Burn it and that's it? "Funeral without a ceremony" from the survivors' perspective

In the past couple of years, Czech press has repeatedly reported on the ascending number of funerals without any ceremony. Among the interpretations of the approximately 30% share of this kind of funeral were high level of secularization, disintegration of social bonds and the modern denial of death. The present thesis offers a change of perspectives and focuses the analysis of the phenomenon "funeral without a ceremony" on the acteur perspective. Based on the analysis of ten semi-structured interviews, the author 1) indentifies the motivations, attitudes and situational factors that build up the respondent's legitimations of the decision for a funeral without a ceremony; and 2) systematically analyses and interprets the ritual practices and symbolic action (ritualizations), which the respondents report in relation with the death of a close one. A detailed analysis of the respondents narratives shows, that a funeral without a ceremony organized by a certified undertaker does not necessarily mean that the death is devoid of ritual, framing it in a way meaningful to the respondents. Funeral Scenes in Minoan and Mycenaean Pictorial Art in LM IIIA-B and LH IIIA-B Periods

The subject of this paper is the portrayal of funeral scenes in pictoral art of the Third Phase of Late Minoan and Late Helladic culture. The topic of this study is the iconography of pictoral vases and clay coffins (larnakes). However, in the attempt of their interpretation, the author also sometimes considers seals, frescoes and the like. Occasionally, he also uses data from other ancient cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean basin. The goal of the Essay is to clarify some of the customs and worldview associated with death within the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.

The first part introduces the reason of Gottwald's death in March of 1953, especial way of an autopsy and also a situation of his personal doctors. The second part is dedicated to the organization of "military-civilian" funeral and mourning celebrations in the whole county. The last part is thematically divided for answering questions about the embalmment for example reminding other still-working mausoleums in the world, describing building adjustments of the National Memorial on the Vítkov Hill or the value of so called "additional embalmment." Christian Church Funeral Ceremonies

he diploma thesis "Christian Church Funeral Ceremonies" deals with Roman Catholic Church funeral ceremonies, both preceding and following the Second Vatican Council reforms, Greek Catholic Church funeral ceremonies and those of Eastern Orthodox Church, Czechoslovak Hussite Church and Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. It describes various ceremonies and their historical development. By means of comparing the structures of these ceremonies it attempts to find what they have in common as well as what makes them distinctively different in terms of liturgy and theological teaching. It examines the theme of death, after-life conceptions, and funeral ceremonies in life of ancient people and European pagans, Jewish tradition and culture of Middle ages. It also covers the area of the last things of a man and resurrection matter as far as it is mentioned in liturgical books. Finally it questions the suitability of available liturgical texts concerning special cases and new forms of funeral ceremonies. The picture of Jan Palach in czech culture

This thesis deals with cultural image of Jan Palach. It focuses especially on symbols and myths contributing to construction of this image. The main emphasis is given on the concept of sacrifice - the study analyzes comparisons of Jan Palach to archetypes of Jesus Christ and young martyrs. In the second part author analyzes national dimension of Palach's cultural image. She deals with comparison of Palach to Jan Hus and analyzes Palach's funeral as a part of tradition of Czech public funerals - quiet national demonstrations. The methodology of the study is discourse analysis, which is applied not only on texts (fiction and nonfiction), but also on photographic and film footage.
Notions of after-life and meaning of death in Zuni society

Bachelor's thesis called Visions of the afterlife and the importance of death for the Zuni Indian tribe is trying to provide a comprehensive view of the funeral rituals and death beliefs among the selected society of the Puebloan Indians. At first, I try to outline the historical background of the development of the Zuni tribe, along with a brief description of the manner of life and religion and its changes, especially under the influence of Spanish conquerors and Christian religion. After that I am trying to put topic itself into this outline. The paper also briefly deals with selected myths that are one of the main sources of ideas about the afterlife among Zuni for this thesis. The thesis devotes most attention to the afterlife along with funerary ritual. The main objective of this work is both to see how ideas about the death of Zuni reflect their society, and what is meaning of death for them. The paper strives to show that importance of death is in the context of maintaining the unity of a society that is so typical for this tribe.
The journey of Princess Eleonore of Schwarzenberg to Great Britain in 1838 and her son Walter Prosper

The aim of this bachelor thesis is the reconstruction of the 1838 journey of prince Johann Adolf II. of Schwarzenberg to Great Britain, as described by his wife, princess Eleonore née of Lichtenstein, who accompanied him. In the connection with the British journey of the couple, the thesis also deals with their son, prince Walter Prosper, conceived along the way to Britain. With regard to the premature death of prince Walter, the focus is primarily on his funeral ceremony and the connected rituals. To explore the chosen topic, a lot of archive material, that had not been processed before, was used. Based on said archives, a partial reconstruction of the journey was possible, from the point of view of Eleonore, who is a rather overlooked figure in historiography. Additionally, the funeral ritual of prince Walter is described and compared with common funerals of Schwarzenberg family. Death and rituals associated with death of children at elementary school a in present-day society.

This thesis deals with the view of death in current society in ČR. The first part of the thesis defines the concept of death which touches our lives. It examines death from the point of view of sociology, psychology and theology. The second part is dedicated to meeting children with death in their life and is focused on possibilities to meet with the topic of death in school education. The third part follows up with rituals which help us to go through certain situations together. The final fourth part shows us results of quantitative research in the understanding of death in children of younger school age.
The Last Things - ethical aspects of dying and burial

The work deals with the last things of the man from dying, through fear of death, burial and funeral rituals, to the demands that are placed on the funeral service. The work is not focused only on the actual experience of dying and his last period of life, but great attention is paid to survivors, particularly in the context of grieving, coping with loss and consultancy for survivors. In this thesis is provide space for all the various topics that are related to the last things of the man - funeral, cemeteries and funeral services that work closely with the survivors, who come to arrange a funeral. Summarizes the statutory regulations, codexes and regulations, which funeral services must at all times observe. It also mentions the role of undertaker and function of consultancy for survivors.
How to introduce children to the topic of death?

In this thesis I follow up the question How can we communicate with children in a question of death. I mainly focus on dying, acceptance of death and what are the effects that death can have on children i describe historical and current views of the death from sociological perpective. I compare the differences of burials in various countries. Burials are closely related with the topics like grief and remembrance of survivors. The work also shows views of children's literature on the subject of death. This literature has become a guide for understanding the child's feelings perceived in personal contact with death. It also says how the child accept and how it is influenced by death. Finally, it points out the importance of communication and explanation of the current situation of the child. The main role does family or professional assistance that should be provided to the child. The contribution of this work to see that the critically summarized on Czech literature and briefly compared to abroad.
