Cross-cultural comparison of reality show Love is Blind (USA, Brazil, Japan)

This final thesis titled as "Cross-cultural comparison of reality show Love Is Blind (USA, Brazil, Japan)" focuses on the adaptation of the popular reality show Love Is Blind in the USA, Brazil, and Japan. The aim of the thesis is to analyze how the physical separation of contestants is reflected in the different cultural versions of the show with an emphasis on presenting these differences. The thesis is divided into two main parts which are the theoretical and the practical part. The theoretical one defines the topic with focus on the phenomenon of reality shows in general, followingly various types of this genre and examples of specific shows. It also includes an cross-cultural comparison using Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory. The practical part of the thesis includes the characteristics of the research, the actual analysis and results. The thesis is a qualitative content analysis with elements of narrative analysis. For the purposes of the research are used all episodes from the first series of each selected adaptation. In total, it is thirty-seven episodes which are available on the streaming platform Netflix. Comparison of Docusoap Series depicting Childbirth in Czech and foreign Media

The thesis "Comparison of Docusoap Series depicting Childbirth in Czech and foreign Media " deals with docusoap series depicting childbirth, both from Czech and foreign production. I will take into account both the conditions and environment in which the shows were produced and the specifics of the countries in which they were filmed. In the first chapter I will deal with the definition of the docusoap genre and its current state in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as its brief history. In the following, i.e. second chapter, I will deal with Czech programmes, while in the third chapter, foreign programmes will get their own space. I will focus on the content, the form of processing, examples of individual stories, and also the statements of the creators or participants. The fourth chapter will be devoted to the media image of childbirth as such, both in domestic and foreign media. The fifth and final chapter will then be devoted to the analysis itself, which will aim to reveal whether there are any noticeable differences in the way docusoap series on the topic of childbirth are produced in the Czech Republic and abroad, and what can be drawn from this for the docusoap genre as such.
A Comparison of Czech Adaptions of the Reality Show Survivor

This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of Czech adaptions of the reality show Survivor - i.e. Trosečník (Prima, 2006), Robinsonův ostrov (Nova, 2017), and Survivor Česko & Slovensko (Nova, 2022). In the theoretical part, reality TV is defined at first - its definition, characteristics, reasons for success, modes of representation, and the difference between reality TV and reality are outlined, history of the format, its classification to subgenres and reality TV in the Czech Republic is introduced. A description of the globalization of television formats and the process of adapting licensed formats follows it. In the analytical part, firstly, the comparison methodology is described, and briefly, the selected adaptions and the original global format are characterized. Subsequently, a comparison of three Czech adaptions of the reality show Survivor is accomplished. In two more recent adaptions, only the show's first series is included in the comparison. The comparison of adaptions is based on the following aspects: the name of the show, program strategy (broadcasting schedule, number, and duration of episodes, sideshow), the cast (contestants and hosts), the visual and audio elements of the show, the episode structure, rules, content selection, and feedback (viewership, reviews).
Audience motivations to watch cooking game shows on Czech television channels

This bachelor thesis deals with the audience motivation to watch cooking game shows on Czech television channels using the example of the competition"Peče celá země". The adaptation of the original British format, The Great British Bake Off, has become a very successful show on Czech television, achieving high ratings. The aim of this thesis is to find out what were the motivations of the viewers to watch this programme and what are their resulting reflections. The theoretical part looks at the relationship of society towards food. It focuses on the changes in the perception of food as a basic biological need, the consumer society and the influence of new media on eating habits. The thesis also describes the origins of reality TV, its evolution over time and the possibilities of learning from reality shows. In particular, it deals with the cooking show format, its beginnings on Czech television channels and describes the impact that watching it can have on viewers. Typology of participants in dating reality shows

This thesis examines the types of characters appearing on dating reality TV shows. Based on qualitative research, it tries to examine whether certain types of participants appear in this genre, if they are repeated and therefore it is possible to classify them into a certain type. The theoretical part of the work deals with emotionality in RTV, the commodification of emotions and also approaches this genre through its history and the circumstances of its creation. In the methodological part of the thesis, Zygmunt Bauman's typology of postmodern personalities is presented and is later used in the interpretation of the types that have arisen. Further, the applied research method of grounded theory is described. In the practical part of the thesis, the research itself is described, which is then related to Bauman's typology, the individual types that have arisen are described, and the concept of emodity is also taken into account when interpreting the data.
The Economics of Hatred in Reality TV

This diploma thesis deals with the formation of hatred towards the participants of the reality TV shows MasterChef Czechia and Married at First Sight. Specifically, the focus is on whether the shows and the participants in them have the potential to evoke this emotion among their viewers. The theoretical part deals with the relationship between television and the Internet environment, where this emotion can be subsequently stirred up within groups on discussion forums or social networks. It also defines the genre of reality TV into which are the TV shows included, and in the end defines hatred and other emotions that are closely related to it. Based on the findings from the literature, the characteristics that can potentially lead to the emotion under discussion are then identified. These traits are central to the subsequent determination of the research questions. In the research part, one particular series at a time (both were broadcast during 2020) is then qualitatively analysed for both TV shows, also there is the portrayal of all their main participants, with a particular focus on finding defined traits with the potential to provoke hatred. This bachelor 's thesis deals with the presence of sexism in the TV show Your face sounds familiar broadcast by TV Nova. The examined show Your face sounds familiar belongs to the genre of Reality TV, which will be described with its brief history in the thesis. The thesis will also introduce other concepts such as sexism, objectification theory and gender stereotypes. The thesis will provide a brief description of the show Your face sounds familiar. The practical part of the thesis is a qualitative analysis of media content for the study of television news according of E. E. Fields. This analysis will be conducted in seven stages. The aim of the qualitative analysis is to find out if sexism appears in the Czech reality show Your face sounds familiar, if so, what extent it occurs and who is the most frequent initiator.

Outwit, Outplay, Outlast: The Cultural Study of the Reality TV Phenomenon Survivor

This bachelor thesis is occupied with the phenomenon of the reality TV show Survivor (CBS, 2000). This cultural essay examines the historical development of the reality TV genre. Further, it studies cultural meanings of the reality TV show Survivor, such as a social darwinism, rituals, a life in a community or a voting drama. The main part deals with possibilities of the representation of masculinity in television. Multiple masculinities are analyzed by using the methodology of men's studies, especially through the perspective of the hierarchy of masculinities and the hegemonic masculinities by Raewyn Connell, and through the concept of the mutilated man by Elisabeth Badinter. The final case study is focused on the representation of nonhegemonic masculinities in reality TV show Survivor.
Factors of success of TV Chefs-"Cooking showorthiness"

There is only little attention payed to cooking shows in academic world. Mostly only mass media and public give their opinion on this topic. Due to many shows that exist and their spread, it is sufficient to concentrate on them also in academic writings. This diploma thesis tries to define cooking shows as genre. In analytic part it concentrates on one important aspect of cooking shows - their chefs. At first this thesis gives theoretic ground to cooking shows. It describes theories which are dealing with food. Then it takes a look on theories describing processes in contemporary culture. It is followed by chapter about reality TV and reality shows. History part about cooking shows contents also description of most important cooking shows and their chefs, both foregin and Czech production. At the end of theory part the position of cooking shows as TV genre is stated. In this thesis, new and unique term was created - TV chefs' values. It describes set of factors, which are important for TV chefs' to have to suceed. These factors are natural acting, sense of humor, loving food and vocational education in the field. The reseaarch was based on watching three cooking shows and interviews with people responsible for choosing chefs to these cooking shows.
