Maltreatment, abuse and neglect seniors from the perspective of nurse.
HAMPERGROVÁ, Izabela
This thesis called "Mistreat, abuse and neglect of seniors from the point of view of a nurse" comprises of theoretical and empirical part. It deals with violence against seniors and the point of view of a nurse on this problem. The theoretical part of this thesis comprehensively summarizes the issue of physical and emotional abuse and neglect of seniors. It contains definitions and important concepts and forms of violence, which are described in detail. Very important part is also the description of risk factors of physical and emotional abuse and neglect of seniors, the diagnosis and possibility of solution of the problem. Further on the theoretical part focuses also on abuse and neglect of seniors in nursing homes and organizations helping elderly people who find themselves in such a difficult situation. The last and integral part in this issue is the role of a nurse. The focus of the empirical part of this thesis was to find out the point of view of nurses on the issue of physical and emotional abuse and neglect of seniors, forms of violence nurses have witnessed in their practice, measures they adopt in case of suspected abuse and neglect of a senior. The next focus was to identify the groups of seniors where violence can occur. On the basis of these goals four questions have been determined. To fulfil the goals, strategies of qualitative research have been used; method of questioning and semi-structured dialogue. The choice of the group of participants observed in the research study was intentional and constituted of nine general nurses working in home care agencies and senior nursing homes. In the interviews the nurses were asked about having witnessed with senior experiencing abuse and neglect, what form of violence occurred in the case, who committed it, who the nurses informed in case of suspected abuse and neglect, what indications they could observe, whether they are familiar with forms of helping and organization that deal with this issue and how in their opinion violence against seniors could be prevented. Dialogues have been recorded through direct transcription. Analysis of the respondents replies have been carried out through open coding from which eight categories have emerged. From the results of the dialogues it is evident that all respondents have encountered at least one form of mistreat, abuse or neglect of seniors. Most of the nurses have described family-related violence against seniors. Further findings have shown, most nurses offered help with handling the situation but the senior or the family refused any help. The results show nurses posses basic general knowledge of mistreat, abuse and neglect of seniors and they take active interest in this issue. The findings of this thesis can be used as source material for nurses and nursing students and can be used as basis for further research in this particular area.

Foreknowledge of Kindergarten Teachers in the Ceske Budejovice about CAN Syndrome
DIVOKÁ, Iva
This bachelor thesis concetrates on the problem of the CAN syndrome. I chose this topic to find out if the kindergarten teachers in České Budějovice are faced with this problem and if they have sufficient knowledge about it. The thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part has got four main chapters. The first chapter defines the Child Abuse and Neglect syndrome and looks into its history. The second chapter describes in detail the various forms of the CAN syndrome we can encounter. The third chapter concentrates on the consequences of child abuse. Here I describe the mental deprivation, the post-traumatic stress disorder and the trans-generational transfer. Prevention plays an important role, so the fourth chapter concentrates on it. I explain what constitutes primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. The goal of the practical part is to find out how informed the kindergarten teachers in České Budějovice are about the CAN syndrome; what is their attitude to this problem and how often do they encounter it. I also postulated a hypothesis, wherein I assume that a college educated person is more informed about the CAN syndrome than a person with high school education. The statistical evaluation has shown that to be the case. The hypothesis was evaluated using the chi quadrate test in Microsoft Excel. The practical part also describes my work method. The research used quantitative strategy. I gathered the needed data by questioning. I prepared my own questionnaire, fully anonymous, consisting of eleven questions focused on the respondents' knowledge of the CAN syndrome. The questionnaire consisted of closed, semi-closed and open questions. The data collecting took place in kindergartens in České Budějovice. 63 questionnaires were handed out, with a return of 84%. It is clear from the results that people with college education are more informed about the CAN syndrome than people with high school education. This became obvious mainly when the respondents were asked to define the syndrome. College educated people were also more familiar with the various forms of the syndrome. As for the attitude to the problem, no teacher with college education had said they would not inform anyone about such a situation, while someone with a high school education had. The thesis could be used by the teachers to gain more scientific information about the CAN syndrome. It could help them prevent violence on children or to recognize the problem sooner. The thesis could also be a good source of information for the general public.
