Huněk, Filip ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee) ; Silverio, Robert (referee)
Bibliographical Reference Hunek, F. (2019). The problems of visual content on social networks: An analysis of user filters implemented on Instagram. Prague, 2019. p. 123. Dissertation thesis (Ph.D.) Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism. Lecturer: Doc. Mgr. et MgA. Filip Lab, Ph.D. Abstract In this dissertation, I am mainly focusing on photographic social network Instagram. It is the photograph that plays a crucial role in shaping the awareness of one's own identity and belonging to a community. Through photographs, on the one hand, we perceive the world and store our individual (Van Dijck, 2005) as well as our collective memory (Pink, 2011). On the other hand, photographs serve as a means of self-expression (Tinkler, 2008). Moreover, today's time is greatly fragmented, discontinuous, and episodic, which, on the other hand, leads human individuals to constantly legitimize themselves as unique and authentic individuals (Bauman, 2002). Furthermore, this constant communication via photographs requires a continual adaptation to the media messages, which puts an increased emphasis on visual communication as a field of social sciences, tightly connected to media studies. In short, the main goal of this dissertation is to introduce an analysis...
The Photo Album and Syntagm in the Web 2.0 Environment
Vlk, Pavel ; Fišerová, Michaela (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
The diploma thesis The Photo Album and Syntagm in the Web 2.0 Environment deals with problems of digital photographic collections shared in the web 2.0 environment. The thesis tries to express the basic principles of online photo albums referring to their characteristics, social function, method of arrangement and classification of individual photos. The aim is to verify the assumption that the photo album in the web 2.0 environment loses its narrative function and becomes a set of photos as modular fragments, whose sequence is made to be easily rearrangeable. The thesis is outlined in an interdisciplinary method, in examining of web photo albums it combines knowledge from studies of new media, sociology, philosophy and semiotics. The diploma thesis verifies validity of new medial theories of Lev Manovich in the environment of web digital photo albums and continues in his analyses of behaviour of users of the Instagram social network. As a part of the thesis there is also the own quantitative research, which with its form approximates to the sociological study of Pierre Bourdieu in 60s of the 20th century, devoted to social use of photography. On the basis of the above mentioned theoretical knowledge and his own research we determine what changes of organization and social function of photo albums...

Císařová, Petra ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Topinková, Martina (referee)
Usage of Instagram app in contemporary photojournalism is a theoretical-empirical research. The aim of this work was to describe the way in which selected Czech photojournalists use Instagram. Whether it is important to them from the point of view of their professional orientation or whether they use it for personal purposes and whether is for them important the feedback they can get through this application. In the first chapter the diploma thesis deals with photography as such, its transition from analog to digital age and the issue of its manipulation. The second and third chapters of this diploma thesis deal with social networks and the application of Instagram. It also deals with how the digitization process has influenced the work of today's photo reporters. The practical part of the thesis is based on two approaches - quantitative content analysis and qualitative interviews with some of the reporters. The research question is: How do some Czech photojournalists present on the Instagram social network? Quantitative content analysis responded to established hypotheses in the research question, which mainly concerned the visual aspects of Instagram accounts. Qualitative interviews gave an insight into the specific strategies that photojournalists access to the application. In the end, the...

Photo Album and its Transformation in Cyberspace
Pešavová, Monika ; Fišerová, Michaela (advisor) ; Černý, Vladimír (referee)
Photo Album and its Transformation in Cyberspace Abstract My thesis deals with the difference in the perception of photo albums in the digital and analog era. Her goal is the reflection of change of a collection of a photographic material from an intimate information to a publicly accessible online self-presentation. This leads to the change in functionality of the photographical media which originally preserved the reality and now creates it. It's the excess of modification of modern photos which leads to the slow intentional return to the past back from the digital to the analog photography. Bc. Monika Pešavová

MMS aneb Sémiotický potenciál obrazové výpovědi
Janda, Filip ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Karľa, Michal (referee)
In the first chapter we will have a look at the transformation and evolution of a photo-camera which on its way to become a medium ofcommunication came a long way from cumbersome glass-plate machinery to the current ubiquitous day-to-day personal digital companion. In the second chapter we will explore the effects of digitisation on the theoretical notion of photography and its position in the present context. Next we will touch on the movement of pragmatism (primarily those versions ofCharles Sanders Peirce and William James) that will allow us to regard our matter as a more holistic interactive problem than dissected pieces of a puzzle; and we will also recapitulate parts of Peirce's theory of signs that are relevant to our cause. The fourth chapter is about the ability of symbolic reasoning - a feature so unique in the world that it is only found in humans and whose principles are very close to the thought-sign system that Peirce devised. In the fifth and last chapter we will see how all that connects to the photographs themselves when they are used in the current digital intention-laden semiotic manner. I
Photography as a special visual resource and itś aplication to art education in kindergarten
Půtová, Martina ; Šmíd, Jan (advisor) ; Hazuková, Helena (referee)
The thesis deals with visual culture and digital photography in art education of pre-school children. The main objective is to uncover children's ability to work with a specific type of picture - photographic picture. The educational project is based on theoretical knowledge of digital media provided in the first part of the thesis and on practical experience gained during several years of practice with pre-school children. The project offers children to use digital photographs as another form of art expression. Talking with children and monitoring their reactions have shown that working with digital photographs is equally beneficial to them as any other art technique.
