The Image of Ivan the Terrible in Stalin's Russia (Historiography, fiction, drama)

The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze the personality picture of Tsar Ivan the Terrible and his government in Stalin's Russia with regard to the transformation that occurred in spirit of the party ideology. The interpretation of historical facts of Ivan's period in the present work is depicted not only in historiography but also in artistic production, and it aims to express the way professional works, novels, dramas, and films are used for political propaganda. Reflection of the Figure of Judas Iscariot in Uwe Saeger's Novel Die gehäutete Zeit

(in English): The figure of Judas Iscariot is one of the most controversial ones in Christianity and Christian reception. Traditionally Judas used to be synonymous for the ultimate sinner, who would not deserve any compassion at all. He was first and foremost conceived as the traitor of Jesus and was judged and damned accordingly. In every period he attracted attention, was commentated upon and interpreted anew. The paper at hand deals with one of the latest interpretations of Judas: Uwe Saeger's novel Die gehäutete Zeit: Ein Judasbericht (The skinned time: A Judasreport). Published in 2008, this novel is a retelling of the gospel, as seen through Judas' eyes. Uwe Saeger re-interprets the founding story of Christianity and casts a new light on Judas. Saeger disengages himself from a simple black and white perspective on Judas, which was popular for many centuries not only among laymen, but also among theologians. The author does not divide the characteristics into a pure and good Jesus on the one hand, and a bad and dishonest Judas on the other hand, but rather merges the two into one figure, expressed by making up the name Je-Judas-us at one point of his book. Textual Identity in Selected Novels by Philip Roth: Representation, Dissimulation, Creation

The present study seeks to explore the ways in which Jewish identity is discursively deployed in three novels by Jewish-American writer Philip Roth: Portnoy's Complaint (1969), American Pastoral (1997) and The Human Stain (2000). Calling upon a framework of philosophical approaches to identity structured around the key terms of otherness, performativity and ethics, culled from theoretical writings by Judith Butler, Paul Ricoeur and Emmanuel Lévinas, the thesis analyses how writing about Jews in America functions as a political act, initially perhaps against the author's will, and engages the terms of "majority" and "minority." The central topos is that of otherness, viewed as inaccessible and irreducible (Lévinas), but endowed by the characters we will apprehend with powerful fictions, both appealing and repulsive, foci of desire and derision. In relation to our Jewish protagonists, white otherness (Chapter 1), black otherness (Chapter 2) and other Jews (Chapter 3) will be unearthed as crucial sites of imaginative investment which inform the creation of their individual Jewish-American selves. Fictionalizated travel books of m. zikmund and j. hanzelka in years 1950-1959. Period reception

The aim of this thesis is to closely analyze the response to the fictionalized travel books of Miroslav Zikmund and Jiří Hanzelka in the 1950's. The attempt at documenting this response will be made by working with articles and reviews published in period newspapers and magazines, an attempt at analyzing the readers' response through archived correspondence will also be made. Considering the time period in which the works were being published, a brief description of the political situation and social conditions of the time when their travel books were written will be outlined.

Apocalyptic movie - background, forms and function

The bachelor thesis "Apocalyptic movie - background, forms and function" deals the apocalyptic movie phenomenon as a functional element in the occidental civilization since 1920s until now. It investigates the origins of apocalyptic thinking, i.e. expectation of the end- time, and emphasizes its religious, philosophic and practical impact in society based on Judeo- Christian tradition. It tries to adumbrate recent public apprehension, evoked by technology development, spreading of diseases, overpopulation or clash of cultures, and sums up various pessimistic visions in perspectives of human and natural sciences. Then it focuses on the beginning of apocalyptic theme in literary fiction and finally in cinematography. The work brings the original typology of apocalyptic themes, designed on the base of sample of one hundred and fifty best rated movies, and with that tries to confirm reflecting essence of apocalyptic movie, whereas compares distribution of themes and parallel social events or moods in decades. In an effort to clarify function of apocalyptic movie, the work, with help of McLuhan's media theory, uses the concept of moral panic. Handicapped person in the contemporary Czech prose for children and youth

Resume The thesis deals with monitoring image of handicapped person in present Czech literature for children and youth. It involves creation from the 90th of the 20th century. Its aim is focusing on selected representative works of various authors and identifies the way of inclusion the physical, mental and social handicap. Selected works are different, they vary in genre, approach to disability and also in age of target readers. The reasons for this diversity is capture the range of options to solve this task as clearly as possible. The primary aspect is in particular literary and aesthetic, but the thesis also affects the emerging elements of educational, moral and ethical. It is engaged in construction of the main character and other characters, while the deciding recognition of differences is when the main character has handicap and on the other hand when handicap is viewed from a distance. In this diversity is also important the narrative perspective, that with their variations can lead to emphasize the heart of disabled person and his own emotionality, or more likely monitor the interaction of handicapped individual with world and other people. Propaganda fiction of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia period

The thesis deals with Czech activist fiction of anti-Semitic and openly pro-Nazi stance in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia between 1942 and 1945. This type of fiction has yet been widely ignored in the Czech (or Czechoslovak) scientific literature in spite of the fact that it belonged to the so-called "Popular Literature" at that time and therefore could have some (and maybe significant) impact on Czech readership. For that reason one of the main objectives of this paper is to identify and describe particular pieces. The identification and description is based primarily on the original material research of archival documents, newspapers and publications. On the basis of theoretical disputes and reviews in the official Protectorate press it also attempts to define officially demanded fundamental characteristics of the so-called "New Art" (or "The Art of the New Europe"). In another perspective (concerning themes and motives) it aims to distinguish specific categories in the tendentious literature of this period. It is argued that the basic types were: 1) Novels with the strong anti-Semitic accent (emphasis is laid upon a typification of characters); 2) Labour-novels; and 3) "Geopolitical" novels in which the fictional world of the "New Europe" is created.

The thesis aims to map and describe so called ?fictional languages? which we can find in contemporary fiction literature, cinematography and TV shows. The most popularare: Elvish languages Quenya and Sindarin by J. R. R. Tolkien, Klingon language from the TV show Star Trek, Ancient language from fantasy books by Christopher Paolini, Newspeak from George Orwell?s novel 1984, Nadsat language used by teens in Clockwork Orange novel and the new Dothraki language used in the TV show Game of Thrones. The objective of this work is comparing of the most popular fictive languages and an assessment whether and how is it possible to use given languages in communication.
