Potential of garden and productive urban space in the today's city
Adamková, Jana
Green areas were an integral part of cities throughout the history. Productive garden, which represents an archetypal symbol of human livelihoods and connection between man and earth, has been disappearing from the urban structure in recent years. Urban agglomerations and their resource uses become the dominant feature of the human presence on the earth, profoundly changing humanity’s relationship to its host planet and its ecosystems. Cities require vast areas of land for their sustenance and have come to depend on large amounts of food being brought in from outside the land area they actually occupy. The article deals with the importance of gardens for humans and highlights the role of productive urban space in process of creating a viable urban environment. As the world urbanises, greater local food self-reliance, using nutrients accumulating in our cities, must be regarded as an important aspect of sustainable urban development. Along with other initiatives and activities, urban agriculture therefore has an important role to contribute to the sustainability of cities in various ways – spatially, socio-economically and environmentally.

The aim of the project is to provide necessary facilities and services for visitors of the Flower Garden in Kroměříž (a UNESCO sight since 1998). The concept of the proposal is based on a partial respect to historic trace of buildings in Holland and Orange Garden and hitherto resulting definitons of the both gardens. The propsed buildings (a visitors' centre and a café) are situated cross-wise to the main axis of the formal part of the Flower Garden and divide the territory determined by a wall into several smaller parts. Consequently, built-up parts alternate with green garden areas. Each cross-wise path in the Garden leads to a certain target and guide visitors to explore new places. The entrance building is preserved in its almost original form with only its functional usage and consequent interior changes being solved. The southern part of the given territory is worked on only as a mass. A new pre-space of the green house is created, a new segmentation of garden areas and a new garden-shop green house with corresponding facilities is proposed which orientation agrees with the overall concept. The surroundings of a rabbit hill and a volary is drawn as a free adaptation of the original form. All garden areas are linked with a water area motif.
