The Function and Authority of Family Rituals in Vietnam during the 17-19th centuries, Manual of Family Rituals Thọ mai gia lễ

Family ritual manuals were lithurgical texts whose aim was proliferation of Confucian doctrine into the daily life of Vietnamnese population. This thesis describes the environment and circumstances under which the individual manuals originated and developed, and subsequently the nature of the Vietnamese manuals themselves. The following part of the thesis analyses funeral rituals in the most common family rituals manual in Vietnam, Thọ mai gia lễ. The aim is to compare the Vietnamese text with the best known model for manuals devoted to family rituals - the Family Rituals Manual by Neoconfucian philospher Zhu Xiho, and to expose and interpret the identified differences.

Geopolitical impact of China's search for energy on the Indian Ocean and South China Sea

This thesis examines the geopolitical consequences of China's search for energy resources on the Indian Ocean and South China Sea. It provides a brief outline of the energy situation of the world as a whole, specifically how it is becoming a more globalized and singular market. This change is occurring at the same time as a pronounced shift away from the traditional measurements of 'power' towards 'softer' more subtle definitions. There is a brief section outlining the geopolitical teachings of Alfred T. Mahan, specifically how he advocated seapower primarily for the purpose of providing the stability and security necessary for trade. Chinese analysts have been embracing the teachings of Mahan, but also interpreting them in a way that justifies the naval buildup Beijing has been embarking on in recent years. The paper briefly looks at the potential sources that China could turn to meet its energy needs, but concludes that it will have to rely on oil for the foreseeable future. It then attempts to define overall Chinese interests, specifically how nearly all of these relate somehow to energy security, thus underlining the importance of this topic to leaders in Beijing. The integration of 2nd generation Vietnamese children in the Czech society

This thesis focuses on the issue of integration of the second generation of Vietnamese children in Czech society, particularly in primary education. In order to understand the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic it is necessary to become acquainted with the country of origin in the first place. In the theoretical part, the fundamental theoretical concepts related to the topic of Vietnamese history, culture and education are presented. The thesis outlines the differences between the Czech society and the Vietnamese language, traditions and holidays. Furthermore, the history of Czech- Vietnamese relations and knowledge of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic are mentioned. The main part of the thesis is devoted to education and it also includes the model of education in Vietnam, attitudes towards education in both countries and the typical problems of the integration of Vietnamese children in Czech primary schools. These common problems often stem from a variety of situations which could render the Vietnamese integration into the Czech society difficult. The bachelor work is focused on the topic of Vietnam children at the Czech education system. The first part of this work tries to mention cultural-historical background of the Vietnamese coming to the Czech Republic. It is concerning on the differences of the interethnical communication too. Second part of the work deals with the most important problems associated with the education of the Vietnam pupils and students and possibilities of their solution. This part also shows positives of the school as a factor of integration.

Children's word in Vietnam

The topic of this thesis is "Child and childhood in Vietnam". It focuses on the prenatal and the early period of childhood. The thesis uses a cultural anthropological point of view which emphasizes superstitious or taboo behaviour associated with the time of birth - pregnancy, childbirth, puerperium and child care. For the purposes of the thesis, the research was conducted in the north-east urban areas of Northern Vietnam. Since the myths, taboos and rituals tends to change, develop or even perish, it was necessary to limit the topic in terms of time. Therefore the work studies only three generations of Vietnamese women over a sixty-year period. The thesis is based not only on relevant literature but also on the field research conducted in Vietnam. The interviews and unobtrusive observation carried out among involved women extend the information gained from literature and also provide the women's personal point of view on childbirth and early childcare issues. The main objective is to answer how much the so-called "child's world" has changed in the three-generation period and to what extent the rituals, myths and taboos are still relevant to current issues in contemporary Vietnam. Analysis of fertility decline in Vietnam in the context of population policy and in comparison with China

