The second life of church anti-Nazi resistance in the catholic-oriented press of the third Czechoslovak republic

This bachelor thesis analyses the second life of the church anti-Nazi resistance, including its persecution as reflected in the selected Catholic-oriented press of the third Czechoslovak republic, i.e. in the years 1945-1948, especially in the magazines Katolík and Obzory. The first two chapters are devoted to the contemporary context and the press under study, and the most comprehensive chapter gives an overview of the second life of the church resistance in six subchapters, according to the object of commemoration. The thesis draws on selected contemporary national and regional press and secondary literature on church resistance and persecution during the Second World War and on the third Czechoslovak republic. On the basis of a thorough analysis of contemporary texts, the aim of this thesis is to describe the immediate second life of the church resistance with regard to its political use.

History of sports organization Orel in Bohemia between 1909 - 1948 In 1909, originated in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia sports organization Orel (the Eagle). Unified associations, which for Catholics organized gymnastic activities. Her ancestors were St. Joseph's unity, the Catholic companions and Christian Social gymnastic unions. Czech members of Eagle had a model of the Slovenian Catholic Orel, which was founded in Slovenia on beginning of 20th century by a priest and politician Jan Evangelista Krek. Organization of Orel established in the times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, in the times of Czechoslovak republic (1918 - 1938) greatly intensified throughout the country, in 1935 reached over 160,000 members. Lifelong mayor of Orel was Msgr. Jan Šrámek, a Catholic priest and politician. Orel ran physical education for men, women, youth and pupils in the Christian spirit. Exercises organized in local groups and two major rallies: international gymnastic festival in 1922 in Brno and St. Wenceslaus days of Orel in 1929 in Prague. Orel maintained contacts with foreign gymnastic and sports Christian societies, became a member of FICEP (Catholic International Gymnastics Federation). The authoritarian regime of the Second Republic and the Czech Catholic elite

The thesis deals with the authoritarian regime of the Second Czechoslovak Republic (1938-1939) in its Czech part, with the reasons of its origin, its description and its placement in the contemporary context. It shows the share of Catholic, politic and social elites in its creation as well as in efforts to enforce the Christian character of the new regime. It considers then critical stances against democracy of the Catholic Church, it compares authoritarian regime of the Second Republic with similiar regimes in then Europe and it tries to morally and ethically evaluate then stances of the Czech elites. The thesis also deals with anti-Jewish and anti-Gypsy measures of the Second Republic, and it tries to offer a valuable lesson from its development. The dissertation thesis deals with the life of the catholic priest, scientist in a discipline of the Christian sociology and a politics ThDr. Francis Reyl (1865-1935). Life stories, important positions which he held, his work and events that touched him, are presented in chronological order, as they occupied Reyl's life. The first part briefly outlines the historical situation of the Catholic Church in the Czech Republic and in Europe at the time of Reyl's life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The following section describes his fates from childhood through secondary school studies (including a stay in a church students' seminary Borromaeum) and the priests' seminary formation up to his ordination. The third part deals with Reyl's activities in the 19th and 20th centuries, when he was a director of the students' seminar Borromaeum and rector of the priests' seminary. In addition, he had published a lot and devoted himself to public life and established policy, which is included in this thesis also. The fourth and last part focuses on Reyl's fates and work during The First Czechoslovak Republic, when he was a senator in the National Assembly of the Czechoslovak Republic and devoted himself mainly to politics. Jan Scheinost. Catholic and Fascist, Journalist and Politician

The aim of the doctoral thesis is an analysis of the ideas and political activities of Jan Scheinost (1896-1964), a journalist and skilful backstage policymaker who was also known as an ideologist of Czech fascism. The thesis presents and analyses primarily those texts and activities of this controversial personality which were somehow unique, typical or atypical for the Czechoslovak political and intellectual scene of the First and Second Republic, i.e. from the 1920s to the period of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The influential Catholic journalist Scheinost is often connected not only with conservative traditional Catholicism but also with Fascism in academic literature. However, the thesis tries to prove that throughout his career, Jan Scheinost was always mainly looking for the most suitable movement or political party for putting into practice his aggressive Catholic ideas. At the same time the thesis also follows the historical, cultural and media context in which has Scheinost, as the editor in chief of the daily Lidové listy, acted.
