Books Recommender System via Linked Open Data

This thesis focuses on using recommender system's methods on Linked Open Data in a domain of books. After thorough analysis of multiple available Linked Open Data sets, we have concluded that data sets of sufficient size and quality already exist. Together with careful analysis of the structure and quality of the data, recommender system web application has been developed based on retrieved data from a Wikidata endpoint. The application design allows an incorporation of data from multiple sources. A novel approach for generating recommendations utilizing multi language tags extracted from Wikipedia was used. We have shown that it is possible and viable to use recommender systems on top of the Linked Open Data, but the common recommender system's algorithms have to be modified in order to deal with a huge amount of sparsity in the data.

Book of the furriers of Žatec 1474-1814

This master thesis deals with the guild book of furriers from Žatec, which originated from the period between 1474-1816. Its main objective is to create an edition of this book and make it available for further research. This thesis can be divided into two parts: introductory chapters and the actual edition of the book. In the first part are briefly introduced Prague furriers guilds, whose development are linked with guild from Žatec, further outlined is the history of the furrier's guild from Žatec. This chapter is largely based on the edited book and focuses primarily on the guild in the 16th and 17th century. It analyses the organization and most important regulation of the furriers. The next two chapters deal with the book itself. They analyse both the external and internal characteristics. Emphasis is placed on the description of the book and study of its internal structure. Editorial note summarizes the rules under which the edition was created. The second and larger part contains the edition itself. Ludmila Jiřincová and her illustrations of the 19th and 20th century Czech poetry

v anglickém jazyce Abstrakt This thesis describes life and work of Ludmila Jiřincová. She was a czech illustrator, painter, graphic and pedagogue. Thesis includes description of her illustration of czech poetry of the 19th and 20th century, especially illustration of poems written by Karel Hynek Mácha, Karel Jaromír Erben and Jaroslav Seifert. Thesis contains three main parts. The first part describes cultural-historical background of Ludmila Jiřincová's life, which was almost the whole 20th century. The second part of the thesis includes work of Ludmila Jiřincová in the area of czech poetry of 19th and 20th century. There are mentioned illustrations made by Ludmila Jiřincová to poems of Karel Hynek Mácha, Karel Jaromír Erben and Jaroslav Seifert. The third part presents her position in the area of czech art in the second half of the 20th century. There are also described expositions of Ludmila Jiřincová. Self-publishing v českém prostředí a změny na knižním trhu s ním spojené

One of the first Czech research papers on self-publishing. Even though unsuccessful and forbidden authors could publish a book on their own in the past, the current phenomenon of self-publishing can be arranged on-line in just a few clicks and for much cheaper. Self- publishing began to spread since circa 2005 - in the Czech Republic and abroad simultaneously. This thesis shows how the development has unfolded differently in the Czech Republic and in the USA, which is considered the cradle of this technology. The first chapter of this thesis analyzes the history of book publishing and many different ways to publish a book, and defines self-publishing. The second chapter shows how the new technologies and media influenced the expansion of self-publishing. The third chapter analyzes and puts into context some of the Czech and the American self-publishing portals, and compares the providers of these services. Many professionals - editors, authors, and literary critics - criticize self-publishing for its amateurism and low quality content, which this work takes into account as well. This paper also documents some of the rare cases of self-published authors, who managed to succeed despite the tough competition from traditional publishing houses. Books potential as resource of cognitive cultural capital: effects on educational attainment and socioeconomic status

The thesis The potential of books as a source of cognitive cultural capital: the impact on educational attainment and socioeconomic status deals with the socio-cultural phenomenon of reading that is understand as a cognitive skill whether is closely linked to the child's basic needs and habits of operating and learning. The aim of this study is to explore the mechanism of cultural activities (such as a specific type of cultural capital) that is shaped by family and school and forms the individual abilities of human beings. From this perspective it is determinate prerequisite for success in life. The theoretical part describes the life stages of reading with a clearly defined reading's habits and built up the relationship between child and book. Afterwards this part of thesis outlines the concept of cognitive cultural capital and summarizes the importance of external determinants for emergence and development of interest in reading. The empirical part of study uses data from sociological research Distinction and Values 2008 (SOÚ AV ČR, v.v.i.) that presents the structure of reading climate (the availability of books and imitation of parents' reading habits, interaction with parents and fading in childhood). Czech media's influence on the book market in 2012

In the introduction of this study I set out the current state of the Czech book market, how it operates, and the results Czech publishers. I also try to find answers to questions about various ethical and moral dilemmas, both in literature and in-person interviews with experts on the topic. The aim is to determine how significant Czech newspapers influenced the book market in 2012. For this I decided to use the analysis of media content, which is firstly explained and followed by a description and comment on the results. Then I will try to show the influence of the media on the book market using the experiment.

This thesis concerns the Strakonice league, an association of largely Catholic estates of 1449. It tries to conceive the topic in another way, than the older literature did, which did not pay attention to the Strakonice league not specially, but dealed with it mostly in the frame of the description of Bohemian political and military history. The thesis tries to bring new pieces of knowledge of the Strakonice league by means of analyse of correspondence of the lords of Rosenberg (Rožmberk) and of another sources. Concerning the course of the military and diplomatic struggle with the Poděbrady league itself, the emphasis is put on selected, less known aspects. League's attempts to cooperate with the lands adjoining the Czech crown are included, too. The relation of the Strakonice league to foreign countries, where the league was looking for allies, is elaborated in the next section. The last part of the thesis is a prosopographical research of the league members. This section is based on collecting of data about individual persons or towns that entered the Strakonice league. The members' political career, motivation for their entrance into the league, possesion and their relations to each other are studied. Google Book Search : the analysis of the system and its usage in the Czech Republic

The topic of this master's degree diploma thesis is the Google Books service, formerly Google Book Search and Google Print. The wider general context is described briefly in the first two chapters. Google company and its portfolio of services are introduced, as well as the latest progress in sharing of information, for example trends as digital libraries and open access. Third chapter presents results of the analysis of the Google Books as the complex system. Mentioned are: a history of the service, Library Project, Partner Program, metadata harvesting, scanning methods, available searching options, all information and functionalities in the individual records, users' participation. Chapter four is focused on copyright law and disputes related to the Google Books. Fifth chapter deals with the usage of the Google Books in the Czech Republic, in the terms of all local activities. Great attention belongs to digitization in cooperation of Google company with National Library of the Czech Republic. Two questionnaires were done for this thesis, between college students and large Czech publishers. Odeon Publishing House: Current Profile and Media Image

1 Abstract The main goal of this bachelor's thesis is to present Odeon, an important Czech publishing house. The first chapter covers the history of Odeon since its founding in the 1920s by Jan Fromek during a renaissance in the communist era to the problematic privatisation in the 1990s. The first chapter ends in 1999 when Bertelsmann bought Odeon's trademark. The next chapter describes Odeon in its current state. Nowadays Odeon publishes many different book genres; senior editor Jindřich Jůzl chracterises it as literary fiction. I present all four editions of Odeon: Světová knihovna (World's Library), Nobelova cena (Nobel's Prize), Česká řada (Czech Edition) and Knihovna klasiků (Classics Library) including various prominent writers and important books that Odeon holds the rights to. A description of marketing and public relations is also included. A discussion of literary reviews and readers' praise for the books of Odeon makes up most of the third chapter. Reception was usually positive and complimentary of Odeon's quality.
