Zmudová, Žaneta ; MĚŘIČKA, Jan (advisor) ; GRYGAR, Štěpán (referee)
In my thesis I focused on the topic of the night in the Czech fine arts from the 19th to the 21st century. The aim of my work is not conduct a survey of the issues as a whole, it does not make efforts to be a historical outline, but the goal is to present a different conception of the night in the works of some selected artists. This text is concentrating on the works of artists who design the night in the landscape and urban sceneries. In every night scene we can see the light, either natural or artificial, which is the bearer of artist´s imaginings. The work goes from the introduction of the light and darkness symbolism throughout the era of the human history and physical essence of the light to the presentations of individual artists who reflect the night with natural kinds of light or the artificial ones.
Poválečná japonská fotografie
Tryputen, Stanislav ; SILVERIO, Robert (advisor) ; GRYGAR, Štěpán (referee)
Japonská fotografie po druhé světové válce prošla radikální proměnou od fotorealistického přístupu, zaměřeného na zkoumání národní identity země, k více subjektivnímu přístupu nové generace fotografů zasažených hrůzami války. Tito autoři vyvinuli nový vizuální jazyk a témata jejich tvorby měla velmi osobní povahu. Cílem této práce je analyzovat hlavní vlivy tohoto vývoje v historickém a sociálním kontextu poválečného Japonska.
Photography - medium of light and time or medium of contemporary art?
Stecker, David ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Grygar, Štěpán (referee) ; Šimlová, Štěpánka (referee)
Is there anything like specific values of photography which come from its basic substance of this medium? If yes, can be these values applied in today´s world of art or must photography give them up to defend its own position in this changable and competitive milieu and must photography look for other values and work with such of those which do not come from its substance? And is it even perspective to look for something archaic as ontology of particuliar media? Maybe yes.

The theses discuss the issue of photographing a specific place which is closely related to the spaces of all kinds and to architecture. It is limited to the so called ?no name architecture? that does not have a known author ? mainly common houses and utility buildings but also specific places in the countryside or in a city such as gardens or parking lots. The emphasis is on the connection between the space and its photographic representation. It is demonstrated in the work of particular authors. It explores the questions of making a photographic picture of a space, author´s choice and their influence on the result as well as the impression the particular photographs leave in their viewers. Self-Portrait and its Forms in Works of Famous Photographers and in Works of Younger Generation in the Czech and Slovak Republic
Bričová, Katarína ; Grygar, Štěpán (advisor) ; Silverio, Robert (referee)
My graduation thesis shows reflections on the phenomenon of the self ? portrait. I am particularly interested in the answer to the question why most artists have been attracted by the self ? portrait. At the beginning of my thesis I follow examples of the self ? portraiture in the history of Art. First part refers to the development of the self ? portrait in photography. Then I show how the self ? portrait was influenced from Ancient Egypt to Renaissance and Impressionism and how it is influenced in the present times. The self ? portrait has appeared in photography from the very beginning. Its different aspects are shown in photographic self ? portraits of famous photographers. In next chapter I focus on different features of this phenomenon in works of contemporary photographers such as Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Orlan, Jeff Koons, Gilbert and George and others. The sixth chapter is devoted to a seeking and exploring generation of younger artists from the Czech and Slovak Republics. They are either recent graduates in Art or students of Art at universities. I interview them in attempt to discover a source of inspiration for their photographic self ? portraits and to find out how it started, what goals they wanted to attain by self ? presentation and how they benefit from it. In the last chapter I explain the importance of self ? portrait in my life. Is it a form of art therapy or a form of narcissism? Are intimate confessions of artists really important in the present times? In conclusion I reflect on the answers from the interviews with some contemporary photographers and sum up my discoveries from them.
