Literary Reportage with a Focus on the Theme of the Loss of Loved Ones in Selected Works

This diploma thesis is devoted to selected literary reportages focusing on the theme of the loss of a loved one. The genre which does not properly belong to either fiction or non-fiction has been growing in popularity in recent years, yet it is still a vague term for many. The thesis approaches the phenomenon of literary reportage, characterizes it and presents its main features. It also focuses on the history of Polish reportage as well as the current state of the Polish school of reportage in connection with the authors of selected works. Subsequently, it also provides a theoretical basis for the loss of a loved one using professional publications. In the second part of the thesis, the focus is on an interpretation of selected works - Ganbare! Workshops on Dying (2016, translated in 2017) by Katarzyna Boni, Like Eating a Stone (2002, translated in 2017) by Wojciech Tochman and Two Sisters (2016, translated in 2018) by Åsne Seierstad concentrating on the concept of loss of loved ones, and finally the thesis is devoted to a mutual comparison of three reportages to demonstrate the way of writing about the loss of a beloved person.
Comparison of poster processing in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Japan - 60s and the present

The thesis deals with the topic of film posters, both contemporary and those from the 1960's. The theoretical part is divided according to individual countries into chapters about Czech posters, Polish posters and Japanese posters of the 1960's and the present day, and discusses the historical development and representatives of poster creation of the given period and country. The analytical part observes the number of occurrences of articles about posters in both selected time periods in all three countries in chosen media as well as monitors the content of these articles.
Critical and reader response to the diversity in young adult literature

This bachelor's thesis deals with the critical and reader response to sexual and racial diversity in young adult (YA) literature. First of all, It tries to define the terms YA literature, diversity and review. It describes the specifics of this literary category and its readers, together with a description of the dystopia and fantasy genres. It also focuses on the diverse representation of race and sexuality in adolescent literature. Subsequently, it analyzes the diversity of the books Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Six Crows by Leigh Bardugh, including their Czech and foreign media coverage. The publications are first described in terms of plot, then the characters and their environment are examined from the point of diversity, and finally reader and critical comments on the topic of representation of selected diversities are taken into account. In this thesis the Czech media scene is represented by the readers website databazeknih.cz, the literary magazines Pevnost and XB-1, as well as the website iDNES.cz. The reader website Goodreads and the literary sections of The New York Times, Publishers Weekly and KIRKUS magazines represent the foreign reviews. Journalists on Twitter: do they follow traditional norms or new standards?

The thesis aims to examine the way the Czech journalists use the social network Twitter. The thesis concentreates on the difference between the traditional norms under which journalists behave, the roles they play, and how they use Twitter. Firstly, the tweets where divided into the categories based on what kind of tweet it was. The thesis analysed the tweets one by one in the quantitative part, it concentrated on its content, used language and other special characters which could be photos, videos, emojis and other. The thesis showed that the journalists on Twitter behave differently than professional norms sets and that their roles differ. They become gatewatchers instead of gatekeepers and the journalists tend to comment on the topics. They also become the promoters of their work.
Media reception of Michel Houellebecq's work in Czech media

The thesis presents an analysis of the critical response to Michel Houellebecq's books Elementary Particles (1998), Platform (2001), Submission (2015). In the theoretical part, the concepts of literary criticism and review are defined and the development of Czech literary criticism is described. The next chapter traces the life of Michel Houellebecq, in terms of the personal and professional experiences that shape his authorial pose. In the practical part, a quantitative analysis of published mentions of the books under study is made. Those mentions that are reviews or critiques are then qualitatively analyzed. The range of media studied includes the mainstream media, which normally write about literature in their literary columns, as well as specifically targeted magazines. The range of media studied includes a variety of periodicity and media format. The time period is always set from the first mention of each book examined and ends in August 2021.
Positive Psychology as a Theoretical Foundation for Constructive Journalism

This diploma thesis tries to provide a theoretical basis and explanation of the interdisciplinary connection between positive psychology and constructive journalism. Constructive journalism involves the application of the tools of positive psychology in order to increase the quality of media content by creating engaging and productive news and journalism. The aim of this work is to verify the theory and methods of positive psychology and constructive journalism through research, which exposes respondents to two articles formulated in both negative (catastrophic) and positive (constructive) frames. The purpose is to find out to what extent framing affects emotions, motivation, attitude or preference and whether constructive journalism is really the right way to raise the level of journalism as such.

Diploma thesis Closely Watched Trains: from the short story Kain to the short story, from short story to Oscar film and theatrical adaptations maps the path of Bohumil Hrabal's existential short story Kain, through the short story Closely Watched Trains, an Oscar film of the same name to theatrical adaptations that were dramatized by different people. The work also includes media response and comparison of the similarity of books, films and productions. The first part deals with the theoretical definition of literary genres, namely short stories and short stories. Review and criticism from the journalistic genres are theoretically described. The film and theater adaptation is defined and the dramatic structure of the film work is described. The second part presents the life and work of the writer Bohumil Hrabal and examines in more detail his distinctive writing style. The next sections are always devoted to the specific medium that the text carries. First, the text of the existential short story Kain is analyzed, followed by the short story Closely Watched Trains, including media coverage in the periodical press, followed by the Oscar-winning film Closely Watched Trains, which includes a biography of director Jiří Menzel and a chapter devoted to the Oscars. Polish literary reportage in the second half of the twentieth century: Hanna Krall, Ryszard Kapuscinski

The thesis addresses Polish literary reportage from the second half of the twentieth century as well as specifics of this genre related to the same period. It also observes the change of the reportage's role during the period of real socialism. Following as it gradually leafed off its position as a source of propaganda and became a tool that opened many taboo topics. The thesis is also about approximating the personalities of journalists Hanna Krallová, and Ryszard Kapuśczyński, both of whom had a significant impact on the topics concerning this thesis. It analyses two books of their reportages along with two other reportages written by them and informs current readers about specifics of the reporting in socialist Poland. The second part of the thesis is the original reportage called Právo na život tu každý chápe po svém, which was written in the period from October 2020 to February 2021 in Warsaw, Poland.
The media representation of the Stalinist Czechoslovakia in press commentaries related to the case of Milan Kundera

This thesis deals with the media reflection of the totalitarian past in the Czech press, namely the reflection of the first phase of development of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia (1948-1953). As a model example used the controversy in the autumn of 2008 on Milan Kundera's denunciation. That unleashed Respekt, coming up with information that later gave a famous writer in the 1950 Western Courier of Czech origin.