Analysis of fertility decline in Vietnam in the context of population policy and in comparison with China Abstract Vietnam was unified in 1976 after a 20-year war which left the country devastated. Since that time, Vietnam has experienced dynamic population changes. The Government has introduced an interesting population policy with successful programs. From the end of the 80s until the beginning of the 21st century, Vietnam experienced a huge decline in fertility, one of the most significant in the world. Today, total fertility rate fluctuates around replacement level. This thesis analyzes changes in fertility in Vietnam in the context of implementing population policy. Furthermore, it compares fertility decline and population policy influence with the situation in China, where a similar policy has been applied. Self-immolation in Buddhism

The subject of this thesis is self-immolation in Buddhist countries. The author shows examples from both history and the present and interprets them as a ritualised pattern passed on from the fourth century until the present time, the continuity of which was based on literary tradition as well as on historical occurrences. She demonstrates that self-immolations in Vietnam and Tibet also follow the centuries long tradition and prove to have the same components. The author intends to answer the question of the origin of the tradition in Buddhism and its broad popularity compared to other forms of self-sacrifice. Reasons for self-immolations among the Buddhists might have been manyfold: to demonstrate their loyalty to the buddhist doctrine and the Buddha, to use it as means of attaining enlightment immediately or as a form of a political protest. All of the above can be understood as a sacrifice to the Three Jewels of Buddhism, i.e. the Buddha, the Drarma and the Sangha. The author also handles self-immolation in Buddhism as a question of ethics in order to present the problem in its completeness. In doing so, she concentrates on the point of view of the followers of Buddhism themselves. Czech labour market for foreigners and the situation of Vietnamese employees

Most of the European countries are now facing the common challenge from aging population. This affects the labour market and consecutively the economic engine. As a matter of course the Czech Republic has to welcome workers from outside sources to supplement its labour shortage. I've found that the majority of the migrant workers going to the Czech Republic are low skill ones and they concentrate in the lower tier of the labour market. The efforts of the Government to attract high skill workers have not been much successful in bringing more qualified foreigners to the country. The Vietnamese is the third largest migrant community in the Czech Republic with 60.301 registered people. For those who came here in the 70s and 80s, they have been legally and pretty successfully residing in the society. But for the new workers who were sent to work in Czech factories since 2006, the global crisis turned their lives into hardship. They lost jobs but they couldn't or didn't want to go home. They must hold on in this land with a hope to change their lives.

South China Sea conflict - case of Spratly and Paracel islands

The bachelor thesis "Spratly and Paracel Islands Dispute in the South China Sea" explores the conflict between Brunei, China, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam. The main task of the bachelor thesis is to present each party of the conflict, nature of their claims on the Spratly and Paracel Islands and the development of relations between them. The attention is given to the United States of America, Japan and ASEAN too. They do not have any claim on the islands but they influence the situation in the region. To better understanding legal and theoretical aspects of the conflict are explained. It involves theory of the conflict and security, United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and Declaration on the South China Sea. The conflict itself is described since the end of the Second World War to the present, the stress is put on the present situation and causes of the tension in the region.

The Cult of the Mother Goddesses (Dao Mau) in Vietnam (with a focus on South Vietnam)

This MA thesis deals with the topic of the cult of Mother Goddesses in Vietnam with special reference to South Vietnam. The subject is discussed from the point of view of cultural anthropology and special attention is paid to some specific aspects, which differentiate this popular belief from other religions. The cult of Mother Goddesses is characterised in greater detail on the basis of certain hypotheses and is viewed through the prism of various ethnologically oriented paradigms. The first part of the work describes the development of this cult, its Vietnamese specifics and its position in the context of the local religious milieu. Furthermore, the work discusses the characters of the individual Mother Goddesses and the collected theoretical knowledge is compared with the results of empirical research. On the background of the example of Mother Goddess Bà Chúa Xứ, the work elucidates certain topics, which are related to the cult of Mother Goddesses, but are considerably differentiated regionally. It is therefore necessary to present these aspects by way of concrete examples and to see them in the cultural-historical context.
