Scientific and Institutional Activities of Bohumil Němec at Charles University
Loginov, Ivan ; Hermann, Tomáš (advisor) ; Žárský, Viktor (referee)
Bohumil Němec ranks among the most remarkable figures of Czech science. At the beginning of the 20th century he made a significant contribution to the explanation of plant gravitropism and to the establishment of the Institute for plant physiology at the Faculty of Science at Charles University. Besides that he also studied plant regeneration, fertilization and nuclear division. In my thesis I processed scientific and popular scientific articles by Němec and used secondary sources to analyze his overall activity at the university in historical context. Thesis output is structured overview of Bohumil Němec's activities which can be used for the follow-up research.
Phylogeography of temperate plant species with the focus on Central Europe
Daneck, Hana
Phylogeography of temperate plant species with the focus on Central Europe Hana Daneck Charles University Prague Faculty of Science Department of Botany Supervisor: Prof. RNDr. Karol Marhold, CSc. Consultant: Mgr. Tomáš Fér, Ph.D. Praha 2012 Abstract This thesis presents contribution to clarification of postglacial history of temperate plant taxa in Europe with the focus on especially interesting region of Central Europe, for which diverse roles in postglacial plant histories were suggested. The first part of the thesis summarises general phylogeographical views and methodological approaches with the respect to species history after the last ice age in Europe. Further, the most important aspects of phylogeography of European temperate plant taxa are discussed. The second part contains a set of papers dealing with selected European temperate plant species, for which phylogeographical patterns throughout their present distribution area were inferred, including assumptions on the origin of their contemporary Central European populations and comparisons with another previously studied species.
Suburban park Bažantnice (Kladno) in Botany and Dendrology Instruction
Veverka, Vojtěch ; Novotný, Petr (advisor) ; Hrouda, Lubomír (referee)
The topic of this thesis is forest park's Bažantnice mapping. The thesis suggests the way of aplication of botanic terrain education. Botany and dendrology is one of the main educations question on elementary and secondary school. Park Bažantnice can be used in science lesson for its hight potential. The thesis i s divided into two parts. The first of them summarizes differents types of the terrain education and focuses on didactic using of the park Bažantnice. The second one deals with the station mapping and describes way of data colecting and adapting. Accompanying pictures and generated maps are included in appendiced at the back of the thesis. Thaddaeus Hagecius ab Hayek and His Contribution to the Renaissance in Bohemia
Karlík, Ondřej ; Veverková, Kamila (advisor) ; Lášek, Jan Blahoslav (referee)
The dissertation begins with an introduction about Renaissance, because Thaddaeus Hagecius lived and worked in this age. Renaissance was both an age of faith in hermetic sciences and an age of important scientific discoveries which fundamentally influenced the transformation of cosmology. My intention is to explain the characteristics of this period in the beginning of the dissertation. The next chapter is mainly focused on Hagecius's biography and an overview of his main writings. At first, I dealt with Hagecius's youth and his studies in Bohemia and foreign countries. Afterwards, I mentioned the areas that Hagecius had developed and the writings that he had published about them. I have more thoroughly expanded Hagecius's activity in medicine and astronomy because they were the main areas of his research. In another part of the chapter, I have outlined the friendship between Hagecius and Brahe. I have closed the chapter with an explanation of Hagecius's reference to alchemy. In the third chapter of my dissertation, I have introduced Hagecius's scientific efforts in four areas. These are as follow-astronomy, medicine, botany and brewing, because Hagecius contributed to these four areas with an interesting manner. These areas also show the huge diversity of Hagecius's interests.
