Diploma thesis "Russia and the Kaliningrad Region: A Solution to the Exclave Problems in the Years 2000 - 2010" deals with the exclave problems of the Kaliningrad oblast, a Russian exlave on the Baltic Sea coast, and how they were solved at the beginning of the 21st century. The thesis first presents a brief outline of the historical development of the examined region - East Prussia and Kaliningrad Oblast until 1991. Subsequently, it deals with exclave problems in the 1990s. The main part of this work examines in detail exclave problems after the year 2000. It firstly deals with economic issues. Subsequently it focuses on the discussion regarding a possible change of the status of the Kaliningrad Region within the Russian Federation. The work also shows how the issue of transit through the territory of the European Union was solved. Eventually it will address the military issues. This thesis uses the theory of enclaves, as prepared by Russian economist Yevgeny Vinokurov. This theory determines problems that are common to most enclaves and exclaves.
Human Trafficking in Russia in European and international context
Pojman, Petr ; Kubát, Michal (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
In this work I deal mainly with tree aspects of human trafficking in Russian Federation. In the criminological perspective I focused on the process in which women become victim of human trafficking. Likewise, I am trying to characterize organized crime and principles of its operation in Russia. Both of these aspects are described in the context of security, political, economic and social situation in both the destination and source regions. Russia is due to its social, economic and geographical situation transit, source and destination country simultaneously. I specifically focused on international trafficking. National trafficking is more latent but it is mentioned in the context of international one. I deal with the situation of victims in particular contexts, which is uses by organized crime to obtain them. There is brief outline of their role in investigating of cases of human trafficking. The main theme of this work is a criminal organization. I especially deal with the ways in which criminal organizations are involved in illegal migration and trafficking women outside the territory of the Russian Federation. The work is conceived primarily as a description and analysis of the broader issues related to human trafficking in Russia, particularly in international and European context. Usually do...
Ancient blood, modern vengeance: the impact of traditional culture and blood feud on violence in Chechnya
Cozort, Kathryn ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Pikal, Kamil (referee)
This paper examines the impact of traditional Chechen culture, especially the continued practice of blood feuds, on violence in the republic. First, an in depth discussion of clannish society is used to show how and why such traditional characteristics and ancient customs have been allowed to thrive among the Chechen people, especially those living in the highlands. The focus then turns to the strong concept of honor that flourishes in Chechen society as the main motivator of blood feuds. The more detailed discussion of blood feud itself and its ancient and modern practice show the potential for and realization of widespread violence in Chechnya. The Chechens are a people with deep historical roots and a strong collective memory. The events of the past, especially conflict with Russia, greatly influence the events of the present and future. The modern Chechen identity is a unique mentality, which combines role of teip and its strong influence on society with the rise of nationalism, and later Islamic nationalism. The recent wars in Chechnya have also had a defining characteristic on the Chechen people and their psyche. When this kind of crisis is combined with the traditional Chechen culture and a propensity for violence, the outcome can be devastating, especially when violence is radicalized and...
Analysis of the institutional environment in the context of small business tax-evasion in Russia
Lopatina, Anastasia ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Jiří (referee)
In this work we make analysis of the tax evasion practices which have become widely used by the small and medium enterprises in the Russian transitional economy. Taxation has always been the issue best describing relations between state and private business; in Russian economy taxation has come to characterize specificity of interactions between authorities at different levels of government and businessmen. We look at the current situation through the theoretical framework provided by the neoinstitutional theory which allows us to consider data and facts collected on the problem through the perspective of institutional change. By employing analytical tools of the neoinstitutionalism we consider tax evasion as a part of evolving institutional environment. Persistence and prevalence of the schemes used by small businesses to avoid payment of full tax liabilities leads us to qualify the current situation as an institutional dead-lock or in other words inefficient socio economic equilibrium: tax-evasion is seen as an illegal activity by the state and development-hampering by businesses, nonetheless the practice persists for decades. We consider that institutions are promoted and supported by different groups united by common socio-economic interest, therefore to describe and analyse this situation we identify...
Russia-Belarus Unification. Chosen Problems and perspectives of Union State (1999-2008)
Osipova, Kristina ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
Russo-Belarus Unification. Chosen Problems and perspectives of Union State (1999-2008). The main subject of the diploma thesis is cooperation between Russia and Belarus within the Union State of Russia and Belarus, which was established in 1999. After the break up of the USSR, cooperation between the newly independent states was largely defined by their membership in CIS. However, during the first five years an integration core emerged, consisting of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. These states were mainly cooperating in economic sphere, which finally emerged into international organization (Eurasian Economic Community). Belarus is one of the former Soviet republics, which kept and is still keeping very close relations with Russian Federation. Their bilateral integration begins after the breakup of USSR and culminates in 1999, when treaty of establishing Union State of Russia and Belarus is signed. During the almost 10 year period between 1999 and 2008, however, the cooperation did not move forward as was originally planned. In my opinion, the main topics which delay effective Russo-Belarus integration are as follows: prices for energetic commodities (oil and gas) for Belarus; implementation of common currency - Russian ruble; and ratification of Constitutional Act of Union State....
Missiles and Radars as Security Dilemma The Case of the Third Pillar of the U.S. Missile Defence in Central Europe
Kantor, Lukáš ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee)
The thesis deals with the former Bush's plan of the so-called third pillar of the American missile defense system in Poland and Czech republic. We demonstrate on this topic the value of several key (neo)realist theoretical concepts. Specifically, the exact types and functioning of security dilemmas are analyzed in the framework of American-Russian, American-Iranian and American-Czech/Polish relations. The thesis also illustrates the importance of related modalities of deterrence and shows, which states and how balanced the US. In addition to that, attention is paid to the question whether the "shield" was motivated by defensive realist worries about security or rather by offensive realist struggle for power and gains at the expense of others.
