Media Image of Russians in Carlsbadˇs press
Čepelák, Václav ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kubíčková, Vladimíra (referee)
1 Abstract The thesis intends to explore the ways of creating the image of Carlsbad Russians in the mass media. These ways are researched by the quantitative content analysis. The sample for this analysis was constructed by a selection of articles from the years 2006-2010 from the Mediasearch database (provided by Newton Media, Corp.) according to described selection criteria. This analysis is set in the context of various sociological theories (esp. to explain the context of the relationship between the Russian community and local population) and several theories that focus on the functioning of media with a special emphasis on the construction of foreign communities' image. The research shows how the media image of Russians in the Carlsbad press has been stereotypized, to what extent they have been individualized in the articles and with which contextual topics they have been connected most often. Another output of the analysis is a typology which characterizes the basic modes of providing information about the community. Relatively low overall number of articles about the Russians shows the difficulty of access of the community to the media. It is demonstrated that in the two strongest types of articles, building and property ownership is connected with Russians and with cohabitation of the two ethnic...
Acculturation Strategies in Musical Self-presentations of Immigrants in the Czech Republic
Skořepová, Zita ; Jurková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Stavělová, Daniela (referee)
This thesis is based on my research dealing with musicians - members of different immigrant minority communities, who explicitly identify themselves with their ethnicity and the region of their origin. The musicians mention that they come, e.g., from Cuba, Ukraine or generally from "Central Asia" and the music offered to the audience is presented as "Cuban", "Ukrainian folk" or "traditional music of Central Asia". The subject of study are their concerts, regarded as musical occasions - performances - with defined modes of participants' interaction. In the Goffmanian sense, the meaning of each selfpresentation is determined by the behavior of the musicians during the performances, and the repertoire, place and occasion of the event and type of audience are considered as "bearers of sings". In their self-presentations, the musicians expose in various ways who they are, where they come from and in various ways present the musical (not only) culture of their origin. Inspiring myself by typology of acculturation strategies formulated by John W. Berry (Berry et al., 1997), I try to identify acculturation strategies based on factors determining the character of the respective musical self-presentations of the immigrants. When can we observe behavior according to the principles of integration on the one...
Green Card - a card wich does not attract or evaluation of simplified employment of foreigners
Solnářová, Dagmar ; Nekola, Martin (advisor) ; Winkler, Jiří (referee)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the evaluation of the project of green cards which is a Czech version of the programme of advantageous employment for the foreigners. Green card represents a special type of visa authorization which the citizens from selected countries outside of EU and EEA can apply for. The project was supposed to attract the foreign workers to come and work in Czech Republic in the fields with high demand of labour force, and thus to meet the needs of employers and to stabilize the situation on the labour market. It was expected that it would raise the interest of tens of thousands of foreigners. However, in reality the program is used to the minimal extent and to these days (or so to say by the end of 2012) Czech Republic issued less than four hundred green cards. Therefore, the main aim of this thesis is to define the reasons behind the low and unsatisfactory use of this programme. The thesis is based on the theory of implementation. The main theoretical basis represents: top-down institutional framework of P. Sabatier and D. Mazmanian and an instrumental approach combining multiple perspectives of various authors. Hence the design of the research can be characterised as a case study in which both qualitative and quantitative research methods are applied. Specific data...

Residential Mobility of Prague Population with Focus on Ethnic Minorities
Přidalová, Ivana
Since 1989, Czechia has undergone many changes. Increasingly important part of Czech society is represented by foreign inhabitants, who - most often - move to Prague. The capital city is target of economic migrants but also of those foreigners who seek a new home. The aim of the diploma thesis is to get to know spatial patterns of migration of population in Prague between 1992 and 2011 and to explain geographical causes of migration. The first part of the thesis discusses theoretical approaches dealing with mobility, especially with migration and residential mobility. Next chapter introduces development of migration of population in Prague and summarizes basic findings about the most numerous groups of foreigners living in the capital city. Based on data from registers of migration, general trends in population migration are identified, then, migration activity of Prague inhabitants by citizenship is analyzed. Case study of urbanistic district Nové Butovice-západ in the final part of the thesis verifies, by triangulation of research methods, the reliability of statistical data on numbers and movement of foreigners in Prague and analyzes the influence of immigration of Russian citizens on changing social environment of the studied locality.