The role of the teacher in the issue of CAN
VOLKOVÁ, Andrea
The aim of this thesis was to monitor the school community's awareness about the issue Syndrome CAN and the ability and willingness of teachers to solve such situations. The theoretical part was focused on the characteristics of the CAN syndrome, its forms, manifestations and causes. This part was also given to the legislation and prevention. The research was attended by a total of 148 teachers of kindergartens and elementary schools situated in South Bohemia and Highland. Four hypotheses were defined for the research purposes, three of them: 1/"the educational community admits that the availability of information about the syndrome CAN should be improved",2/"if the teachers knew about incidents of violence, neglect or abuse of a child they would be willing to solve this situation and not 3/"the teachers are not fully confident that they could recognize the symptoms of the syndrome CAN", were confirmed. The hypothesis that the teachers know how to deal with the situation when the violence, neglect or child abuse is revealed wasn´t confirmed. According to the research the teachers are not convinced or do not know how to deal with the situation when they are confronted with abused or neglected child. The data were statistically processed and evaluated.
Specifics of social work with the elderly at risk syndrome Elder Abuse and Neglect
KRÁLOVÁ, Iveta
This diploma thesis deals with problems of the Elder Abuse and Neglect Syndrome, that is abuse, mistreatment and neglect of senior citizens. The diploma thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is further divided into nine chapters. Ageing, senescence as well as biological, mental and social changes are described in the first chapter. The next chapter is devoted to the phenomenon of ageism, its sources and manifestations of discrimination by caretakers. Domestic violence and its specifics are defined in the third chapter, where the myths of domestic violence are included as well. The fourth chapter deals extensively with the EAN syndrome. All possible sorts/types of the violence (i.e. physical, psychical, economical, sexual etc.) are described in this chapter. The following chapter is devoted to the root causes, risk factors, diagnosis and possible consequences of abuse and neglect of senior citizens. General profile of the victim/abuser, preventive measures and possible solutions of this phenomenon are described in this chapter too. General information about where to get help if needed can be found in chapter six. The last three chapters of this diploma thesis dwell on the social work with senior citizens, crisis intervention in person and crisis intervention by phone. The second part of this diploma thesis is of practical nature. The purpose of it was to find out whether selected social workers (caring professional staff) are well informed of and familiar with the EAN syndrome, whether they have direct experience with any abused elderly person, and what tools are being used when dealing with the studied phenomenon. I used the qualitative research design for the data gathering, the method of questioning and the technique of semi-controlled interview. The qualitative research was executed in the period of November 2012 to February 2013 in the form of semi-structured interview in Třebíč and in České Budějovice. The selected workers - social workers, caretakers and nurses - participated in the research conduct. The workers of selected facilities were chosen according to whether they fitted in with the elaborated framework of quota sampling. The final group was made up of 10 respondents (10 women). The respondents were between the ages of 35 to 55 years. The semi-controlled interview with selected social workers was made on the basis of predetermined questions in a fixed order. Outcomes of the interviews were processed in the form of interview analysis. After the processing of the results I found out, that all workers in selected facilities in Třebíč and in České Budějovice are not sufficiently aware of the problems of the EAN Syndrome. Furthermore, the research revealed that 8 out of 10 respondents had direct experience with mistreated, abused and neglected elderly person. Economic abuse was the most common one along with self-neglect and rude behavior from the caring staff. The last, third aim of the practical part of my diploma thesis was to find out what tools of social work are being used by workers when dealing with elderly persons suffering the EAN Syndrome. Interview was the most commonly used tool of social workers in selected facilities. The next tools are reporting the situation to the superior staff, getting in touch with experts in the field (i.e. psychologist, psychiatrist), social unions and the police. After the processing of the results I reached the conclusion. Despite the fact that selected workers face various kinds of abuse, mistreatment and neglect of elderly persons, they are insufficiently informed about the EAN Syndrome.
