Kadeřábek, Jan ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Macková, Veronika (referee)
The diploma thesis analyses the media coverage of the 1948 Summer Olympics in London and 1952 in Helsinki in selected Czechoslovakian media. The qualitative content analysis compares the transformation of Olympic coverage in London with Helsinki, especially from an ideological point of view. The thesis begins with a description of the post-war development of Czechoslovakia between 1945 and 1952, continues with media development in the same period and through the definition of theoretical concepts - communism, capitalism, ideology, ideological square and methodology - reaches the most extensive part dealing with the British and Finnish Games from the view of the Czechoslovakian press. This part of the thesis is further divided into subchapters according to the topics that were most covered by the Czechoslovakian media at the Games. This is followed by a comparison between the London and Helsinki Games, which, based on examples, describes the ideological transformation of coverage and media content of the Czechoslovakian media between 1948 and 1952.

Vávra, Martin ; Železný, Jakub (advisor) ; Růžička, Daniel (referee)
The bachelor's thesis titled "The Media Image of State Security in the Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo dailies (November 1989-June 1990)" discusses the media's image of the State Security Organisation (StB) over a period of several months following the events of the 17th of November 1989, when the communist regime in Czechoslovakia fell. The dailies analysed for this study were Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo. The periodicals were selected according to their political orientations. Rudé právo, described as "a paper published by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia", was a daily that officially represented the governing regime. Svobodné slovo, which began publishing the first uncensored information in November 1989 and called the "primary daily" of the Velvet Revolution, was selected as its opposite counterpart. This work has four chapters. The first chapter examines the State Security Organisation and its history, organisational structure, methods and manner of work in 1989. The second chapter presents the selected dailies Rudé právo and Svobodné slovo. The third chapter discusses the methodology of the entire work, and the final chapter contains research on the selected dailies in the form of a quantitative content analysis.

Media coverage of Korean war by the journal Rudé právo
Chrenčík, Roman ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
This Diploma thesis deals with the media coverage of the Korean war in the Rudé právo daily, in that period the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Its main goal is to ascertain the rate of influence of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, of rigorous censorship of the regime and Soviet Union dictatorship upon informing about events of the Korean war, which was the first conflict ever where the United Nations army, consisting of several states, was fighting together. For this purpose, by studying secondary resources I am first of all describing conditions leading to the war and determining the most important events of the war, including for instance landing of the United Nations forces in Incheon, China involvement or distinct phases of armistice negotiations. The crucial part of this thesis is the portrayal of these events in the newspaper, including monitoring of tens of issues between late May 1950 and early October 1950. Regarding the facts ascertained by that time I am switching to five days cycles of newspaper monitoring, which has by the end proven to be absolutely sufficient for creating a comprehensive image.

Rybáčková, Nikola ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Knapík, Jiří (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on events in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia from September to December 1941 and their image in the selected Czech periodical press. During September 1941, there was an intensified wave of resistance, which was culminated by a successful proclamation of the London radio broadcasting to boycott the Protectorate press by the Czech society. At the end of September 1941, it was suddenly announced that the Protector Konstantin von Neurath is ill. His role in the Protectorate should be then filled in by Reinhard Heydrich as a deputy Protector. He is the person associated with the following period, when serious reprisals against the Czech society took place. In addition to the declaration of martial law, the most important incidents where an arrest of the Prime Minister of the Protectorate Alois Eliáš, a death of the prominent activist journalist Karel Lažnovský and worsening of anti-Jewish measures, including the start of the actual realization of the Final Solution of the Jewish Question. The thesis analyses a way of presentation of the events of the last third of 1941 in the selected Czech official press, which was used as a propaganda and manipulation instrument of the occupation power, and a way of presentation in the selected illegal and exile Czech periodicals.

Svatošová, Lucie ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis Strahov Affairs in the Context of Student Movements and their Resonance in Czechoslovak Contemporary Press deals with the spontaneous demonstration of students staying at the college campus of the Czech Technical University in Prague. A demonstration for return of the genuine light and warmth to their halls was held on 31th October, 1967 and became a beginning of the changes in a youth organization that the students have been striving for a long time. The Strahov Affairs are also a milestone of the Prague Spring, which took place in the first half of 1968. The aim of the thesis is to find out how the Czechoslovak press has reported on the events at Strahov, and on the related activities of the young student generation. Two newspapers, Rude pravo (Red Law) and Mlada fronta (Young Front), and two student magazines, Student (Student) and Universita Karlova (Charles University) are subjected to a qualitative content analysis. "We were writing between the lines" (TV portrait - journalist Marta Bystrovová)
Mališová, Klára ; Šobr, Michal (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
This bachelor thesis consists of two parts - a practical and a theoretical one. The practical part is called We were writing between the lines and it is a documentary TV portrait of Marta Bystrovová, who was a journalist in Svobodné slovo for 25 years (between 1966-1991). The editorial office of this journal was situated at Wenceslas Square and because of that, Marta Bystrovová became a direct witness of the milestones in the history of Czechoslovakia (such as 1968 and 1989). Despite the press oppression, she did not hesitate to honestly inform about the events. Therefore the documentary is trying to show how it all influenced her opinions and beliefs. It is also demonstrating that there are ordinary people with extraordinary life story, whom nobody is saying ‚thanks' to, but they undoubtedly contributed to the evolvement of our society. The theoretical part adds facts to the practical one. First of all, it introduces Svobodné slovo, then, in comparison with Rudé právo, it focuses on what were the differences between these two journals and what was the role of Svobodné slovo, which was not, unlike from Rudé právo, under straight control of the leading Communist party, and therefore was trying to inform honestly about what was happening. The following chapter is about portraits in Svobodné slovo,...
Signs of Propaganda in the normalization TV series Boys and men
Štarman, Ondřej ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis examines television production in the 1980s in former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, specifically the series Boys and men (1988) by director Evžen Sokolovský. In the theoretical part, the reader will learn the propaganda theory and its types. In addition, the concept of discourse and approaches to discourse analysis are introduced. At the end of the theoretical part, the work looks into the context of the series; the concepts of normalization and rebuilding are presented. A theory of a story construction is also briefly described. The work in the practical part aims to reveal the supposedly embedded propaganda messages in the series. The author tries to identify those messages and thus confirm the political assignment of the series (to improve the image of the army in the eyes of the Czechoslovak society). Another aim of the thesis is to describe the means, by which the communication was delivered. The analysis of the series is directly linked to the analysis of media outputs in printed media, namely in Rudé právo and Týdeník ČST, where the author searches for the series-related articles. The aim of this effort is to find a formulation of the political assignment, which would again serve as a proof of its existence. In order to analyze the content of the series and the media...
