Šeflová, Tereza ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
This diploma thesis describes the way by which can photojournalism operate with the audience and how it is possible to influence a view of recipients about the world around us by photography. The thesis is devided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part is based on accessibility of the Czech and foreign literature and in its beginning that represents what photojournalism is and what is its role in media. A part of the opening chapter is also a discussion of ethics in the photojournalism. Furthermore, there is explanation of the process of how a recipient perceives visual communication. One of the key components of this work is a summary of how experts from the fields of photography and media see the possibility of influencing the audience with photos in the media. There are explained the concepts of the terms visual agenda setting and visual gatekeeping. The ways by which media most often manipulate a recipient are described and there is outlined also the question of objectivity in photojournalism. The end of the theoretical part is devoted to a relatively popular topic of digital photo editing in the media. The Role of Smartphone cameras in Czech Photojournalism
Sýsová, Kateřina ; Lábová, Alena (advisor) ; Teplá, Jana (referee)
In my bachelor thesis The Role of Smartphone cameras in Czech Photojournalism I am going to analyze how Czech photojournalism was influenced by modern mobile phones or so-called smartphones. This topic was examined by several graduates abroad. Anyway I did not succeed in finding any piece of work in which someone examined the influence of smartphones on the work of Czech photojournalists in detail. This reason combined with my interest into modern technologies and its influence on journalism meant for me the clear choice of this topic. In the first theoretical part I am going to describe the development of modern mobile phones and their penetration in everyday life as well as I am going to focus on applications which can make taking, editing or spreading pictures for photojournalist easier. In the next part I am going to focus on the phenomena of convergence. I am going to describe the process of photographical evolution as well as the democratization of photography in the last part of the theoretical section. I am going to complete the practical unit with help of compiling a case study in which I describe Czech professional photojournalists who use their phones for taking photographs. The last part will be complete by an interview with the launcher of the web iPhonefoto.cz and photographer Tomáš Tesař, who...
Photography in the Service of Journalism: A Social Semiotic Analysis of the Winning Pictures of Czech Press Photo (2006-2015)
Patáková, Veronika ; Řehořová, Irena (advisor) ; Fišerová, Michaela (referee)
This thesis deals with visual communication in the form of photography. Explaining the theories of Roland Barthes and Vilém Flusser we point out the tight relationship of this medium with reality that obscures its constructive character. The witness role of photography seems to be essential in the context of journalism, where we are offered a story by the pictures that is however mistaken for reality itself. The thesis tries to present practices of media discourse that make us perceive an event as newsworthy. It draws on the theory of news values and the methods of social semiotic analysis and applies these to the winning photos of the contest Czech Press Photo (2006-2015). We highlight the semiotic resources used in the meaning-making process in relation to each picture. The results show that the preferred constructed news values are negativity, aesthetic appeal, proximity and personalisation and that the winning photographs mostly strengthen their semblance of being strictly informative.

The development of czech sport's photojournalism from the middle of 20th century
Hejbal, Dominik ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Teplá, Jana (referee)
The paper deals with the development of the Czech journalistic sport photography from mid 20th century until recent time. Conditions that influenced the work of sports photographers are mapped, whether it was technical equipment, political constraints or other relevant facts. The paper mentions key events that have had importance in the Czech sports photography. The very beginnings of the Czech sports photography are described, too, to add context with the period followed. Furthermore, some noteworthy cases are mentioned, such as career change of a professional sportsman to a sport photographer. Ethically doubtful practices, once quite frequent, are followed, too. Another infrequently studied area of interest is discussed, which is the phenomenon of successful pictures of neglected events. The paper also provides the reader with a list of the foremost Czech sports photographers, a quantitative analysis of sport photos in the Rude Pravo daily (name later changed to Pravo). Main moments of change are studied from the point of view of the extent of the sport photography on the pages of Czech dailies. Since this topic has not been extensively covered by books, an important part of the paper is based on original interviews with veteran Czech sport photographers, including Stanislav Tereba, the only Czech winner...

Svatá, Kristýna ; Lábová, Alena (advisor) ; Turek, Pavel (referee)
Bachelor thesis "The Photography in the Respekt magazine" deals with using photographies in this medium. It emphasizes the period of the first half of the year 2006, when the magazine serialized as a broadsheet, and the period of the first half of the year 2008, when it changed its format to the magazines' one. The purpose of this thesis is to subscribe, how the redaction deals with the pictorial part of the magazine's content - it observes what is behind the creation and what happens with pictures before they are published. It subscribes the role of the photographer and the picture editor as well. The next issue, which is pointed out, is the analysis of the photographic content in both periods under consideration. It shows changes which were connected with the formats' change, with new possibilities for photography in the magazine. This analytical part of my thesis is led by the chapters which present the history and the contemporary version of the Respekt magazine. The next chapter deals with photojournalism and its classification.

Novák, Ondřej ; Lábová, Alena (advisor) ; Turek, Pavel (referee)
In this bachelor thesis, I will attempt to describe and document a very important sociological issue in modern Czech history: expulsion of the German population from Czechoslovakia after the Second World War. The main method that I will be applying is visual sociology. Obtained knowledge from the research are classified in the historical and sociological context overlapped to the present. I have chosen specific time and place so that I can demonstrate issue of the expulsion of German population from the Czech borders area. I realize the extent of this issue and also that it is not possible to analyze the issue as a whole on dozen of pages. Still, I think that based on the findings of this research, readers will be able to imagine conclusions in a broader context and that this knowledge reader will be able to create an image of this issue in the present and its impact on the landscape and society. For the main part of this thesis I consider my photographs of the place, on which this work reports. On the basis of the theory of visual sociology, I consider these pictures the most important part of this work. On the basis of these photographs, the reader (or viewer) stores the information that is absorbed and his subjective perception of these images creates feel and the views of the problems with real...
