifies the motivators and barriers to purchasing eco-certified fashion and other textile products and brings a deeper understanding of these motivators and barriers. These motivators include the certificate itself, good feeling, pursuit of environmentally friendly behavior, health aspects, trend. As barriers, this thesis further recognizes the lack of knowledge about eco-certified fashion, negative...
Unconditional basic income as a solution to unemployment
Hron, Matouš ; Mazák, Jaromír (advisor) ; Vlček, Josef (referee)
In this bachelor thesis I seek an answer to a question whether universal basic income can serve as a solution to mass unemployment. I use theories that explain the causes of reduced well-being of the unemployed. According to restricted agency model, the reduced well-being can be explained by material deprivation. Latent deprivation model seeks the answer in non-material needs that are not fulfilled in unemployment. In the first part of the thesis, I make use of empirical studies of unemployment, whereas in the second part I seek the answer by analyzing European Social Survey data from Czech Republic using multiple linear regression method. In case of evidence supporting the restricted agency model, universal basic income might be a viable solution to unemployment. The results show mixed evidence for both models.

Civil Society and its Agency in the Political Process
Mazák, Jaromír ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Skovajsa, Marek (referee) ; Frič, Pavol (referee)
(EN) Civil society is made up of committed individuals, non-governmental non-profit organizations, their employees, volunteers, and other supporters, as well as relations among these actors. Civil society activities include community development, advancement of leisure and professional interests, services to vulnerable groups, as well as efforts to intervene in the political process and to support certain legislation and systemic change. This work focuses on the latter, i.e. the ways how civil society actors influence the political process. In the introductory chapter I present an overview of the current research of civil society and political activism in the Czech Republic and other post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In this chapter, I identify five central propositions that can be formulated on the basis of existing scientific discussion and I subject them to a critical assessment. In addition, I argue that against the backdrop of the discussion, two streams of literature can be distinguished which differ in their assessment of civil society's quality in Central and Eastern Europe. I try to clarify the reasons for these contradictions. In the second chapter I offer an overview of social movements theories, thus completing the theoretical basis for the empirical part of this...
