From cabarets to concert scene (between 19 and 20 centuries)
Kotalová, Anna ; Kalfiřtová, Eva (advisor) ; Müllerová, Eva (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to describe the history of five cabarets located in Pairs district called Montmartre - Chat Noir, Lapin Agile, Moulin Rouge, Folies-Bergére, Bobino and Olympia. The first plan was to line up cabarets chronologically and be mostly focused on their development changes - Folies-Bergere (1869) - Bobino (1973) - Chat Noir (1881( - Moulin Rouge (1889) - Olympia (1893) - Lapin Agile (1903). On the other hand, during the research, we found out that it would be better to line up cabarets due to different criterions - if they are still running, if they keep their typical cabaret atmosphere or changed to the music-hall, and if they have enriched French culture. Family atmosphere was typical for the first French cabarets. They were places where people could meet each other, drink and eat. During the time cabaret became popular place for the rich public and tourists. The big inspiration for cabarets were modern music-halls from England, however, visitors were still able to drink, eat or just meet their friends there. Typical for the program was chanson which is one of the main functions of cabarets during these days as well. In the district Montmartre, there used to be 5 cabarets - whose we examined in this thesis. On the contrary, nowadays everything is different. Cabaret Chat Noir...
Slang is entertaining – and is becoming an effective means of advertising
Hoffmannová, Jana
This paper demonstrates the current permeation of entertainment and the entertainment function into nearly all communicative spheres (cf. infotainment, politainment, edutainment and others) and its role in the intensive mixing of styles. It documents this primarily through specialized slang, which is becoming an attractive means for institutions to advertise to the broader public and is a combination of the entertainment function and the persuasive one. The examples are selected mainly from the publication Slang pražských dopraváků (The Slang of Prague Transport Employees), which serves to promote the city public transportation, and from the Česko-filharmonický a filharmonicko-český slovník (Czech-Philharmonic and Philharmonic-Czech Dictionary), the purpose of which is to promote classical music concerts. The conclusion then contains a brief consideration of how, in recent years, visualization and multimodality (e.g. interesting artistic collages), along with wordplay and language humor, are utilized in the promotion of concerts (the Prague Spring music festival).

The Relationship of Hedonism and Humanism
Jerman, Ondřej ; Jirsa, Jakub (advisor) ; Švec, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis discusses the relationship between humanism and hedonism. However, its main objective is not to explain the terms in their summarized historical relatedness but to point out their internal coherence. The fundamental issue the thesis deals with is the fact that sentient beings suffer from sorrow. Enumerating the reasons why it is important to search for a solution would be a waste of our reader's time. It is necessary to understand that we don't expect empirical science to solve the problem since - despite the enthusiasm significant for this modern period - has not introduced any relief from sorrow. Here comes the opportunity for philosophy and, eventually, ethics. In its first part the thesis maps out the context of humanism and hedonism, studies their apparent as well as hidden nature, and lays the conceivable foundations of humanistic hedonism. The following section suggests a set of particular steps. Adhering to these instructions makes it possible to experience delight and to eliminate sorrow.
'But it's only a children's book' - children's literature as a vehicle of manipulative ideological dissemination
Moravčíková, Hana ; Clark, Colin Steele (advisor) ; Beran, Zdeněk (referee)
The historical era between 1850 and 1950 is known to be a turbulent period reflected not only in adult literature but also in the texts written for children. This unusually rich period in terms of political, social and ideological development certainly influenced most parts of the world. However, it was particularly important for England mainly for the transition of the Victorian era and Edwardian period to the modern history initiated by the WW I. Throughout this period many new ideologies arose and scientific discoveries were more numerous than ever. In 1859, for instance, Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was published and initiated the still on-going war period between Christianity and science. At the same time, the concept of childhood started to be understood in a different way and books written for children became a common commodity converting the end of 18th century in the Golden Age of children's literature. However, according to Peter Hunt's publication Understanding Children's Literature, 'all texts are inevitably infused by ideologies'. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is firstly, to study the way in which ideologies are incorporated in the texts for children (overt or covert) and secondly, the extent to which the texts for children become a vehicle of...
