Impacts of China's development aid and investment in Africa, focusing on Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000-2015
Leová, Leona ; Procházka, Pavel (advisor) ; Zeman, Martin (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with development aid in general, presents its definition and analyzes in particular the development of various attitudes that were previously discussed. This theoretical background is an essential part of finding more effective approaches, as it can generally be said that the Western assistance to date has failed to do so. The work is thus further dealt with by other development cooperation alternatives that could be capable of 'the poorest' billion out of poverty. The second part then deals exclusively with the role of China in Africa, first attempts to map out the activities it deals with, and acquaintances with forms of cooperation that are different from those with other countries in the past. It represents the type of cooperation on which the most valuable investments of this bilateral aid are built, which are projects for the construction of transport and energy infrastructures in exchange for access to African natural resources, especially oil. In addition, the work focuses on the characteristics of the current socio-economic situation of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and evaluates the development of the most important economic and social indicators such as GDP and HDI. It finds that these variables generally record growth and improvement, which is not so significant in the social sphere, indicators that are more tangible about the quality of life of the people in these countries. In general, the work comes to the conclusion that China's presence in Africa is largely positive, as China, as a country with experience of transformation from a backward country into the world's second largest economy, has chosen a different approach to cooperation with the Third World, Exploiting their comparative advantage, which is the presence of mineral wealth and cheap labor, in exchange for what they are acutely needed - the development of transport and energy infrastructure.

Štamberk, David ; Tomášek, Michal (advisor) ; Balaš, Vladimír (referee) ; Křepelka, Filip (referee)
Investment Policy of the European Union - protection of foreign direct investment Abstract One of the changes brought about by the Lisbon Treaty is the explicit inclusion of foreign direct investment and its protection in the common commercial policy of the European Union. This is one of the areas of exclusive competence of the EU. The European Union has subsequently stated negotiating bilateral agreements governing, inter alia, investment issues. However, it has not been spared from controversy and negative publicity that has been accompanying especially the TTIP and the CETA. This work aims to analyse the investment policy of the EU and mutual interaction of its institutions with the Member States and third parties. After general introduction to the topic of international investment law and EU law (chapters II. and III.), it is devoted to the issue of protection of foreign investment in the internal market. Its regime is then compared with the BIT regime (chapter IV.). Attention is then focussed towards the EU's external relations in the field of investment protection. Its competence is subjected to further analysis (chapter V.) and current results of efforts of the Commission and the EU as such are also discussed (chapter VI.). It is so in the light of possible impacts of foreign investment in terms of...

The relationship between international investment agreements and EU law has attracted increased attention in past few years. After a short introduction (Chapter I.), Chapter II. briefly overviews typical content of bilateral investment treaties, following with a more detailed analysis of relevant EU law rules concerning foreign investment and subsequent comparison of both sets of rules. Chapter III. deals with investment agreements to be concluded by the EU, in particular with questions of external competence for foreign investment, responsibility for breaches of investment agreements concluded by the EU and the future shape of EU investment policy. The status of existing bilateral investment treaties concluded between EU member states and third countries is analyzed in Chapter IV. Chapter V. tackles various issues related to investment treaties concluded between member states (so called intra-EU BITs).
Institutional Determinants of Investment Inflows into Transitional Economies
Donu, Victoria ; Mertlík, Pavel (advisor) ; Benáček, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis investigates the relationship between institutional quality and the level of investment inflows into post-communist countries. I attempt to empirically verify the argument that institutional determinants are essential in explaining the variation in investment inflows into transition economies after the demise of socialism in the early 1990s. The role of institutions is assessed using Economic Freedom indices provided by the Heritage Foundation. Consequently, to investigate the progress of institutional quality in transition economies, I further employ indicators developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Using a panel data set for 11 transition countries from 1993 to 2013, I conclude that the impact of institutional quality on investment inflows is not negligible, yet much weaker than suggested by the existing theoretical literature. Using a fixed-effects model framework in both regression benchmarks with metrics from the Heritage Foundation and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, respectively, I observe that the impact of institutional variables on the level of investment was less significant than expected. Moreover, macroeconomic fundamentals appear to always play a more substantial role than institutional factors. KEYWORDS: foreign direct...
