Satisfaction and stability in a marriage: does it matter if you have met online or offline?

The master thesis looks at marital satisfaction and stability in Czech marriages between 2005 and 2015. The aim of the thesis was to find out whether meeting your spouse online or offline affects marital satisfaction and break-up rate (separation and divorce). The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on attractiveness, the characteristics of a good relationship, the development of marital satisfaction and existing research on online dating. A nationally representative sample of 316 respondents provided answers in an online questionnaire. The results indicate that one in three Czech marriages now begin online. Half of the online group met on an online dating site and 17 % on a social media site. When compared to those that began offline, "online marriages" were slightly less likely to end up in a marital break-up (31 % offline, 26,5 % online) and reported slightly higher marital satisfaction. However, none of these differences were statistically significant. The differences were higher when the online group was narrowed down to the ones who met on an online dating site and on a social media site but remained statistically insignificant. This group also retrospectively reported better fulfilment of their criteria for their life companion at the beginning of a relationship (p=0,041). In general, men...

Online dating applications from the perspective of uses and gratifications theory

Dating online applications have fundamentally changed the form of online dating. They are available on a mobile phone and are based on spatial proximity of users and ease of use. This diploma thesis focuses on users of these applications. This thesis is based on the assumptions of the uses and gratifications theory, which assumes that the media audience is active and uses the media to satisfy its needs. The aim of this thesis is to find out how individuals use the dating applications and what their reasons for using are. To collect data, I chose a combination of quantitative and qualitative approach. First, an on-line questionnaire survey was conducted, followed by semi- structured interviews with applications users. Research has shown that the reason for using and the attitude of users varies with each individual and can change during use. Qualitative study on the use of online dating servers in the Czech republic

This thesis aims to map and describe how users of online dating servers use this medium. How do they self-present on dating sites and how do they create a profile. What is the motivation to use the online dating sites. For data collection, I chose qualitative research. As a qualitative method were used depth interviews with fourteen users of dating site Badoo. The work is divided into two parts. The first part will focus on theoretical concepts. Detail is devoted to the history of online dating, self-presentation, motivation to use online dating sites. Furthermore, the theoretical approaches discussed the relations in terms of evolutionary psychology and, ultimately, stereotypes. The second part is empirical. It deals with methodology, research questions, research strategies and especially the analysis of interviews. Based on interviews with respondents, I have developed several key categories, which are described in more detail the analytical part. This study describes the attitudes/ approach of respondents to categories such as motivation to use dating sites, self-presentation, communication and stereotypes which I have noticed in my research sample. The last part is devoted to a summary of findings and research results.
Online dating

The usage of online dating sides has increased in last few decades. This kind of meeting potential new partner is specific in many ways. Especially in communication, ways of selection and initiation of the relationship online. The reduction of information is another phenomenon in this kind of interaction as a result of creating impression. This contains lying and deception in self-presentation on online dating sides as well. Analysis of data suggests, that men tell lies more than women. They also fell more disclosed on the internet. In addition the users of online dating sides usually tell lies to a person of different gender. The usage of internet appeared as one of the factors that influences the usage of online dating sides for initiation of new relationship as well.
